Bed of Chaos is such bullshit. Having to dive onto that branch while getting swept away is infuriating. Then I died once when I was almost at the centre because of that fire stuff. Brutal, but done.

Also brutal was having to kill Solaire :( He found his own sun I guess, but he was attacking me, so I had to do it. RIP Sunbro.

Kiln of the First Flame has 5 respawning black knights, and they keep dropping titanite chunks, so that's sweet. And bits of their armor. The shield is quite sweet actually. Since you can see I've traversed this multiple times, you can tell I have not beaten Gwyn yet. He's fast and he hits like a goddamn truck. I've been able to parry a few times, and gotten him down to about 1/5 hp on two occasions, but haven't beaten him yet. I'm thinking successfully parry his opening attack (which I've done a couple times), circle and go two-handed as he gets up, and hit him at least once there. Then stay in close (his range has been absolutely destroying me), wait for his grab, sidestep/dodge around, hit him twice with a two-hand swing, hope for a stagger, get one more hit, then back away a little to recover stamina.

These lava T-Rex things are super annoying. Sometimes itll jump up and Ill block its attack coming down and take no damage. Sometimes itll take a decent chunk of hp away. Thankfully they dont respawn, and Ive killed a few, but ugh.

Explored Lost Izalith for a bit, found the bonfire hidden in one of the towers. I thiiiink I know where to go, but itll take a lotta traversing the lava. Praise the Sun for that ring the centipede demon dropped

Demon Firesage was literally a stray demon clone, while being on fire. Was just annoying to get behind him before his magic explosion because he kept jumping back first.

Centipede Demon was fucking terrifying. Add in the tiny walkable arena, and it was a bit dicey. Killed me once because one of his attacks put me in the lava.

Found a bonfire, and Solaire was there, seeming quite upset.

Playing the 360 version and dont have the DLC. At least, not yet. I can see how much it is and likely get it though!

Ceaseless Discharge is dumb. Died a few times because I literally could barely dodge anything it did. Not a fan of that boss.

Kept exploring the Demon Ruins a bit, had to kill 7 Taurus Demons that were randomly there. Then a Capra Demon. So apparently bosses are regular enemies now? Thats all the progress I made yesterday, so will play more later today.

Jesus fuck these ghosts suck. They die in one hit, but they go through walls, and come from above and below. Supremely annoying, especially when the transient curse runs out and I have to back off to reapply it.

Anyway, got through it, got the seal from the guy on the roof, who mentions that he has the seal for the Four Kings. Well fuck, hopefully it's not a 4 on 1. Used the seal and drained the water. Saw three mini dragons and the outside area looked like a link to the Drake Valley. Fought some dark knight wraith things, and a giant fucking mass with a face on it, that spat out those exploding heads. And a random spear with crazy range somehow.

Anyway, through the fog door, down a crazy long spiral stair which leads into black. Is this the Abyss? I equip Artorias' ring just in case. Fall down a crazy long way and yep, the Abyss. Also, haven't been at a bonfire since Firelink.

Oh shit, suddenly Four Kings! Though there's only one. But he has his own health bar, AND I'm doing damage to the boss health bar...... Nearly kill the first one, and get hammered behind from the second one that randomly showed up. Long story short, I killed the third one before the fourth showed up, was able to heal, and killed the fourth. Thank the good lord a bonfire showed up afterwards.

Got the lord soul. Was gonna give the fire keeper soul to the fire keeper, she said some things, and suddenly the Firelink shrine is kindled to 20 ESTUS FLASKS!! Thank the lord.

Despite being somewhat of a mediocre boss, Seath has possibly the hardest tail cut of the base game.

And that was Curse you were getting.
Yeah he wasnt super difficult. It was basically staying close to him to avoid the crystal spike breath, and then avoiding the tail stomps and smash. After I found out how to actually hurt him of course.
kevwaffles posted...
If you noticed a bunch of crystallized corpses that fall apart when you hit/roll into them near Seath (and anywhere there are basilisks), those are actually other players who got cursed.
Thats super interesting and definitely makes sense.

As for where to next, Ive chosen New Londo Ruins. Time to go explore!

I mean it's all relative to where you currently are in the game, but as much as it can suck at the time, in the long run it doesn't really have any lasting consequences.

Except in DS2 if you care about pvp, because lol Soul Memory.
Thats totally fair. I lost 16k just a little bit ago. These stupid invisible walkways in crystal cave ugh.

So I got to crystal cave, after killing a bunch of golems, and freeing the onion guys daughter from the golden golem. First walkways arent that bad, but then I hear things hitting the ground, and it seems snow is hitting invisible walkways? Needless to say, multiple deaths occurred while traversing this area. Also holy fuck moonlight butterflies everywhere! Seems Im able to stay far enough away from most of them, though aggroed one getting an item. Found a titanite slab though, a blue one I think. Best upgrading material?

