When it comes to Robert E Lee, he actually was a positive force in reconciliation with the North. He surrendered to end further violence, spoke out against a continued insurgency against the North, encouraged Southern representatives to listen to Northern representatives, and went on to run a university. So I could definitely see why we would have some monuments of him in post-Civil War. He basically became a symbol of reconciliation and reconstruction.
He also was an absolute genius when it came to war.
I recall having to do a book report years ago in a US History college course, so I chose him. I don't recall the specifics, but I believe he was 1 of the few reasons that the South even came close to defeating the North during the Civil War, due to his ability w/ using various strategies to win many battles, despite often-times being outnumbered badly.
