Previously on Survivor...

Aw, whatever. I watched last night's and hardly care now.

And no, I don't hate Heidi.

I think Heidi is pretty boring for most of the game, up until the final 11. If you look at her as a storyline of someone who wants to make big moves, and they constantly either wind up failing, or just doing nothing to benefit her as she intends, then she doesn't have a terrible edit.

I think Carolyn could have done better in front of the Jury. I wanted to see her talk about the early game and the sanctuary with Danny and Brandon

Well earned win by Yam Yam though!

Really disappointing result but I think it says more about the edit than the jury themselves.

I think what I said tracks with the jury:
I do think Yam Yam could win since he's super convincing socially, especially in the recent episodes where they've shown him talking 1:1. Carolyn is more generally likably but not 1:1 likable.

Yam Yam had DAYS of brilliant jury management that was just too boring for TV. But probably all of Carolyn's big moves were put in. So it looks even in the edit but in reality Yam Yam was ridiculously strong.

Carolyn was undeniably smarter and bolder in the game though. I wished she got some votes for that alone, esp from Carson. But as much as everyone is a gamebot, it seems like socials do rule this game as much as ever.

yeah i think there's a difference between, like, "oh, i can see now that this person is worthy of respect and has many admirable qualities" and "i personally get along with this person well" and i think people were being genuine when they praised carolyn in the former way but i guess its still not equal to the latter

It's important to note that, even though Carolyn got a very strong edit that pushed her as a contender...Yam Yam still ended the season with 80 confessionals and is like, the 6th-highest confessional count EVER. So we definitely got to see his game in full and understand why he could get votes come the endgame.

Off the top of my head, four of those ahead of him are Russell in Samoa, Rob in Amazon, Tai in Kaoh Rong, and Richard in Borneo

For a while now. It used to be that we'd see scenes of strategizing and we might get confessionals to explain what we just saw, but somewhere along the line, producers just started putting in confessionals to justify their winners. We saw it with Gabler, how production would regularly give him confessionals to justify his under-the-radar strategy in 43, Fabio was constantly given "I'm gonna play dumb" confessionals in Nicaragua. That sorta thing.

Also, I was wrong. Yam Yam had 83 confessionals and is NINTH overall, not sixth. He is, however, the second-highest confessional count in the back half of Survivor's history at this point, and third-highest since Heroes vs. Villains.

  1. Russell Hantz (Samoa) - 108
  2. Rob Cesternino (Amazon) - 101
  3. Colby Donaldson (Australia) - 98
  4. Tony Vlachos (Cagayan) - 97
  5. Rob Mariano (Redemption Island) - 97
  6. Richard Hatch (Borneo) - 92
  7. Kelly Wiglesworth (Borneo) - 85
  8. Lex van den Berghe (Africa) - 84
  9. Yamil "Yam Yam" Arocho (44) - 83
  10. Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien (Marquesas) - 82

Oh wow, I thought Tai had some ungodly number of confessionals in 32. I remember someone saying that that season had the most overall confessionals since Borneo, and knew he had the most in that season, so maybe that's why.

Tai had 74, which is still high, but only those ten I listed hit 80 or more.

Tai had 74, Aubry had 70, Michele had 57, and those are already extremely high numbers for the final three alone.

Michele had 57
This is quite surprising to me, since I always felt like she seemed under-edited, especially for a winner. Maybe that harkens back to what I said about the overall number of confessionals being skewed quite high in that season. 57 there probably seemed like 40-ish in most seasons of the time.

I'm pretty sure the rules are as follows:
-Their chyron has to be shown for it to count as a confessional
-If less than 10 seconds of footage is shown in between, it counts as the same confessional when it resumes. If 10 seconds of footage or more are shown, it's considered a new confessional when it resumes.

Length of the confessional doesn't matter AFAIK

I'd think so. Shambo called Russell after filming ended to tell him that he'd lost even though she'd voted for him. Russell thought she was pulling his leg. Whoops.

Juries talk about that stuff all the time and there's no real way for production to prevent it.

Just moving this into the new topic for reference.

The cream of the crop:
1. Kaoh Rong
2. Vanuatu
3. Pearl Islands
4. San Juan Del Sur
5. China
6. Philippines

Very good seasons with a few minor flaws:
7. Marquesas
8. Borneo
9. Heroes vs. Villains
10. Nicaragua
11. Guatemala
12. Gabon
13. Survivor 42

Largely solid seasons, but with some major flaws that prevent them from being better:
14. David vs. Goliath
15. Cagayan
16. Exile Island
17. Fiji
18. Amazon
19. Survivor 44
20. Survivor 41
21. Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers
22. Micronesia
23. Palau

Has some distinctly negative aspects, but has enough fun and enjoyable content to not hate outright:
24. Game Changers
25. Winners at War
26. Blood vs. Water
27. Edge of Extinction
28. Samoa
29. South Pacific

Mostly bland and forgettable:
30. Tocantins
31. Africa
32. One World
33. Australia
34. Ghost Island
35. Survivor 43

Extremely, extremely negative and unpleasant, but at least KINDA interesting in that negativity:
36. Thailand
37. Worlds Apart
38. Island of the Idols

Aggressively boring and soulless, and revolving around a twist that honestly makes the season worse through its existence:
39. Millennials vs. Gen X
40. Cook Islands
41. Caramoan
42. Cambodia
43. All-Stars
44. Redemption Island

I looked it up before posting my "?" comment and all I saw was that it was rumored to be entirely in South America, with BB legend Taylor Hale as a contestant. Nothing about a missed flight. I would think that's a COVID thing above all else, since the season filmed last year.