Got to a bigger cave lower down where a bunch of those clams from ash lake are. Got a few twinkling titanite and a purging stone, which cures curse. Not fully sure what curse does tbh. Walked into a giant room which is an obvious boss area, and holy fuck Seath is back!

Kept trying to circle Seath and hit his tails, but though it showed me a damage number, he wasnt losing any hp. After a couple minutes of that, I saw that blue glowy stick thing in the back, and went to hack at it. Suddenly, the damage was sticking. My bleed (or curse?) meter almost filled a few times, and his tail slam and tail sweep hurt bad. Killed him just before I was gonna get tail slammed again!!

if there was a tail weapon though, I didnt get it :(

Thats two lord souls down. Though Id like to check out the initial room that had Seath in Dukes Archives, I also want outta here lol. From my memory, of places I havent been yet, its either Demon Ruins, New Londo Ruins, or Valley of the Drakes.

edit: I was also out of estus at the end, so I was very dead if that tail slam had hit.

Sounds like losing 15k souls isn't too terrible then lol.

Ran around the Duke's archives, killing a bazillion crystal hollows. Those archers and channelers are absolute assholes too. Those octopus-headed snake things that came out when the alarm went off after I got out of jail were terrifying. Died the first time, but then went through the whole area slowly. Finally found another bonfire on a balcony, as well as a secret staircase leading to a fog gate. That led me outside where a bunch of crystal golems were, as well as a golden one. Stopped there last night, and will continue with that today!

I found Duke's Archive to be a really fun area personally. I generally liked fighting the humanoid enemies.

armored pigs i never figured out but thankfully they don't respawn so i didn't have to (if they had i'm sure i would have been forced to learn them but since they didn't they were always terrifying)
Yeah, I basically just stayed at its side, took a swing, and pivoted with it. Couldn't stay behind it as it would back kick me. Seemed to work, just had to be patient.

Here's a question for people who have played this to completion: What is the most amount of souls you lost at one time? By that, I mean you died, and then died again before you could get to your lost souls. I think mine was either 14 or 15k, in Darkroot Garden. Got surrounded by like, 6 of those stupid tree things (the powered up ones, up the ladder from the Hydra area), and beat down fast.

It was a terrifying area, to be sure. Catacombs and Tomb of the Giants were a slog to get through too, soooo many goddamn skeletons, giant skeletons, and weird skeleton dog beast things.

Though these crystal soldiers and such aren't exactly easy, because holy fuck do they hit hard. Makes sense, since they're wielding crystal weapons, but damn. Will play more when I get home and try and get out of jail.

Also, trying to figure out how many lord souls there are. Nito, Seath, and the Witch of Izalith I assume. That Pygmy thing also, that was talked about in the opening video? I don't think the witch's daughters are, as I already killed Quelaag and she didn't have a lord soul.

Went back to where the metal boar was, and managed to kill it. Killed the second one too, and found a bonfire. Also found a shit ton of crystal soldiers and archers. Apparently this place is called Duke's Archives. Wandered around a bit and ran right into Seath the Scaleless. Who proceeded to murder me in about 10 seconds.

Now I'm at a bonfire in jail.

Since I've kinda turned this into a playthrough topic, might as well keep it going!

Decided to keep going past Pinwheel. Entered the Tomb of the Giants, which was incredibly dark. Used the skull lantern in my left hand so I wouldn't plunge to my death, though I managed to do that anyway a couple times. The giant skeletons weren't that bad when they were alone at least. Found a guy holding a spear but not attacking, though I decided to check the ladder first. Yay bonfire! Went back up, walked around him gingerly, and apparently triggered a cutscene looking out over a ledge. And the dickhead pushed me off of it. I mean, I was able to get some items, which was nice. Talked to some other NPC, killed her friends who had gone hollow, and she was happy. Got back up and the dickhead guy apologized and such.

Kept going, more skeletons, including skeleton dog beast things. Those things suck because they're fast as hell with their attacks, and I'm wielding a slower weapon. Died a couple times learning their attacks and such. Lotta wandering happened, got the large divine ember, then finally got outside. Got invaded by some NPC, killed him, killed some weird skeleton trees, and then found a giant room with smaller Pinwheels. Shot a few, then maneuvered around, and find tiny baby skeletons..............that build up my toxic meter incredibly fast. I don't have anything that can remove toxic. And they succeeded in toxifying me. Killed more Pinwheels and found the fog door with a bunch of death and branches around it. Dropped into a pit and holy fuck it's Gravelord Nito.

