A fun wuxia type movie that's entertaining with likable characters? Reading some old topics that were hyped for Iron Fist and it hurt remembering that kinda disappointment.

I actually liked Iron Fist. That first season was a train wreck but the messy writing and characters changing alliances in every episode made it unpredictable and kept me interested. Plus the show introduced me to Anderson Paak lol. The biggest problem was obviously the bad choreography. Shang Chi shouldnt have that problem

Man Jessica Henwick was fire. She really helped to elevate Iron Fist somewhat.

Iron Fist's season 3 teaser was what the show should have been from the start: You had jessica henwick transforming the iron fist into an... Iron Sword, and you had Danny dual-wielding Iron Pistols/bullets. It was everything the show should have been and what I wanted out of a homage to 70s era kung fu films (just like how Luke Cage was supposed to be a homage to blaxploitation era films)

I'm not mad at all. I'm just saying that I think this film will fail in the pandering department with the group they want, but mostly everyone will still like it enough. I don't think you can come anywhere close to what Black Panther did.

I plan to watch it, but my hype with the MCU is at an all time low so oh well

I've never seen Iron Fist, but i know they're trying to repent for the past sins with the Mandarin from Iron Man 2 days and Abomination from The Incredible Hulk days. Feels like it's the ultimate apology from those two.

Black Panther was on a whole nother level and this seems to be aiming for that level. I'm not sure what other film you feel came anywhere close to attempting to do what BP did.

I'm talking specifically of China. I don't think the Chinese will be too terribly impressed with this film. There is also no universal Asian identity like there is for those of African ancestry. A lot of Asian countries don't like each other.

I'm not sure exactly what you were trying to say, but it kind of sounds like you just think I was being alt right and complaining about pandering. I'm not complaining about it. I'm well aware that it is what it is.

I'm just saying that I highly doubt this film will pander to the group in question nearly as well as Marvel would hope.

I don't really have strong feelings about this film either way, but I do intend to see it. My hype for this film is only low in the sense that my hype for the entirety of the MCU is low. I mostly didn't enjoy the Disney+ shows except for a lot of Wandavision. Didn't enjoy Endgame as much as I thought I would and I hated Captain Marvel. Stuff like that happens and I'm just not as excited for future entries.

They didn't specifically ask for Shang Chi but they've asked for "a leading Asian role"

There was actually a lot of controversy during Iron Man 3 because of how the mandarin was handled for reasons besides the script fucking sucked.

I'm fine with this movie just like I'm fine with everything else the MCU is doing. I just don't see this movie coming anywhere close to the success that BP had. People of Asian descent and those of African descent are very different.

Iron Fist wasn't low budget though. That's why it was so embarrassing. It's not like black panthers where the effects were bad because they didn't have time, Iron Fist was bad because of people involved.

I thought Abomination was fine in an otherwise generic movie and the weakest of the MCU. Glad he got brought back, there's potential there still

...but man, if Shang Chi beats up abomination when it took a lot out of the Hulk to do it, I don't know if I can handle that kind of power level boost

Abomination has been confirmed for the She-Hulk series, so maybe it's just Shang Chi breaking him out of the cryo prison?

Eh it's more like Disney in general has this motive to appear woke so a lot of their movie choices seem more artificial. Black Panther was a great movie though. They can be pandery and good at the same time.

I'd argue that film representation does have some value, but film studios really try to oversell this to make themselves look progressive.

Many people have a very hard time understanding criticism of "woke" ideology as being different from a progressive ideology. Woke generally refers to a much more performative (dare I say virtue signal) set of actions while progressive is more matter of fact.

Frankly, I don't care what the leads of a film look like, but Feige has made it very clear that the MCU will be making very strong pushes for diversity going forward. If these films are like Black Panther then great. If they're like Captain Marvel and Falcon and the Winter Soldier (by far the most I've ever been disappointed in an MCU film/series) then I won't be too excited.

In a greater sense, I'm getting really sick of the Marvel formula and Marvel humor. It looks like they're trying to make their movies more diverse, but not trying to fix any of these issues.

The Suicide Squad is a great example of doing something different with the super hero genre. MCU stuff tends to feel the same even when it is different. The MCU also seems to rely on a lot of callbacks to obscure side characters showing up.

Like I would probably never accuse a DCEU film of pandering if they had a film full of non white leads, because they've never given any indication that they care about performative politics so I'd assume it was 100% because they believe in what the film is.

It comes off as forced diversity but in reality up until a few years ago, the former higher ups wouldn't green light anything that didn't star a white dude. They wouldn't even let a girl be ghr main villain which they re-wrote in iron man3. Now they can finally make those things and probably happening all at once and people are crying about it
