Topic | It's pronounced "Zee"! Not "Zed"! |
robrobd 06/02/17 6:28:42 AM #22 | darkknight109 posted... Z derives from the Phoenician letter "Zayin" and the Greek "Zeta" (which, in traditional Greek, is pronounced zeh-ta rather than the English pronunciation of zay-ta). "Zed" is closer to those than "zee" and is also closer to foreign pronunciations of the word (in German, for instance, the pronunciation is "zet"). In ancient Greek (or at least, 5th Century BC Attic Greek), the traditional pronunciation ascribed to zeta is a zd sound as in English "wisdom", which would lend this argument for "zed" further credence. Not sure how much that actually reflects how the letter came to be pronounced in English though. --- Hi there |
