I like the fact that the armed forces answer to the monarch and not the current government of the day, because ironically, it seems like a good safeguard against tyranny by the government or one political party.
Also, even though it is now largely a symbolic position which rarely exercises its power, it's still good to have such a symbolic embodiment of the nation which is above party politics and which in theory, could put its foot down and stop any government from doing something which could harm the nation.
