And yeah, Hina is perfect because of how normal she is. Even the swimming is such a small part of her personality (rather than defining her, like some later girls in the franchise.) Plus, when her hair is down, or she's in the DR3 anime, she looks even hotter.

Oh man, gotta disagree here. The hair spike is a core feature, not a bug. And the DR3 anime screws everything up by putting everyone in boring business suits.

Worst DR girl for purposes of this waifu list would probably be Junko or Mikan.

Well, Mahiru might be worse, but she isn't around for as long so that helps. It's hard to build up antipathy for the characters who die early.

I don't think any of the DR3 girls are bad other than Angie. I like all the others.

Literally the only bad DR3 girl is Tsumugi. Everyone else is either meh (Himiko and Maid whose name Ive forgotten at this time), or a top tier character for the entire series.

Normally, I'm pro-girls in business suits, but not when they're athletes. Danganronpa has an aesthetic of lots of bright colors and flashy designs, stuffing everyone into business suits just doesn't work for me (except for Byakuya).

I should have clarified, most of the V3 girls are meh or straight up bad, and almost all of the DR3 girls are worse than them.

DR3-specific girls include:

• Candy Girl, who hates a woman with diabetes for not eating candy
• Diabetes Girl, who hates Candy Girl for being mean to her in high school
• Wheelchair Girl, who's a five year-old in a wheelchair

Even the worst of the game girls easily destroys all three of them.

Akane is good for 'character who jokes are made about,' but she's not as good a waifu, or as useful to the story, as Aoi.

The ranking I'm seeing has her in 15th for DR2. Below Teruteru.

Japan does not like tanned girls. Hina at 14th, Sakura at 13th, Akane at 15th, Angie at 14th.

It could just be for visual diversity, or it could be that they're disliked for reasons other than the tan.

Let it be known that when I googled Tae Takemi, "Tae Takemi Body Pillow" was the first option. No other waifu had anything like that happen. Is Tae way more popular than I thought, or is she such a middling P5 waifu that the handful of body pillow buyers pushed her into a weird spot compared to the others? I cannot answer this useless question. By the way, obviously surrounded by death referred only to her being the Death tarot card.

I said earlier that Miu is the waifu who benefits most from the category format I invented, but Taes not far behind. Like, if you told me to just directly rank all the Persona waifus, Tae would be pretty high, but nowhere near #1, and nowhere near #10 on this list. Im actually shocked she edged into the #1 Persona waifu over Mitsuru. I guess I may as well undermine my entire list by just super quickly ranking the Persona waifus (discounting the ones Im not familiar with), not even doublechecking the overall list to make sure theyre all in the correct order:

Sae > Makoto > Mitsuru > Kawakami > Tae > Margaret > Haru > Chie > Toriumi > Rise > Futaba > Aigis > Naoto > Chihiro > Hifumi > Yukiko > Sophia > Ann > Yukari > Fuuka > Yumi > Ai > Chihaya > Yuko > Ohya

Tae makes it this far based on basically two attributes. Certainly, its not how important she is to the story of her game, because she is by far the least important waifu remaining.

The first advantage Tae has is that shes the one and only proper doctor on the list. Frans a doctor, but shes also crazy, Fios into weird alternative medicine, and Sailor Mercury only plans to be a doctor. Tae actually is a doctor, which is pretty much the perfect job, waifu or otherwise. It pretty much cannot be beaten except by Olympic athlete or astronaut, and even then, for waifu purposes, it probably still beats both of them. She doesnt even have the disadvantage of traveling around a lot and not seeing you. Not only is doctor a wealthy, respectable job, but youre also set if you get sick or something. I know that in the context of P5, Taes a back alley doctor whose life was ruined when she was framed for using untested medicine on some kid, and that she works weird hours, but since you obviously know that shes secretly goodhearted and just seems like a weirdo, and that shes not actually responsible, its fine.

