I heard that companys purposely update your phone with software that makes it perform worse.

I've never been one to buy new phones though. Still rocking early gen phone.

There's got to be firmware you can install without bloatware

I owned two cellphones pre-smartphone. I've maybe had...5 smartphones? Maybe fewer. I've never gotten to the 'oh no, it's too slow' point - it's usually just breaking them for me. I've gotten by on some loaners from friends for short periods. Definitely need mine for work at present. I stick in the $100-200 price range, not the boutique range. I admit it is impressive what kind of photos you can take with a Google Pixel 6 or 7 though.

idk some of the 'planned slowdown' is myth, some isn't. I feel like Apple was the culprit? I've never used Apple products besides the old iPod Classic. Most tech slows down after a few years anyhow, so it isn't really that surprising.

No. Not updating your phone is a serious security risk, so there's no real alternative.

Just don't buy an iPhone and you will be fine. Android doesn't do that, they just stop updating your phone after a while.

The issue is specifically the batteries. iOS throttles phones that it believes have degraded batteries so that the phone doesn't randomly crash, which could otherwise happen if the battery can no longer properly support the needs of the phone. To that extent nearly all modern smartphones are built with planned obsolescence with the push away from user replaceable batteries. You technically can still replace the battery if you know what you're doing or use a repair shop, but modern phones are designed to be a pain in the ass to replace the battery, as they would rather you just buy a new phone.