It makes sense, with all the skeletons and such in these last couple areas, that this is where Nito would be. I deployed my Pinwheel strategy of running right at him. A couple things went differently though. First, he had henchmen, and as I got closer, he had giant skeletons with him too. Second, he did some scream thing, and a red spear basically hits me from the ground. Third, I died incredibly shortly after getting to him and taking a swing, so not the greatest strategy. Though as I died, he was doing some AOE explosion thing that murdered all his skeletons too.

Second time (after dying a few times trying to get back), while not being toxified this time, I killed the smaller skeletons and let Nito come to me. Still got hit by a couple of the ground spears, but he did his AOE thing which killed the other skeletons (or I think it did, I never saw the big ones this time). Then I just sidled around him when he swung, and hit him when I could, rolling back whenever he started glowing.

Got my first Lord soul!

Guess it's back to Firelink to place it in the Lordvessel I think. Then to figure out where to go from there.

Yeah Pinwheel is a joke of a boss. Part of it is that I think they wanted to make Pinwheel viable to fight at the beginning of the game despite Catacombs itself being much harder. He does have attacks that do enough damage to kill you at this point, though. He just kind of doesn't get around to using them most of the time.

There is a bonfire just past Pinwheel that is warpable.
Ahh that makes sense. Yeah I saw him casting, and I ran in and started swinging so he couldnt keep duping himself and throwing magic around. Hit me once, but he was dead so fast. I homeward boned, so Ill likely have to get back there then. I dont think those guys with lanterns came back though.

Went to the gold fog door first, met an armoured boar who was much stronger than the one in the burg. Killed me a few times, then I tried running by it.........and found a second one.

Decided to go to the catacombs instead. Turned the uchigatana into a divine weapon, so I have that as a quick skeleton killer, and the black knight sword as my main still. Killed 71994726 skeletons and got lost a bunch. Found both bonfires, killed the black knight, found the blacksmith, and almost got murdered by those stupid wheel skeletons. Ended up finding Pinwheel by accident, as I know theres still a fog door I havent gone through yet and man was he easy. I guess he just doesnt have a lot of health? Unsure. Got the rite of kindling.

Unsure where to go now. There seemed to be glowing lights past pinwheels room, which I assume leads to a new area? And can I warp back to one of the catacombs bonfires if I leave?

I'm not sure why you know about that, but since you know that much I'll clarify that only Divine does what you're looking for in that respect.

I also wouldn't make your main weapon Divine or Magic if your build isn't really focused around that. You can always use a second weapon for that purpose.
I took a trip down there a while back by accident, and they kept getting back up. I assumed that was either because something in there is raising them somehow, or I need a special weapon of some sort to keep them down. Divine seems more likely. It was mainly a hunch, though I thought it a good probability of being true

Im thinking of turning the claymore into a magic or divine weapon, for special purposes (mainly those respawning skeletons in the catacombs, as I have to go there eventually). Then I still have the black knight sword to get me through things, or the uchigatana if quicker slashes are needed. Out doing errands, will play in a couple hours. As basically everyone knows at this point, Dark Souls is awesome and it's great you are finally having the traditional Dark Souls experience! It really is great. What weapon are you using?

Re DS2: I don't think the guys in charge of Dark Souls 2 quite understood what was so satisfying about Dark Souls difficulty. A lot of areas make things more difficult by just... adding more opponents. Figuring out a dudes patterns and how to exploit the weak spots in their movements is fun. Having three guys repeating the same moveset on top of eachother so you have to wait for all three of them to line up moments of opportunity for you to make a move just becomes tedious
Right now Im using the black knight sword (+5 I think, though Id have to go look). Have the claymore upgraded to +10 also.

Got through the Great Hollow, pretty sure I got almost all the items, but those damn crystal lizards disappear before I can get to them. Killed two though.

Entered the Ash Lake, and of course another fucking hydra is here. Got rid of him a bit easier, as there was no crystal golems to fight while getting water cannoned. Also, these weird clam monsters can drop twinkling titanite?! Damn! Ended up falling off the ledge of a branch and stopped for the day as I didnt have much time, so next time Ill retrieve my souls and keep exploring. Also found at least like, 3 or 4 dragon scales

Yeah. It's in the DLC actually which you may want to look up how to access at some point because it's fairly obscure for having so much great content behind it. Technically speaking you just reached the point where you could access it if you wanted (you need the Lordvessel at a minimum) but it's the kind of thing you can decide to take on when you feel up to it.

The steps to get there off-the-top of my head (so if I screwed up somewhere either someone can correct me or again just look it up):

0. Place the Lordvessel at Firelink Shrine. ...I think. What you need is for those golden barriers to come down. I forget if that happens when you obtain the Lordvessel or when you place it. If you saw a cutscene of barriers disappearing various places around the world you're good.

