I was using my laptop

it abruptly shut off

it would not turn back on

I turned it over to take the battery out

something sparked and there was smoke

same thing happens if I try to put the battery back in

this is bad news

That's way bad. Your laptop should have shut down before getting to that point if it was pure heat issues, though, unless that setting was turned off in the bios. Anyway, take the hdd out and see if you can salvage your files, because even if it was a battery leak you're at the point where you can't do anything about the rest of it now. Oh, and if there does seem to be any signs of battery leakage be very careful with it.
