Also I know you are on SSI and dont have much money to buy stuff upfront but for those others that do and live in a good farming area buying from a farmer and having it processed is the way to go. High quality beef that will average out to about $5 a pound in this market BUT that is the total average. Considering you get a bunch of steaks, roasts, and other stuff in addition to hamburger it makes a damn good value.
And you can get 1/4 beef, half, whole cow, whatever suits your or your family needs. Its so much better than being at the mercy of a grocery store. If you have a dedicated deep freeze for stuff like this it is the way to go. While others are paying $20+ a pound for Ribeye or Filet Mignon you can be paying like $5. Id encourage you all to look into it.
Its a way of life in my state. Every small town has a meatlocker (butcher) that will process cows, deer, pigs, lambs, all that. You can get custom bundles to your liking, custom fat content ratio with hamburger, all of that. Its a great way to do it and knowing the source of your food is good too. What youre getting from the farmer down the road is more trustworthy to me. So again if you have the freezer space and can afford the upfront bulk purchase cost it is so much better and cheaper.
This guy knows exactly what he is talking about.
We do the same thing except it's a quarter of a bison. The steaks aren't as tender but they are much better than no steak.
