Because it's PR.

At the end of the day, if it's clear United suffers more from being stubborn, then United is going to apologize. They're going to settle because lose a lot more money if they don't, and they're going to keep overbooking passengers. Make no mistake, the CEO still thinks he did nothing wrong, but saying they did nothing wrong makes United look worse.

Doctor gets paid a lot of money for his trouble, likely in a settlement, United stocks tumble, some employees take the fall and get fired even though they have nothing to do with it, everything proceeds as usual.

That's pretty much what's going to happen.


regardless of what the ceo says, he is going to get fired because the buck stops with him. the board of directors and shareholders will demand he gets fired because the stock is plummeting.
