I got offered a job. I took the physical, background check, and hair follicle test there. I am supposed to start Monday.

However, a job I applied to first and was waiting for a response from called an hour ago and offered me a job now.

  1. Is it a dick move to back out of the first job after all that was done before my start date and take the other job?
  2. Which job would you take?

Job 1.
Starts at 18.22 for probationary period which is 6 months then jumps to 22.50. This job has a Pension of 3.35 an hour contributed. No 401k match. It also has great medical with $0 contribution. It however has a $200-$400 (single/family) deductible and 80/20 after for a max out of pocket of $1000-$2000. It has incentive pay which could be $100-$200 a week. It also has shower time pay which is a flat $9 a shift. However, it is a job where you work in a very dirty environment. It also entails working in a Blast Furnace with molten slag and iron which is 2200 degrees. High heat. This job is 45 minutes away. Has forced doubles (If forced on a double from 7am-11pm you are looking at leaving at 5:30 am to get there on time (possibly a bit earlier if conditions merit it) and getting home around 12:20am (possibly later again on conditions) due to showering, walking out, and etc). No vacation the first year. 1 week after 1 year. 2 weeks after 2 years. Next bid up job is 23.50 then 25.50. Has Sunday pay at 1.5x rate.

Job 2.
Starts at $20 hour for probationary period and jumps to $28 an hour after about 2-3 months. This job does not have a pension but does match up to 7% 401k. It has bad medical. I have been told its somewhere around $200 a month for family medical. Deductible of $2000-$4000 then 80/20 for a max out of pocket of like $6000. No incentive pay. No shower time (don't require you to shower there). It is a cleaner environment. It does not entail extreme heat. This job is 25 minutes away on a straight shot on a main road. Has forced 12s but anything over 12 is voluntary, eliminating the sleeping issue. 3 weeks vacation from the start. Next bid up job from the start is 33.50. (They also have a gym on site). Would start Christmas week. This job has a bonus that is based on a proportion of your pay for the year, once per year (no idea on amount). I don't think it has Sunday pay. Has a 6th day every 4 weeks for guaranteed overtime.

Which would you take and is it a dick move to back out on job 1 to take job 2?

For reference, I was making $34 at my last job.

Did you agree to the first job already? Sounds like they are still doing a bunch of screening to see if you are eligible, in which case you are golden.

Having said that, job 2 sounds way better and I would rather have an employee backout before starting then leaving 8 weeks in so I probably would still try to gracefully exit

Next Monday?

Without knowing your field I don't know the best way to get out of it, but I think that is enough time to get out of it.

I would REALLY make sure you have job 2 first though

Job 2 said I have the job absolutely as long as I pass background checks, physical, and drug test (which I just did at the last job).

Job 1 is in Steel - Blast Furnace
Job 2 in a Chemical Company. Make resins.

Job 2 easily.

Is it a dick move to back out of Job 1 so soon? Sure, but they'll get over it that same day. The worst is training a new employee for a few weeks and then they quit. So the sooner the better. That's been my experience when we've hired people.

When I took my job in California, it was a monumentally better offer, but the job I actually got in Pennsylvania gave me one day to decide, and in case the CA job fell through, I needed to take the PA one. I worked there for four days, flew out, and signed my contract in CA and then quit on Monday. I felt bad about it, but I had to do it.

After being jerked around by jobs enough, you come to realize there's no point in being loyal. You need to look out for yourself, because if push comes to shove they'd look out for themselves before you. Don't be beholden to any business. Do what's best for you, even if it screws them over. They'll make due.

Job 2 is the job I wanted from the start. They just took forever in the hiring process that I actually had my interview with Job 2 before anything with Job 1 and Job 1 got all of the stuff done before Job 2 even responded today lol.

I agree 100% with Biscuit. It's a dick move, sure, but it's your life and your work.

$200 a month for family medical really isn't that bad, it sounds to me like it's an HDHP compared to a PPO from Option 1. That means you have more flexibility with those funds and you can rollover more of the dollars from year to year (only if it's an HDHP, definitely confirm that). Plus a TMOOP of $6k isn't that awful, the ACA marketplace maximum for 2020 is $16k and the US family average is $8.4k.

You can supplement it with a HSA. I don't know the exact plan.

Job 2 for sure, and backing out is not a dick move. It'd be a dick move if they'd already trained you and such (though I'd still say, it's your own life and it's worth being a dick to get a much better job). But here it hasn't even started yet so yeah.

I've been a corporate trainer and head of training at my company for years. We get people that back out of offers all the time just before the start date. We also get people that back out of the job mid-training (keep in mind we fly them in for their initial 2 weeks of training and pay for all expenses).

And I still far prefer someone back out before or in that first 2 weeks than within their first 6 months within the company. It's not a dick move really as it's the right move for both parties in the long run. Far better to work that out sooner rather than later.

You are also giving up 40 minutes a day. I think when you factor that in the pay discrepancy isn't as much, if not nonexistent.

It's way more than just 40 minutes. Mills are huge. Walking to job, showering, walking back.

I agree job 2 is a quality of life improvement. It's why I think job 2 is what I am going with. I would definitely probably eventually earn more money at job 1 though. If not right away. Mills destroy new hires with forced doubles. 3-5 times a week is not unheard of. Every week.

Seems funny to you but it is against the law not to shower on the premises for those kinds of jobs and the unions had to get a supreme court ruling to get paid for that. It's also the equivalent of more than an extra dollar an hour.

No, it's a job, not a promise to your mother in law. Even if you did all your training, if you suddenly got a better opportunity, it would be totally normal and expected to leave.

You can lose eligibility if you turn down a job you don't even initially accept. I've seen people who turned down a job that paid minimum wage that they applied to years beforehand lose their UE when they turned down the job. It all depends on the company.

My cousin had to file an appeal when Levin Furniture reported him for turning down their minimum wage job that paid like half of what his unemployment was. He won on appeal because he successfully argued the job wasn't viable due to wage offered and distance.
