Maybe The Jungle Book, though that's a close call. Haven't seen the Pete's Dragon remake, though I didn't like the original very much so I'd probably like that better.

The Jungle Book pretty easily.

I did like Beauty and the Beast, but still preferred the cartoon.

The rest I didn't really like.

I still haven't seen a lot of them but of the ones I have seen I didn't like any better than the original and I wish they would stop.

I guess the one I've heard most people say is on par with or better than the original is Maleficent.

although Disney's never really been a big part of my childhood outside Fantasia so I don't really hold any nostalgia for the originals

I wouldn't say I liked any of them more than the original, but I wouldn't say I liked them less either. About even

I would say The Jungle Book 2016 is the closest in quality to the original film, but even then I like it about even and can't honestly say I prefer it to the animated version. At the time of its release I thought it was an improvement, but now that the hype has worn down and I have time to reflect on it I kind of resent it for opening the can of worms that is Disney's latest "live action remake" bender. And yes I know Alice came first, but I don't consider it so successful that it launched the trend. I would rank them as such:

Take my Money Tier

The Jungle Book (2016)
Maleficent
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Aladdin (2019)
Christopher Robin

Save my Money Tier

Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Alice: Through the Looking Glass
Dumbo (2019)

Disney, You'll Never get my Money Again Tier

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
The Lion King (2019)

Fuck Giving Disney any more Money Tier

Cinderella (2015)
Pete's Dragon (2016)
Lady and the Tramp (2019)
Mulan (2020)
Cruella
Pinocchio (2022)

First tier is films I don't regret seeing, most of which I paid money for (and no I don't sneak into movie theaters anymore I actually work at one and we get to see movies for free after new release restriction is lifted) and don't have remorse for having spent any of it.

Second tier is films I enjoyed at the time, most of which I paid money for that looking back on it I wish I had just saved instead.

Third tier is films that didn't need to be made and/or I hated, all of which I paid money for and instantly regretted, vowing to myself to never again let Disney butcher my childhood for a fee.

And the final tier is all the films I didn't see because I didn't care to or because they were released as Disney+ exclusive and fuck giving them money. True to my word I haven't given Disney the time of day since 2019 and will continue not to do so.

Having wrote all that out only Alice in Wonderland 2010 stands a real shot at me preferring it to the original because... well I do not care at all for Alice in Wonderland 1951.

I do actually prefer Maleficent to Sleeping Beauty and Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh as well, but those are closer to retellings which are different than remakes. Everything else other than The Jungle Book 2016 just pales in comparison to what came before it. From what I've heard of the D+ releases it all just seems like more soullsss cash grabs so I'll probably never see them.

Oh right, Petes Dragon. That is very well regarded and almost universally thought of as better, if you count it.

Also Maleficent may be the worst of all of them. With that said the source material is not very good either.

Maleficent was complete character assassination. The original Sleeping Beauty is one of the most gorgeous animated films ever, which alone makes it far better to watch.

Yeah, I would agree with this. The reason it's the only remake worth a damn since they started pumping one out every year is because it's the only one to take the existing story and do something different with it.

I'd also say that the 101 Dalmatians live-action version was better because Glenn Close was flawless as Cruella. Just like Angelina Jolie was perfect as Maleficent... in the first movie, anyway.

My earlier "n" was in reference to the literal frame-for-frame remakes, not the ones that don't feel like remakes and instead feel like different adaptations of the same source material (the Johnny Depp Alice in Wonderland among them). I also didn't know that a Pete's Dragon remake existed though I haven't seen the original.

No it wasn't. That movie made Maleficent into a complex anti-hero, and didn't change much stock in Aurora, who's a low-tier Disney Princess already. The sequel to Maleficent was terrible, and that completely neutered pretty much every existing character because most of them looked so bored. Michelle Pfeiffer was the only one having fun and she's all that made it watchable. I enjoyed her performance but hated literally everything else.

Yeah, I enjoyed Christopher Robin and Cruella, but neither of those were remakes. I get pretty sick of sequels and prequels too, but those two stood above the rest.

I thought Jungle Book was the worst by far but I can kinda see why it's getting positive reactions. It at least tried to be something different. For me it utterly failed to be good but yeah, different sure.

Maleficient I don't really agree is a remake but would be the only one I'd say it improved with