1. Head to Darkroot Basin. If you didn't end up there at one point during your trip to Darkroot Garden it's accessible near the entrance to the Garden there's a path that leads down that you pass by like one enemy in (or maybe even before the first tree guy.) It's a small area that contains a big lake. Clear out the enemies there and your goal is to head to a cave in the way back. Hug the cliff/wall where the waterfall is and head back there because most of the lake is a killzone if you walk too far into it. You should find a gold golem there. Kill it and an NPC should show up. Talk to her (might have to exhaust dialogue but I forget.)

2. Head over to the Duke's Archives. This is early in Anor Londo, you probably saw it on your first visit. From where you get dropped off just cross the area (or warp to the first bonfire and take a... left, I think it is) instead of descending into Anor Londo proper. If you explored here earlier you would have seen a golden fog barrier blocking your path. It should be gone now. Clear a few enemies out and very early on you'll meet another conspicuous golem as you first enter the area right after an elevator. If you talked to the NPC before and kill the golem it'll drop an item. This is your ticket to the DLC areas.

3. Head back to Darkroot Basin where you fought that gold golem and now there should be something different there. Approach it and you're good.
Will definitely take a look at that later!

So after a couple trial runs of Dark Souls a few years ago, first stopping somewhere in the Undead Burg, and later stopping again on the road to Blighttown, I'm finally going through the game properly and am determined to beat it.

There have been a few epic moments in my run so far. Getting murdered by Quelaag even with the NPC helping, then beating her solo as a hollow. Killing the Iron Golem right before he was about to murder me as I had barely any health when I started to swing. Getting lost in Darkroot Garden and ending up finding and fighting Sif by accident (watching him loom over me initially was fucking awesome). But nothing beats what happened earlier this evening.

I was painfully making my way through Anor Londo. Clearing out rooms, finding a few shortcuts, getting in fights with 100 silver knights. I knew there was a boss here eventually, as there normally is in an area such as this. Finally opened up everything, ran up into the cathedral, avoided the big sentinel knight guy, and went through the fog gate. Cinematic was pretty cool, as most of them are, showing the ginormous guy with a hammer, and then what looked like a dragoon jumping down to join him. 2 on 1, wonderful. But just before the battle started, I saw the names.

Ornstein and Smough.

I'm no crazy Souls veteran, at least not yet, but I had heard the names of these two, and knew that the fight against them was basically the epitome of Dark Souls itself.

......I died in 12 seconds lol.

Later, I killed Ornstein, and was about to turn my attention to Smough when I got a cinematic of him crushing Ornstein's skull to somehow get crazy lightning power. I was shortly obliterated by his AOE lightning butt stomp. Couple tries later, I had him down to two hits left, hit him once, but he had jumped into his butt swing before I could land the second swing. I died, and was sooooo enraged.

On try number 7 or 8, I played ring around the rosie with Thor.........I mean Smough, so his shovel attack would get stopped, as I always had a stupidly hard time dodging it. Got my hits in where I could, and stalked around him as he stalked around me. Then I finally killed him. I don't remember the last time I felt THAT good after killing a video game boss, but man was it satisfying. Oh, and now I can warp between bonfires!

That got more lengthy than I thought it would. tldr: Ornstein and Smough was an absolutely awesome fight, with epic music. Never really felt unfair, just had to know their tactics, and adapt throughout the fight. Heart is still beating relatively quickly, and now I'm listening to their theme while I browse, just for the sheer epicness of it!

Shadow of mordor or spiderman are probably the two that are the most fun to actually control and play
Definitely good to know! Dark souls 2 and Spider-Man leading the way right now

Spider-Man, kingdom hearts and DS2 so far.

Just killed the Moonlight Butterfly, which was an interesting fight.

What should be next?

As stated above. Played through some of Dark Souls a while back, and now have gotten back into it. Rang the first bell (fuck those gargoyles), and am in the process of trying to go for the second one. So yes, I know it's a little while away (and I may use this topic as an update topic of sorts), but I have some more time to play, so I'm hoping to hammer it out.

So yeah, let me know what you think!

That is a truly inspiring story to read. I lurk on here all the time, posting sparsely, so I have seen a bunch of your topics over the years (Dr Doom is still a hilarious favourite). I'm really happy to hear that you have come through all that you have come through stronger, with a wonderful partner by your side, and that even your business is going quite well. Kudos to you!

If you are still getting DQ XI games for people, I would love one on the PS4, but if I missed that boat, that's entirely cool. Keep on kicking ass!

Just found the topic. Glad to be back! Did a mediocre job during the 3 seasons I coached the Bears, now going to try and bring the Colts up. Thanks for the stats PM, KCF, will look at that later tonight and then the spreadsheet to see what I want to do moving forward.
