China is not really socialist, at least not worker-ownership socialism, but they are a 'planned market economy' where the government directs economic development primarily. The government claims to be building up the country's productive forces in order to eventually reach socialism. This claim is dubious, however it's true that the country's poor have in the last ten years or so started to feel the real benefits of China's wealth as a nation. For my money, China's system is a much better option than the western model which has totally run out of steam, and I think China will continue to grow in power and wealth, with some of that going back to the citizens (which again, is better than the West frankly where 99% of what little economic growth there is goes into the pocket of the bourgeoisie)
