I think I have had a total of maybe 3 days since March where my account hasn't been suspended or in purg, so I've had a lot of time to myself. I'd love to chat about it :)

What I've been playing

Animal Crossing got kind of (very) stale once we paid off our house, so I quickly moved back to the Ace Attorney trilogy for Switch (PSA: the Japanese physical release plays all the titles in English!).

I beat Justice for All and plan on starting Trials and Tribulations soon, which I hear is the consensus best in the series. I think overall, I prefer the original to JFA, but it's still pretty remarkable how consistent the trilogy has been as a whole.

I am glad that JFA didn't become too gimmicky like I expected after playing the final case in the original, though the psyche locks didn't really add anything particularly interesting for me. Still a great game overall, and I completely understand the b8 obsession from 15 years ago now. I think a 16 or 17 year old me would have really appreciated this.

What I've been watching

Some of you may remember my SephG Top 250 list from late last year, and I am happy to say that I have seen at least three films that would likely crack that top ~40, which I never would have expected!

Parasite
I made a topic about this last year before it became big in the US, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it (since I saw it after I already completed my list). This, along with Boyhood, are easily the two best films of the 2010s for me and are absolutely worth watching more than once.

Sound of Music
I really, really don't like musicals, but with quarantine in effect, I forced myself to watch the classics that I'd never bothered with before. And lo and behold, I discovered what I think just might be the GOAT in the Sound of Music.

Everything about this--from the gorgeous cinematography, to the seamless and purposeful integration of songs, to the genuinely tense moments near the end--lives up to its name. I found myself enjoying a genre that never really moved me, but that is also perhaps because it functions as a fantastic war movie as well.

And speaking of...

Come and See
Dear God is this a monumentally brutal film. And not in a gratuitous way either. For those who may not know, Belarus (the location of this movie) lost one-quarter of its population in World War II. Not one-quarter of its soldiers or even one-quarter of its adult population. One-quarter of its overall population--more than any other nation on earth, possibly in any conflict ever.

So naturally, the film is reflective of that carnage. There isn't much I can say about it without ruining some of the shocking moments, but I will warn you that it is disturbing. But it's also the second-best war movie I've ever seen (only behind the legendary Apocalypse Now). The criterion restoration was just released as well, if anyone is looking to check it out.

Game of Thrones

Starting rewatching the series, and man, what a stark (no pun intended) reminder of how awful seasons 7 and 8 are. What an all-time waste.

What I've been thinking about

Well, as it is an election year, politics is obviously on the forefront of my mind. At the risk of being moderated, I'll keep my thoughts pretty high level.

Good Man Joe Biden is almost certainly going to win the election, and the Democrats are likely going to regain the Senate. It saddens me to say this, but the Media has truly kneecapped Trump this year and the GOP with him. Just look at virtually any headline in the past two months and compare to last year--they aren't even attempting to hide their contempt for him now. And it's working.

That shouldn't surprise though, as (fairly or unfairly) Trump has absolutely brought this on himself. When you specifically call out members of the media personally, bash them for how they make a living and imply that they should be jailed, the veneer of unbiased coverage is going to inevitably slip off. That's what we're seeing now, and they are truly (along with Big Tech) controlling the narrative for that ~10% of the population that decides the election.

That's not to say that this is over quite yet. Look for the following things to have an effect on the polling, maybe even to the point it sways the election. This is a SephG bold prediction:

Biden will lose ground once he is back in the spotlight
Believe you me, the Democrats already realize this one. Notice how Biden went from clear frontrunner to underdog in the span of one month once the primary debates started heating up and his poor public speaking ability was exposed? The more he is on that stage, the riskier it will be for his pole position. If he were smart, he could probably guarantee a victory by simply refusing to debate Trump, full stop.

Watch out for a vaccine October Surprise
Coronavirus news coverage isn't going away anytime soon, and many states will flatly refuse to allow any cultural institutions (sporting events, concerts) or schools to re-open before November. That is, unless the American free market produces a vaccine early enough (September or early October). Once the story shifts to a victory over coronavirus, the tide may turn as we get back to normal. It's a race against the clock at this point.

Let's discuss, friends.

Also I have been drinking mezcal more often and would love for recommendations for a go-to bottle for my bar. Something good enough to drink on its own but not too good where it would be sacrilege to mix it into a cocktail.