Not sure I agree with her scientific testing methods, though. Im pretty sure you have to test your experimental new medicine on several volunteer test subjects and publish it for other scientists to cross-examine instead of just drugging up the same teenage boy half a dozen times, but Ill allow it. Im just saying, though, I have to believe that a teenage boy whos been affected by magic metaphysical dimensions has to be the worst test subject ever, you would not be able to trust any of your data. Its like testing your medicine on the Elephant Man; the results will only be reliable if youre planning to exclusively treat people with Proteus Syndrome. I dont even know why I know what disease the Elephant Man had.

The second advantage is that Taes a goth waifu. I do like my goth waifus. For such a popular archetype, this list only has like four? And the idea of a goth doctor! What a strange combination, I cant think of anything like it. Normally, goths are associated with like magic and occultism, not out-and-out science? Im not complaining, though. Im imagining Tae as just a normal doctor with like brown hair or something, who doesnt wear high heel sandals, and she would not be particularly high in the looks department. The style really raises her above where she should probably be, is what Im saying. Like, when you go into her store to buy the only item in the game that matters (+SP per turn accessories), and for no good reason, theres a silhouette of her lounging with her high heels up against your TVs side, its so good.

Persona 5 is really good with that sort of style and presentation, and Tae really benefits from it. Thats another advantage she has over the P3 and P4 waifus; their games style is much less distinct. And I really appreciate her dark sense of humor. Thats not terribly uncommon among doctors, and I, too, like cynical jackass humor. I see this relationship working out extremely well.

Look, with Tae, it comes down to this: do you like dark, cynical waifus? Do you like goth and punk aesthetics? Do you like waifus with extremely tall high heels? Do you like waifus whose heads are too big for their bodies because the art style is kind of inconsistent? If the answer to all of these questions is yes, then Taes the waifu for you. Because Taes great. A relationship with her is likely to be kind of weird, but not in a bad way, so it all works out.

I docked her points for liking punk music, though. I cannot believe how many times punk music has come up in this list twice. Punk music is awful, and youre awful for liking it.

Why is Rise from the Ashes the only episode in the series without Turnabout in the title? Its not really from the first game, since it was added in rereleases, so it doesnt predate the idea, and its not a particularly special case that might warrant breaking the rules, so I just dont get it. Anyway, the two angry faces hint referred to the pins she wears as a teenager, where two of them are angry. Really, I should have just said four faces, since she wears three pins total, but it's fine. And poor Gumshoe! Having his role in the series completely usurped by Ema just because shes a cute girl and hes a middle-aged man. I think she even appears more often than he does? Lets see, hes in AA1, 2, 3, AAI, and AAI2, while shes in AA1, AAI, AA4, and AA6. So, I was wrong, but Im not going to go back and delete that even though it would take me less time than describing the process of me not deleting it. As long as there's never a loli police investigator, Ema is probably safe for the future.

Does Ema count as the last waifu left with a normal job? After this, we have a goddess, three princesses, a video gamer, an anti-bioterrorism activist, and a concert pianist. I guess pianists and competitive video game players might count as normal jobs, but Emas certainly got the only job left that wont raise some eyebrows.

Ema, of course, is beautiful. Deep brown hair, nice top-knot? bun?, pink sunglasses used to detect bloodstains (apparently she needs those at all times), all of its great. I wasnt into the pink hat she has in that one Edgeworth game, but luckily, she dumps it by the time shes an adult, which was the right call. The most important part, though, is the lab coat. I vaguely alluded to this with Tae, but scientist waifus are great. I dont know what I consider the best waifu aesthetic to be, but certainly a girl wearing a lab coat, looking smart, being smart, doing smart things is really high up there. I mentioned how business suit waifus who look more professional than you are great, but lab coat waifus are definitely better. I dont even really know what it is about lab coats, youd think their kind of unmarked formlessness would not be super conducive toward powerful waifuness, and yet we have definitive evidence to the contrary. Id say its probably more what they represent. As for Emas particular, I dont know, stances? Sprites? The way she holds herself? Theyre really good. I really like the way in later games where shes clearly shifting her weight onto her right foot, so her coat is slightly off-kilter. I like the way she awkwardly looks away while she talks, I like how she eats when she gets nervous, its all a very solid way to convey her personality. Hell, even her smug sprite is still ****ing adorable. Too bad her 16-year-old happy sprite is only used in her first appearance, though, because it gives a ton of personality and her adult version doesnt have her folding her hands in front of her waist. Liking it when anime girls fold their hands in front of their waists is a little particular, but hey, Ema just happens to hit a stance I like. Basically, what Im getting at is that I had no idea Ema was 53. I thought she was like 57 or something, shes much shorter than I expected.

