Claiming they are doing it as an expression of their love for you is what sounds bonkers to me.
There are lots of warm places that aren't on somebody's lap, and in fact many cats avoid lap sitting until they develop a bond with you. My own cat also likes to hang out with me more often than not, and by "with" I mean at the far edge of the bed or in a catbed across from the couch, just because we're there. He's obviously not getting fed or petted just by hanging around the vicinity, he simply likes the companionship of having people nearby. Cats don't know what "love" is and don't experience emotions like humans do but they certainly seek companionship and build bonds with particular humans.
