Everybody who hasn't already should try Hollow Knight if they have any remote interest in Metroidvanias, Souls-likes, cool boss fights, great OSTs and/or immersive background storytelling. Or bugs, though those people also have Bugsnax I guess.

Is Shadow of War any good? It's the only game no one has mentioned, but I'm not getting a PS5 yet and I have PS Now which has Hollow Knight (and Xrd R2, for that matter!)

seemed like just more Shadow of Mordor but didn't really do anything new or exciting

Shadow of War had a lootbox controversy when it came out, IIRC the grinding in late game was extremely bad in an attempt to force players to pay for random lootboxes to level up faster or recruit orcs or something. I didn't play it myself but I think maybe they fixed that? The whole game was definitely padded with microtransactions and dodgy DLC though. Also they made the spider a sexy lady.

Shadow of Mordor was great and has none of that messy stuff so maybe go with that instead.

Shadow of War I couldn't even play for more than a couple hours, just way too much shit going on. Overstuffed, if you will.

so I started playing Hollow Knight. I kind of like it but am playing blind and there are like a million different ways you can go. I feel like I should be using a guide or something but i just kind of want to play it blind and oh well if I miss some stuff I guess. The completionist in me is a bit irked though.

If you liked Shadow of Mordor you'll probably liked SoW. It's more of the same with way more variables for the Nemesis system.

The lootbox issue was drastically overstated and they were never necessary or forced on you. The endgame was grindy, this bit is true, but it was grindy regardless and no amount of purchased lootboxes would have slowed the grind. Like it was just a lengthy ass campaign of taking and retaking fortresses and buying orcs that were no better than the ones you can mind control wouldn't have helped. The lootboxes have also been taken out and the endgame grind cut in half so it's worth a shot.

I actually fell off of it at the end due to how stupid long the Shadow War endgame was and only went back to it like a year later after they patched it to a more bearable length for the plat.

Guffguy, have you not played many Metroidvanias? 100% don't use a guide. The whole point of these games is in exploring the world, unlocking new abilities which will then allow you to reach new parts of the world. They are meant to be exceedingly nonlinear with certain paths gated until you get the required abilities. But there is virtually no "wrong" way to go or to explore the world!

Also there is nothing missable whatsoever; you will always be able to go back to areas to get 100% item completion.

Just an update on this, I have been playing Hollow Knight and it is really enjoyable, though a bit challenging at times.

I have not played a sidescroller-type game like this since Undertale, so it's not my usual cup of tea, but I am enjoying it immensely!

Bugsnax beated

Pretty fun game, neat idea, cute, starts wearing down after a bit but luckily its maybe 10 hours at best and easy to do everything. The story is a little more devious than it seems but only a little. It does kind of go off the rails but in a way that is logical for the story to go by the end

Game is like Pokemon Snap, Pikmin?, Firewatch, Muppets meet Veggie Tales

Just to finish up my commentary on Hollow Knight. Just finished the game. Got to the egg with about 76% completion and used a guide to get the rest of the tidbits I missed. I'm kinda skipping most of the Godhome stuff, but overall, a very enjoyable but challenging game! I recommend anyone who hasn't played it yet to try it out.

Ha. The Path of Pain. I felt the whole White palace area was a path of pain. Needless to say I didnt even try the actual path of pain.

This is false; you can get Bugsnax from the usual sites. Its the PS+ Collection that requires an actual PS5 to redeem.

(I was hoping to use one belonging to my sister-in-law but apparently I misremembered and they dont actually have one yet.)

i'm not sure what this means, but if you're someone who doesnt game on Nintendo or PC (i have been an almost exclusive playstation gamer for about 20 years now), it's pretty easy to not experience games that are styled like Hollow Knight's is.