0% chance that they're stuck somewhere because of a missed flight. They have their own plane now, remember. They're probably doing an all South America season because of COVID and the fact that the last two seasons were all Europe except for two legs in Jordan.

Yeah maybe i'm misremembering or mixing up my rumours. I found where I think I originally read the whole season in South America rumor and it was posted 7 months ago so if it's still circulating without being refuted...

That being said, I hadn't thought about the "whole seasons in Europe" (other than brief Jordan visit) like Mewtwo said above, but at least you could chalk that up to COVID times. If this is true, considering we're out of the pandemic era, it reads as a pure cost-saving measure, which really doens't bode well for the future of the show either.

While it certainly isn't cause for optimism, I certainly don't think it's an automatic season-killer. TAR8's problems went WAY beyond just that, so if there's still a good cast with lots of drama and decent challenges, it still has potential to be a good season.

TAR8's problems went WAY beyond just that
Yeah, TAR8's problems included:
-Kids
-The bloated cast, where it was impossible to keep track of 40 people's names
-Staying on North America due to the above
-The ridiculous NEL penalty of giving up your money AND backpacks

In short, Amazing Race works best when it's a dating couple arguing in the backseat of a cab because their driver who doesn't speak English got them lost, not when an 8 y/o is asking their parents "Are we there yet?" in "exotic" Pennsylvania.

This won't be worse than TAR8 solely because there aren't any kids, there's a manageable cast size, and no NELs. However, TAR8 definitely set TAR down the wrong track for other reasons. Since then, the show has been more about completing menial tasks instead of actually immersing people in the cultures of the place they're visiting. It's not as "amazing" as it was back in the first 7 seasons, where sometimes they'd have to spend a night in a hotel in the middle of town mid-leg and get to see the nightlife of where they were. Or experience the local kids having fun despite being poor.

Which leads me to the point of this post: Why did TAR go away from what made it so compelling in the first place? Is there any way to restore that part of it?

Caught up on Tough As Nails. The first half of the season was really strong (and episode 5 was the best of the season), but it's become kinda dull since then. Like, Savage Crew was fun when there was constant drama and spite, but now they're actually trying to work together and be competent, and it saps the fun of the team competition.

Additionally, in terms of the cast...the guys are not bringing it at ALL this season. Dustin is such a pointless contestant from a drama perspective. Todd is boring, Kenji is just inspirational sob story after inspirational sob story. Paul was a bit of a dick, but not so much so that he's an interesting villain to root again. Marcus is generically nice, but we never really get to know him beyond him being nice. And then Ben is such an obvious frontrunner that he makes the season super boring.

Also, Yesi is far and away the most forgettable character this season.

Another season of Tough as Nails in the books.

I'd say TAN5...it's tough to rank, because I think the first half of the season is really strong, what with Savage Crew being a complete trainwreck...but then they kinda got their shit together while still losing all the time, and it was neither fun nor interesting anymore.

Spoilers for last Friday's Episode and Tonight's Finale:

It honestly would have been funnier to have Savage Crew lose AGAIN in the head-to-head competition, but instead they got a meaningless win to finish the season down only 5-4 instead of 6-3. But then we get Dustin absolutely decimated in the individual competition while Ben wins ANOTHER prize, and Dustin gets utterly smoked by Todd, putting Jessica as the last Savage Crew standing going into the finale.

Then the finale itself has Ben avoid overtime AGAIN, while Jessica loses to Kenji, so the final is just the three guys from Dirty Hands, really making the season feel dull in retrospect. Like...Dirty Hands had the three best players of the season...no wonder they were so dominant. But unlike season 3, which had a similar outcome, you still had underdog Lia make the end to make the ending feel exciting. This time, even though the final was close in practice, Ben still never really lost the lead once he brute forced his way through the opening challenge. And that's the season...Ben was the front runner from the moment he won the very first competition, and at no point was he ever in danger...it's a dull, anti-climactic ending to a season that had so much promise. Oh, and having Kenji's entire contribution to the final being him failing to finish the second task of the gauntlet was not fun either.

BB25 cast list is up, and there are not one, but TWO Survivor connections - Cirie's son and Zach's brother.

They definitely picked one threatening and one benign association. I bet it comes out about Zachs brother and then Ciries son exposes himself and they align secretly. Huge advantage to both potentially

Jared Fields was gonna be on David vs. Goliath but was replaced by Davie after he had a panic attack. He'll either overplay because he's been preparing for years or realize he has to take it slower on a marathon like BB. Zach's brother has no reason to hide "Yeah, my brother was on Survivor for an episode. Nobody really remembers him, they just remember that the winner had a crush on him." Jared....... yeah, he can't let out that his mother is Survivor royalty, except to Zach's brother.

That said, I don't really care about BB anymore. I have other things to prioritize in my life than a show that airs three times a week and has live feeds and would take up too much of my life for how little I actually enjoyed it. I kept being disappointed season after season and just gave up after BB23. That was the fifth straight season of disappointment of varying degrees (BB20 being the least disappointing) and I'd just had enough.

Hopefully Jared wins to complete the trifecta (unless you want to count Luke from Australian Survivor winning that Australian Celebrity Big Brother season).