We typically just use Vida for mixing. It's not expensive, and you can find it everywhere. El Silencio is fine too.

Most of the nicer mezcals are not really worth mixing with and are better enjoyed on their own.

It's decent on its own, but I feel like you're better off getting a bottle for mixing and a bottle for drinking on its own. But that's generally my stance with most liquors.

Although it's worth noting that there's a lot of bullshit in mezcal now because it's trendy, so I'd be careful with which "nice" bottle you pick up.

Parasite and Come and See are both in my all-time top 10. I wish Come and See got more attention. To me, it felt like if young David Lynch tried his hand at making a straightforward war film. It's the only movie I know to outdo Eraserhead's dreadful atmosphere.

i do remember hearing about parasite first from you. glad i went to see it in theaters! that said, i've watched 3-4 more bong movies since then (plus burning) and none comes anywhere close! (for other '19 movies, i like little women okay, loved avengers endgame, and LOVED knives out.)

sound of music has some nice songs. i watched it as a kid and remember finding the non-singijg parts kinda tedious though!

re: phoenix wright - no comment on how great 2-4 was makes me sad! i think the real key to the magatama is that it saves you some cross examinations. anyway, i think those cases overall take themselves seriously, while AA3 has more ridiculousness again.

Biden isn't just "going to win", it is going to be a complete and total annihilation. Trump is going to win less than five states. Biden will win Texas by over 5%. It's not at all the media's fault, it is completely and entirely a self-own.

at this moment, i don't get why biden > trump is particularly debatable tbqh. it's not like trump was ever strong to begin with. hillary was an unbelievably atrocious candidate and she still barely lost to trump. in b4 "actually she didn't lose at all ololo" yes, biden also sucks, but he's a lot better than hillary. combine that with trump completely ruining it for himself with his response to covid/the protests and this shouldn't be a close election.

i don't find arguments like "but biden will suck in the debates!" too convincing. like, have you seen trump in debates? lol

I mean, Come and See has been in the imdb top 250 for well over 15 years, and that list is about as simple as it gets for basic movie fans. I'd think that most people who consider themselves film fans (people who like cinema enough to look up things on their own and read movie sites) would know of it.

yeah, all the "biden is terrible at debating" people seem to ignore that the consensus has been that he's been decent in most of the debates so far.

that doesn't guarantee that he won't be bad in one-on-one debates with trump, but there's no particular reason to assume that he'll be bad, either.

I was close, 14 years.

http://www.timo-schreiter.de/imdb/index.php
(search "Idi i smotri")

The way this site works is it just does a single snapshot at the beginning of the month. So for films like this that usually sat in the 200-250 range, they would fall in and out of the top 250 on a daily basis due to tight score differences, so they wouldn't always make the snapshot. But you get the idea.

It was definitely popping in out irregularly from 2008-2012. Though it should be noted in 2012, imdb drastically raised the amount of votes required to be on the list, so there was a 4 year period from 2012-2016 where it didn't have enough votes to be eligible, but then it returned when it had reached that number, and it seems to be a mainstay since.

Sanitation jobs do pay relatively well and have great benefits, however they are still considered lower middle class at best. Class is more than just your paycheck, its respect/opportunity/freedom/generational stability and improvement/dating field/etc. Your typical garbage truck driving job will not grant you much in that department. Seph definitely made the most out of the baseline level of opportunity that his parents provided for him and made something better of himself

Classes are not defined by the amount that they are paid. There are only two of them in capitalist society: working class, and capitalists. When people refer to the 'middle class', they do not mean a different class than the working class, they mean a managerial or educated sort of profession that relies on skills that are not related to manual labor or the sort of service or monotonous task based jobs associated with 'lower' classes, in order to effectively divide the working class into opposing interest groups. Hence, when one disparages sanitation workers, they are propagating a narrative that benefits the ruling class by making 'middle class' dupes feel superior to fellow members of the working class in spite of being a part of the same class, and allowing members of the working class to in turn feel such hatred for the way they are treated by the 'middle class' to be easily manipulated by the powers that be.

It might be that the protests are just so loud that you can't ignore them, but that's nothing to do with Trump, it's your neighbors. But I guess that is the kind of thing you wanted him to keep out of your backyard. That's giving a lot of credit to the protestors too. If you're not careful you might end up joining them.
