I subbed for a while! I drink a lot of water and usually went to the bathroom a lot. Depending on where you are, you can just ask a nearby teacher every time to watch your class. Alternate, and try not to make it a problem. Most teachers are thankful there's a sub in the first place (if you're good) so they'll maybe be nice if you ask occasionally. But yeah, try to go between classes.

Unrelated - I know most people hate certain age groups, but from what I picked up working as a sub in a bunch of schools:

  • Elementary schoolers don't have attention spans, even less than before. Covid made these kids take their most important formative years of school on a screen with (probably) bad parenting. You need to come in expecting bad social skills and worse attention spans. If your teacher has a no-snack or no-tablet time, enforce it. They will turn into monsters if you give them their fix when they are normally not allowed to do it. They're still bebbies though, so I needed to remind myself constantly that the new behavior problems aren't their fault. It might be different now since the newest group of kids probably went to physical school. Overall, they're not bad kids and will usually try to listen to you the best they can.
  • Middle schoolers get a bad reputation, but I actually liked subbing at their schools most. They are hormonal and will try to push your buttons, but most of them are still young enough to be afraid of authority if you don't immediately show weakness. If you're a guy, it should be easy to not get bullied by them immediately. I've heard it's much harder for female substitutes. I was able to still scare them with a stern presence - there's always the really bad kids who will ignore that, but that's any grade. Middle school teachers will sometimes still have the "word" or "phrase" they use to quiet the class when things get really bad - if they give that to you, it means that they've made that word carry a lot of power. Use it responsibly.
  • High school kids know you can't touch them, and are most likely to mess with you off the bat. I always got to know the heavy hitters like athletes and the class talkers, who helped control the class. This was especially useful during multiple-day assignments or if I went to the school often with chances to see them in other classes. They're gonna use their phones, and I tried not to push against it unless it was test day or something. It's a hot take, but causing tension would mean they make subbing harder in other classes. Honestly though, 8/10 high school kids are mature enough to know you're a sub and not out to get them. They'll probably give you a morsel of respect right off the bat (in a good way), and you need to use it to be likeable but also not a stuffed animal. Overall a good age group to sub for imo.
