Society has collectively decided that greed IS necessary. For all we preach about the virtues of caring for others and how money isn't everything, we've spent many decades tuning our systems to make sure that the greedy choice is always the "correct" one.

As much backlash as there would've been in light of selling GZ separately, the best thing they could've done, IMO, to salvage such an overambitious mess would've been to split it up more. Instead of doing Afghanistan and Africa in one game, put all the dev time into making Afghanistan better with more complex bases, more mission variety and one-off gimmicks like bosses, and worthwhile side content.

Metal Gear games usually have such tightly paced gameplay (regardless of how not tightly paced the cutscenes get), that releasing a game so full of filler is pretty much antithetical to the series.

In the beginning at least, he did better than most people who had comparable opportunities. The problem is that "people with comparable opportunities" is a laughably small percentage of the total population. But regardless, however smart he was ~10 years ago doesn't make him any less of a shithead today. Being so successful you can surround yourself with an impenetrable wall of yes-men causes actual brain rot.

"Deserve" doesn't even play into it. All people need shelter, and having shelter shouldn't hinge on it being profitable for someone else.

I agree that framing these kinds of things in terms of "deserving" is kinda problematic. We shouldn't be trying to judge people, we should be trying to do what's best for everybody overall, and I think you'd get a pretty solid majority of people to generally agree that widespread homelessness is not a good thing.

My attempt as being unbiased as someone who played them way after the fact is that it's kinda complicated. Like, no they're both way too janky in multiple aspects to hold up today at all, and even at the time those issues would've still been a problem, but there's more to their appeal than just low standards for Sonic games. They were full of sound, ambitious, and ahead-of-their-time ideas that were let down by the execution being so sketchy.

Obviously it's natural to compare them to platformers of the time and see how bad they look because of the mechanics, but if you compare them to the more modern AAA story-driven single player action adventure paradigm, they're just like a really, really primitive version of that, and it's sort of impressive considering what they were working with. For '98/'01, I can see how they were impressive to anyone who could overlook how they actually played.

The problem with matchmaking is that it creates a death spiral if the game isn't popular enough. With a server browser, you can see exactly how many people are playing and what modes/maps they're playing. With matchmaking, you have no idea if *anyone* is playing so if you can't join a game in a reasonable time, you just assume the game is completely dead and never try again.

People act like they get to just live in a separate reality from politics. That's not how it works, there will always be people in charge doing things and whether directly or indirectly a lot of the things they do will impact you. So yes, instead of whining about motivations or whatever, just vote for the outcomes you want, because "no outcomes" is not a thing.
