absurd that Im still seeing shit like this in 2023

The job is actually a perfect fit to my resume but requiring in-office work 5 days a week. at what would be a 45+ minute commute for most of their candidates (its in a small town, population ~1000, in bumfuck wisconsin) for a freaking app developer is a huge deal breaker

guess thats why its been two months and they still keep bugging me about it

Usually it is the opposite. It is someone who lives 40 miles outside the city and doesn't want to commute INTO the city.

I live in a small town of 1,000 people in bumfuck Iowa. I would be thrilled to find a job in my town that was as good as what I have. But thankfully for me a good size city is only 6 miles away.

That's not even close to the crazy stuff I get from recruiters.

"Hey I see you are some senior IT infrastructure person with 15 years of experience on the East coast. You'd be a perfect fit for this 6 month tier 1 helpdesk support job in Seattle for 16 an hour. Interested?"

Oh I definitely get this shit too. I chalk that up to desperate recruiters blasting everyone

my issue with this one is with the expectations of the employer, especially considering the city theyre expecting people to commute from has an abundance of tech jobs paying the same rate

there is no good reason a software developer needs to be in-office 100% of the time

Because if you don't go into the office middle management can't justify its paycheck.

Sure but the job market here is still on the side of the employees

like I have a great job, am paid well with great benefits, and my boss has been trying for months to find someone to add to my team

employers need to adjust their expectations accordingly

Yeah, or the weird opposite stuff. Like oh you've been a server admin/engineer for a decade, do you want to be a senior oracle java architect? Lol

Lol. Thats a ghastly commute if youre planning on working there for more than ~3 months.

If it does become long term, youd essentially be forced to move.

Especially when theres an abundance of similar jobs within city limits, that offer remote/hybrid options

In Wisconsin I imagine that commute being miserable in the winter.

My aunt has an hour-long commute to her job at the DMV.

She still says it's a better job than working as a long-haul truck employee since she would often complain about men and her boss mistreating her.

Yeah, I often get things that are essentially, Would you like to take a 60% pay cut to work in a much tougher school in a less senior position. Oh and by the way its in Qatar, where the cost of living is significantly higher than where you currently are and you wont get any of the awesome perks that are in your existing package. Can I put your name forward?

Yes, also my estimate of 45 minutes is the time it takes with no traffic at all

would easily be an hour+ during rush hour, plus more with snow

thats 10+ hours of my week
