I bet holding a house centipede feels really cool. I've only held little millipedes and let them crawl around on my hand, it's kinda tickly.

bit too bitey for me. won't do anything to you, like a bee, but still not a fan of the thought.

@dolomedes

You should take classes for this stuff, you truly have a passion for it.
It might help you feel better at times.

i have taken classes for this stuff. i quit when financial aid would no longer cover me taking courses that weren't going towards my degree. seriously, i dream about going to grad school - but i'm not interested in finishing an undergraduate degree so that won't happen.

i took all the electives i could at my last university (including one cross-listed grad course that i took in my first semester and got into without any of the prerequisites lol) and in the summer i was lucky enough to be able to take a handful of 1- or 2-week intensive field courses in biology. i was sometimes able to tag along on field trips for courses i wasn't in, i became a sort of honorary grad student in the small college, ha - and then professors who had known me to be an awesome student in the field were disappointed at having to fail me for not completing assignments.

school's dumb. i'm gonna do hobby science.

tbh in my last semester in college i knew it was my last so i only took courses i wanted to - so i took an art class. it was everything i'd wanted in a science course...
instructor came in, gave a 10-20 minute lecture, and then it was 2.5 hours of work. we were given an assignment and the way to progress through was completely up to us. the instructor was there for support, guidance, whatever.

i've probably put in a total of 7 years in college (2 ccs, 2 unis) and every laboratory science course was the fucking same - here's several pages of instructions with bullshit questions in between. fill this out. turn in. get grade. go home.
empty. they kill science for so many people. it's such an anti-scientific approach. whatever.

moths are majestic af.

underrated too. butterflies gets all the credits while moths are some of the most bizzarre beauties

Butterflies also get credit for being active during the day and tend to have more accessible caterpillars. Hawk Moths are particularly fascinating. They fly really fast and with precision. They're like diet hummingbirds kinda >_>. In fact some species are active during the day, have clear wings, look like tiny hummingbirds and even are literally called hummingbird moths.

Other types of Hawk Moths, particularly ones with caterpillars that feed on mass-farmed plants like tomato, potato, tobacco etc. are often caught on night vision cameras as "light spirals" and are the subject of paranormal investigations because they fly so fast and straight that on the camera, they appear as a spiraling streak of light. I saw a documentary on that phenomenon and immediately knew what it was. The investigators debunked it as "some kind of insects" and I was like "bruh... you can narrow it down more than that lol"

i don't know that i've seen an emperor moth. a few imperial moths, some luna moths, a cecropia, and a surprising number of polyphemus moths.

what other big saturniids does the eastern us get??

I've never seen Imperial or Regal. I may have once had an Imperial caterpillar near me when I was a kid. There was a pine tree I liked to climb in my yard and one time I was standing near it and I saw a massive caterpillar shit just fall on the ground under the tree. I climbed up to try and find it but was not successful. I would absolutely love to have a Hickory Horned Devil. Those things are fucking majestic.

Seen some Luna, a few Cecropia and a bunch of Polyphemus (My parents have a birch tree next to their house that they found cocoons under several years in a row. I was never visiting at the times they emerged though unfortunately). There are some others but I've never seen any, such as Promethea and Cynthia (I think the latter are more in the south though).

I hear ya man. It's a money machine.
Luckily there are books, and now the internet to help.

school's dumb. i'm gonna do hobby science.

Hell fucking ya dude.

That is exactly where I'm at. I figured that out a long time ago. ((I think I'm a bit older.))
It's the same with music. I play the piano but have no real interest in joining a band and all that.

But even closer to the point, and regarding me talking your ear off about geology...That is reallly my mindset. There were many times I was parked somewhere odd, next to a road cut, or some lookout, or hiking spot, that was questionable, okay...I always was ready to tell any cop that I was an amateur geologist with the knowledge I could explain how. Even if was just, really chillin' by a waterfall.

Some people say, make your hobby your job and you never work a day.
But sometimes, keeping your hobbies yours is a wise desition.

I know geology, but I don't want to tap oil wells or look for suitable places for unsuitable buildings.

I'd rather play the piano when the moment hits me.
And look over a landform and actually see Millions, if not Billions of years of history. :-)

If you get bored skim or read this. There was an earth quack in the Adirondacks recently.
But I bring it because it briefly describes some of the uniqueness of these mountains.
Also, I've been very close to where that star is, many times.
It is a place called The Siamese Ponds Wilderness area.
That is one of the untouchable Wilderness areas I was talking about.
~No cars, no motors of any kind, and no new construction.

Ya, if that turns out to be a volcano the whole world is fucked...not in our lifetime, or anytime soon. But as of now, it is rising with no explanation at all. It has already pushed off probably miles of earth.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Eurypterus remipes.
This guy swam over the rocks that would one day be pushed up to create The Adirondacks.
It is the New York State Fossil, but to this day, I don't have a sample.
