I think it mostly has to do with the mechanical parts inside printers. For some reason most still can't communicate properly with USB ports. Range of things that could be causing it. Drivers. Ports. etc. Brand printer?
I've also had that happen when i was at univeristy i had to print reports essays etc my printer was crap. I used mostly the univeristy printers when i had to print out stuff. I think they had them all connected through a network and were pretty fast.
