Sounds like he may be a new family member soon. Almost the same thing happened to me. I was leaving work and a stray ran under my truck. When he finally came out he was talking, purring and showing his belly. I work next to an interstate and his chances were not good with that and below freezing winter. I took him home and to the vet, we never located the owner (I think he got lost or abandoned, he was starved, ribs showing). 5 years later he rules the house. You did a good thing and I hope everything works out!