While exploring the Phoenix Wright Wiki for more information, I stumbled upon this early concept art:

Im just going to say, that Maya looks terrible. I assume the vampire is von Karma, and the redhead is Mia or Dee Vasquez? I have no idea who the Judo guy is, but I'm confident that Leonhart will appear within thirty minutes after I post this and explain. I bring this up because Mayas pink sunglasses were eventually given to Ema, which is mildly interesting.

I already covered her personality a little bit, but Emas really high up there, too. Shes smarter than you, but has juuuuust the slightest unprofessionalism and weakness to make her relatable and not seem like shes just completely better than you. And yet, she never like breaks the law or compromises her ideals. That compares her to Gumshoe again, who constantly just ignores his duties to help Edgeworth. Im imagining Gumshoe trying to deal with Nahyuta, or anyone who hasnt played the games understanding what Im talking about right now. Basically, the point is that Ema is a good person whos optimistic and honest, but also enough of a professional that she doesnt let her feelings impact her job, unlike the series other cop. Like, if you want a waifu whos just really passionate about some weird niche thing that is actually a job, like police forensics, Ema is your girl. Even as an unofficial lawyer assistant, though, Ema still beats the hell out of her competition. I dont think shes as much fun as some of the others, but in terms of actually being useful, theres no question that Emas knowledge of police forensics is the most useful skill any of them possess, at least in the context of a murder mystery game. You might think thats obvious, but her competition includes two people who can speak to murder victims, and yet Ema is still the most useful.

It also goes without saying that Ema has the tremendous advantage of having just a completely normal, respectable job. Too bad that the people she investigates inevitably turn out to be innocent, but thats not her fault. If I was a lawyer in the Ace Attorney universe, I would do absolutely anything except take a case against Phoenix Wright or his friends. Similarly to Aoi, Emas big weakness is snack food? Imagine getting into a fight with your girlfriend or something, and you need a way to make it up to her and reconnect, and she goes wild for something you can easily buy at a 7-11. Yeah, okay, Ema also likes a childrens samurai show and hates horror movies, which puts us at odds, but thats by no means a dealbreaker. And since shes a forensic analyst, and not a normal cop, Ema doesnt even have to deal with the weird hours regular cops have to go through. I know about this because my sister used to date a cop, and he explained it all to me. And since Ema already lives in Los Angeles, we dont even have to deal with relocation problems. Basically, everythings coming up Ema.

I'm trying to decide if Ema is the highest-ranking Phoenix Wright waifu, and I think she is. Mia might be higher based on my categorization system, but I'd still put Ema above her in a direct ranking. Justine Courtney is hotter, but worse at everything else... I typed in 'Phoenix Wright waifus' to see if I was forgetting anyone, and that gave me mywaifulist.moe, which has Edgeworth as the #7 waifu in the series by peoples' votes. I'm actually shocked he's that low.

Were already well into the realm where every waifu is a keeper, so I cant even really sum this up in any meaningful way. Ema's just a really great waifu. I suppose the best way to end this is to say **** the vase puzzle, that ****'s unbearable. I had to look up a YouTube clip of it and precisely match the guy's movements to get it to register as correct. I completed everything else in the series legitimately, except the armpit sweat guy who I also had to look up, but the vase broke me.
