Board 8 > Would you be interested in a draft-based competition with X-Men characters?

I've been mulling this over the past few days, and I thought it might be fun to run a draft-style season-format tournament where 16 people build X-Men teams and pit them against one another in two criteria. The first would be "Who would win in a fight?" The second would be "How readable is this team as the focus of a comic book series?"

I have a lot more to this concept, but I don't want to push this until I know if I could even get enough people for this game. I think it would be low commitment, with each team only having one match a week, with a total of 8 matches followed by a finals match for the two highest-scoring teams in each category. So if your worry is having time to do this, really just the draft might be the big thing here, and I wouldn't be expecting everyone to rush it in one single day (although I'd like to finish it within a week).

If you are legitimately interested and would not flake on this in the middle, post here. Or ask questions, whatever you want. My goal is 16, but maybe it would only be 12 or 10.

I am down. My marvel knowledge is a bit better than my dc but still not great. So I would be willing to be a cut spot if you got enough guys but this sound fun

X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force, Excalibur, New Mutants, Generation X.

No Exiles to keep things relatively simple.

What is the weekly commitment after the draft?

How are the results of the matches determined? Poll?

The commitment would be to be around enough to at least once pitch why your team could beat the opposite team. Of course, checking in somewhat regularly would be nice just to keep discussion exciting.

Players will be split into two divisions, and everyone will eventually play everyone else in their division. Then the leaders in both categories from both divisions will face each other in the finals.

Ten rounds, 7 members involved in each fight. Every character will have to be used twice.

You really don't have to know much. You can learn a lot by reading wikis of powers and stuff! It's also meant to just be fun!

Yeah, the idea is a lottery order and then each round reverse the previous round's order, so last in round 1 gets first in round 2, etc.

And, if this proves fun, the second draft (thinking Justice Leaguers) would see the winner drafting last in round 1.

So what I'm thinking is that, for draft week, we'll pick some set hours and you just have to make your choice within an hour of the choice before yours. We can adjust that as necessary, of course.

IIRC the x-men are super unbalanced power wise, but there are enough overpowered characters and a little bit of a rock paper scissors thing going on to potentially keep it interesting

I will be disappointed if people vote by coolness instead of power!

I feel like the "why" of these guys fighting might be important. Or at least it would prevent the most dreaded of comic arguments, wildly OOC behavior. "So Iceman just instantly kills the other team, GG." "Iceman wouldn't do that, he's fundamentally a good guy." "Yeah but he wants to win." "Yeah but..."

I would absolutely agree that the argument shouldn't be "this character could just murder everyone," but I think even if someone tries to argue that most if not all characters have at least soft if not hard counters. Your example of Iceman isn't having an easy time with the likes of Cannonball or Sunspot, for example, and that's if a psychic doesn't just disrupt him. So yes, votes should 100% be based on how the character would act given their powers, but I think voters will consider that sub consciously.

Is my main interest, used to love when scarlet did those kinda topics back in the day. Who would win in a fight is mild interest at best.

A thing I like about Hickmans current Age of X line of books is the teams are so drastic from the norm. Its Hickman though and I know what nonsense planet this is going to though.

While the readable part is extra interesting it's going to be hard to draft teams with known chemistry. I expect a 0% chance that any of Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine or Professor X end up on the same team, for example. The deeper you go, the less chemistry there is beyond pure speculation. How much does an average person know about how Dazzler and Marrow would interact?

Weighted towards X-team tenure and including outside appearances in other media.

This was my first thought. Is Doop in this? Magneto? X-man?

I'm open to bans, but I think there are counteractions to all three of these. Also, I will be presenting rules that will mean you can't wholly rely on one character the entire time.
