Here is one for everyone.

Have you ever eaten something that is Banana flavoured and thought to yourself "this doesn't taste like Banana"!

Actually it does taste like Banana but a different type of Banana from the ones we eat.

I'll explain, Up until the mid 1950's the main type of cultivar of Banana exported around the world was a variety called the Gros Michel (Big Mike) but in the 1950's it was almost virtually wiped out by a fungal disease called Panama disease.

So in the 1960's Banana plantations changed to growing the Cavendish Banana which is what we eat today.

Both types of Bananas have a different flavour and texture to one another.

So even though we have been eating the Cavendish Banana for decades food companies have never changed to changing their Banana flavour to mimic the Cavendish and it is still based on the Gros Michel.

So basically we are eating Banana flavour just a different type of Banana.
