My old company had a room that wasn't convenient enough to add cubes or an office in, so they just threw a few dozen machines in there and dubbed it a "server room". Add some window air conditioning units and you have a server room for only a few thousand dollars, and the upkeep is way cheaper then you would get from AWS.

I'm an on-prem advocate but you can't just throw out "a few thousand dollars" and pretend that's the entirety of the TCO. Just skills alone you're going to need storage/backup specialists, vendor management responsibilities, hardware maintenance, monitoring, the list is long.

I run a synology NAS with Plex and about a billion other services.

If you're a pro or a noob get a Synology NAS, they're best in market imo. Extremely easy to setup but also pretty powerful. Only other alternative is to build something like TrueNAS but imo that's only if you're an enthusiast and you like building stuff as a hobby.

For setting up Plex they have an in-built application with a single button setup, the only addendum is that to update it you need to go through the Plex website, download a file then upload it to your synology.

For purchasing, just get any with the amount of bays you think is appropriate. I think most CPU/RAM configurations are going to be able to run Plex easy.

Long answer short: Synology. I have DS918+

Can't diagree it's a recent development. I'm still surprised though it hasn't caught on everywhere. I'm pretty sure more than one person would look down on you for choosing a natural diamond over a synthetic one here, knowing where they can come from.

Getting the lab report/certificate is so much nicer.

Long term games may get backed up to the NAS with spinning disks, but becoming less and less required due to Steam. I do keep copies of my favourite Gog games and it's been a habit to buy first from Gog where possible.

On my PC, currently played games will get tiered onto my primary M2 and older or less frequently played games will get moved onto SSD.

For a laptop for sure you'll need an external drive or upgrade your current drive. I'd prefer the latter.

CRPG manuals, like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and such (including the cloth maps for 1 and 2), the Oblivion lore book iirc and the Septim coin. Stuff from that era, from BG1 on-wards probably.

I got a crate full of PC game manuals and supplements (copy protection, cloth maps). It's old and useless and smells funny but I can't bring myself to throw it away.

If someone else threw this crate away 10 years ago I probably wouldn't have noticed.

I did play through it, but I did not play through blind.

Even then I still got stuck at a certain point and had to look up a walkthrough, so I'd suggest if you do get stuck don't be afraid to try and find a non-spoiler walkthrough.

All-in-all, the mod was still a fun experience.

I've never had depression or anxiety so feel welcome to disregard my advice but I know simply doing my old hobbies doesn't bring me much fulfillment (and therefore happiness/satisfaction). I gotta be intentional about it.

I think you should try it. Put some dedicated time aside, browse through some music, read some reviews/articles on your computer/phone then take it to another room and just listen through it. Might help your creative side too if being an artist is still something you want to pursue.

I'm not saying you do this, but I think a lot of us put on Youtube, anime, video games and music just to distract us from thinking too much rather than something to actually enjoy. I know sometimes I definitely do this.
