A lot of anime fans are contrarians who lack social grace and view anime as a form of enlightened, superior taste that they use as a cope for their lack of integration with society. The reality is that the initial wave America's exposure to anime was offputting due to the fans which were mall arcade, social laggards who "NYYYAAAAHH"'d the normal people from considering it as a legit genre to consider in the late 90s/early 2000s.
