they are, and that makes you feel more intimidated by them when you play them because you're like "oh boy, this game is going to be hard", so you sort of psych yourself out and that makes the game hard?

They're hard when you're starting out because the combat system is slow and deliberate and that's not what we're conditioned to expect from games
Once you get used to it though, they're significantly easier

The first one was hard because it was my first Souls game. They require a certain methodical style of play, but once you learn it it's not very difficult

I find stuff like Terraria and Hollow Knight way harder

Bloodborne on the other hand, it rewards a more in your face, keep attacking to get your HP back style of play so that one is a different story

They're just punishing so they're tough the first time through. It's like old Castlevania. Once you beat it, it's much easier to go through again

I'd say they're objectively difficult to the casual audience. That people can spend time either breaking the game, manipulating the mechanics in an optimal way, having dozens of hours of experience in prior games, etc is a consequence of having the time to do it. Drop 1000 people in completely blind, and I'm sure the majority are going to rate it as one of the harder gaming experiences.

learn how to dodge, block and perry early on, or you will have a tougher time.

How much of Hollow Knight did you beat? The main game(even counting the true boss) is about on par or easier with beating a Souls game and all its DLC imo. Nightmare King Grimm gave me more trouble the first time I beat him than a lot of Souls bosses, and the Pantheon of Hallownest is way harder than anything in a Souls game for me.

I even do self imposed challenges like solo-ing every boss at level 1(4 in Bloodborne's case), but holy fuck is that last part of Hollow Knight's DLC tough. I might also just suck at Hollow Knight compared to Souls games.

They are hard the first time through.

As you learn the world and the attack patterns of the enemies, it becomes much easier. As you also add on the knowledge of how to properly make a character and where the best gear and upgrade stuff is, it becomes a cakewalk for the majority of the games.

Yes, they're hard. You can learn them, so that they become easier to you, but that's not what we usually mean by "easy game".

They're really not hard, they just punish you for brainless mashing and rushing in where other games would have rewarded you.
