I made a few card switches throughout the event and yeah many of the versions didn't have Old Growth Troll for that reason. Surprisingly that one never actually bit me though--the ways I lost due to mana issues were just not drawing one of my colors at all.

I should also say I guess that I was never really intending to cast that on turn 3 though. I intended more as just a mid/late game body that generates another body when it dies. It was also quite nice as a target for the reanimate part of Blood on the Snow since I don't actually have enough snow sources to hit any of my 5 or 6 drops.

Have y'all played penny dreadful? It's a format with no banlist, but the only legal cards are 2c or less on Cardhoarder. The format is crazy diverse because like half the cards in the game are legal, but the cards that win the game on turn 3 are too expensive

It's always fun to go to pennydreadfulmagic.com and see what decks recently 5-0'd a league or whatever.

Played for a couple hours. Roughly half was with mouse/keyboard and the other half was with a controller.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that random planeswalkers appear and you see stuff like hedrons, it doesn't really feel like a MTG game. I guess that's kinda expected given what it is though.

Overall pretty mediocre game so far, can't see myself playing it much more.

Yeah I was watching some folks streaming it the past few days and it looks...competent, but also with no real reason to play it over any of the other Diablo-type games out there if I want to scratch that itch.

So some people might remember I qualified for the Kaldheim champs in the last qualifier, so I'm playing in the event today. Not going to post too specifically how I'm doing just because I don't really want to tie this username to my IRL name and may not update again at all, but whatever.

That being said I think my nerves are getting to me a bit. Completely and utterly punted my last match vs a pro player. Fortunately my draw was good enough that it didn't matter and I did win that set, but hopefully I've gotten my misplays out of the way now >.> At least I'm not 0-X though I guess!

Welp, didnt make day 2. Actually think I played fine other than that one game though.

Worst match was the game 3 when my opponent drew 4 Mayhem Devils in their top 12 cards. I was prepared to answer the 1st 3 but I was just so sad when the other one hit the field.

I'm kind of sad to see limited kaldheim going soon, even though it's been pretty solved from an archetype perspective. The strixhaven mechanics don't sound quite as exciting but I really hope I'm convinced otherwise

I really didn't like kaldheim. I didn't get it. I never got it. I'm happy it's gone.

It felt like there were only two good decks, boros aggro or random pile of snow cards.

I did like the Kaldheim limited format, though I only managed to get a little bit better at it as time went on. It felt to me like Temur Snow was the best deck. Really just green is the best color by far I think and any deck that's positioned to take advantage of that is in a good place, though I did also see reasonable success with red/white and red/black.

Not too excited for Strixhaven though tbh. Haven't thought much about how it plays in limited, but as far constructed goes it feels like a non-factor for Standard, whereas it's looking to shake up Historic in ways that terrify me. Really not looking forward to playing against Nissa+Time Warp decks or against black decks running 4x Thoughtseize and Inquisition. Granted, I wasn't the biggest Historic fan to begin with so maybe any change has the potential to be a good thing.

Stuff will definitely get banned in historic but Im excited to at least see how things shake out. Looking forward to casting some Brainstorms.

Kaldheim limited was mostly whatever for me. I think there were a handful of viable decks, but it did boil down to wanting to be in Boros or Snow Pile like 80% of the time, and to be honest I find the process of drafting with snow lands to be a bit of a headache. Strixhaven doesnt look all that enticing from the spoilers but Im willing to see how it shapes out.

I burned all my saved gems to get wildcards for the last qualifier weekend. Which I went like 2-3 in anyways RIP. Also who even knows if the deck I got is going to continue to be relevant now that Historic is getting the mystic archives or whatever it's called...

In any case I probably won't be able to do a huge amount of drafts for a bit since now I've also gotta save up for the mastery pass :(

Ended up 6-3 in my first draft with a pretty good Witherbloom deck, splashing blue for the Quandrix Elder Dragon. Got a little unlucky with mana flood in a few of the games, but the deck felt pretty good. The mythic lesson is really strong.

Not loving having the archive cards running around in draft so far, though.

I have a sealed deck right now with the Witherbloom deans + Silverquill dragon and theres some really cool synergy between the lifegain and +1/+1 counter strategies. Its super fun

(update: this deck got 7 wins hell yeah. Silverquill dragon rules, 5 mana black creature who drains 1 whenever a creature with a counter attacks also rules)

A lot of the time it was just a trade of putting a +1/+1 counter on one or two weak creatures and then I get a card or a flier. The trade-off never fucked me over, and having a big double striking flier is pretty good too.

Doing a Witherbloom draft. It's pretty wild so far since I'm so not used to these colour combinations doing.. whatever they're doing. It's refreshing.

Currently doing one draft because I did have enough gold to enter 1 that way. I'm 3-2 right now though I don't expect to get too many more wins because I feel like my deck isn't that strong.

Playing Witherbloom. My last win was a really weird game that I kind of cheesed out. My opponent decked out despite being "ahead" by pretty much any measure other than cards in library, but I had Lisette, Dean of the Root which could give my entire board +1/+1 counters every time a pest token chump blocked. My opponent was still ahead in terms of board presence but this was enough to make it so my opponent was never able to profitably attack, and eventually I just won since he'd been very aggressively drawing cards in the early game and apparently didn't have removal (he was blue/green to be fair).

Think I like this format so far though. There's lots of cool looking synergies, and Learn seems like a pretty neat mechanic for for limited.

Ok, I did one single Sealed. Went for an aggressive-ish G/B and splashed for Multiple Choice. Wandering Archaic felt really strong, and Karok Wrangler also did a lot of work for me.

I actually think the mystical archive cards are really cool. Because of mage craft the boring ones like defiant strike and opt are way better than normal, and most of the rares and mythical are too situational to be insane. I first picked a natural order, than realized it really wasnt that great unless I got multiple book wurms

LSV streamed a quandrix ramp deck that won with a splashed approach of the second sun and it was incredible to watch.

Sure it was good, and I won 2 games hitting the opponent for 10 out of nowhere with it, but I actually cast it in both games I lost as a 5 mana kill spell or an 8 mana kill 2 spell that didnt matter because I was dead anyways.

I think the real problem with it is if my opponent was at 10 or less and I had 8 mana the game was pretty much already over. A 5 mana 5/5 probably would have also been enough to push me over the edge as at that point I was both the beat down and the control. I think the card is still good, but I went from thinking it was an A level Bomb to just a B level solid red card.

Returned past caller on the other hand was consistently excellent when I casted it, and using it as a gravedigger for my already dead returned past callers was gross. Have to be in a controlling shell with enough removal but even turns as simple as 7 mana get back a shock, kill your x/2 were awesome.

Also the 3 mana 3 damage learn card is probably a bomb. Pick up a summoning and its a build your own flame tongue kavu

Winota is looking very good for standard. The R/W deck can now work really consistently without her and obviously gets monstrous with her.

I think Silverquill wasn't open but the other silverquill drafters weren't taking the good aggressive cards so I ended up short on playables which made me fairly unhappily play cards like duress
