Try to use the word of the day in a sentence.

Today's word is sarcasm.
As defined by Merriam-Webster:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sarcasm

What is the Origin of sarcasm?

If you've ever been hurt by a remark full of cutting sarcasm, you have some insight into the origins of the word. "Sarcasm" can be traced back to the Greek verb sarkazein, which initially meant "to tear flesh like a dog." "Sarkazein" eventually developed extended senses of "to bite one's lips in rage," "to gnash one's teeth," and eventually "to sneer." "Sarkazein" led to the Greek noun sarkasmos, ("a sneering or hurtful remark"), iterations of which passed through French and Late Latin before arriving in English as "sarcasm" in the mid-16th century. Even today sarcasm is often described as sharp, cutting, or wounding, reminiscent of the original meaning of the Greek verb.

Today's word is boonies.
As defined by Merriam-Webster:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/boonies

Of interest:

Boondocks and boondoggles

Boon ( a timely benefit; a favor) is a fairly old English word, dating back to the 12th century. In light of this one might be excused for thinking that words such as boondocks ("a rural area") and boondoggle (a wasteful or impractical project or activity often involving graft) are of similar vintage. However, not only are both of these words much newer than boon, they are not related to it (or to each other), except by a coincidence of spelling. Boondoggle is believed to have been coined in the 1920s by the American scoutmaster Robert H. Link as a name for the braided leather cords that are made and worn by Boy Scouts; it took on the wasteful project meaning sometime after. Boondocks is also a word from the early 20th century: it comes from the Tagalog word for a mountain, and was brought to English by the U.S. military forces who had occupied the Philippines at the beginning of the 20th century.

One definition of the French word tiquette is "ticket" or "label attached to something for identification." In 16th-century Spain, the French word was borrowed (and altered to "etiqueta") to refer to the written protocols describing orders of precedence and behavior demanded of those who appeared in court. Eventually, "etiqueta" came to be applied to the court ceremonies themselves as well as the documents which outlined the requirements for them. Interestingly, this then led to French speakers of the time attributing the second sense of "proper behavior" to their "tiquette," and in the middle of the 18th century English speakers finally adopted both the word and the second meaning from the French.

Quincunx was used by Shotgunnova in one of the previous CE Word of the day topics.

My only criteria is that I find the word on CE, to make it topical for the board. I often choose a word that appears in more than one topic title, but I may choose a word that was used in one of the topics on CE. To be honest I chose quincunx as the word of the day because I found most of the topics that day too boring to read.

Try to use the word of the day in a sentence.

Today's word is euphemism.
As defined by Merriam-Webster:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/euphemism

Euphemism derives from a Greek word that means "auspicious" or "sounding good."

How and Why We Use euphemisms
Euphemisms can take different forms, but they all involve substituting a word or phrase considered to be less offensive than another. The substituted word might, for example, be viewed as a less coarse choice, as when dang or darn is used instead of damn or damned. Or it might replace a word viewed as insulting to a religious figure, such as the various euphemisms for God (gad, gadzooks, gosh) or Jesus (gee, jeepers, jeez). A euphemism may also consist of an indirect softening phrase that is substituted for the straightforward naming of something unpalatable. Thus, we hear of people being let go rather than fired; civilians killed in war described as collateral damage; or someone who has died having kicked the bucket, passed away, given up the ghost, or joined ones ancestors.

Have you had your euphemism today?

The coin's name comes from the Latin roots quinque, meaning "five," and uncia, meaning "one twelfth." The ancients used a pattern of five dots arranged like the pips on a die as a symbol for the coin, and English speakers applied the word to arrangements similar to that distinctive five-dot mark.

For one thing, sympathy is considerably older that empathy, having existed in our language for several hundred years before its cousin was introduced, and its greater age is reflected in a wider breadth of meaning. Sympathy may refer to "feelings of loyalty" or "unity or harmony in action or effect," meanings not shared by empathy. In the contexts where the two words do overlap, sympathy implies sharing (or having the capacity to share) the feelings of another, while empathy tends to be used to mean imagining, or having the capacity to imagine, feelings that one does not actually have.

I want to post more, so I have decided to scan CE to find an interesting word of the day.
In this topic try to use the chosen word of the day in a sentence.

Today's word is archetype:
As defined by Merriam-Webster -
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/archetype

Of Interest:
Archetype derives via Latin from the Greek adjective archetypos ("archetypal"), formed from the verb "archein" ("to begin" or "to rule") and the noun "typos" ("type"). ("Archein" also gave us the prefix arch-, meaning "principal" or "extreme" and used to form such words as "archenemy," "archduke," and "archconservative.") "Archetype" has specific uses in the fields of philosophy and psychology. The ancient Greek philosopher Plato, for example, believed that all things have ideal forms (aka archetypes) of which real things are merely shadows or copies. And in the psychology of C. G. Jung, "archetype" refers to an inherited idea or mode of thought that is present in the unconscious of the individual. In everyday prose, however, "archetype" is most commonly used to mean "a perfect example of something."

Today's word is exclusive:
As defined by Merriam-Webster -
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/exclusive

Of interest
In words such as expel, export, and exclusive, the prefix ex- means "out of, outside". Thus, to exclude means basically to close the door in order to keep someone or something out. When the word appears in an advertisement, it's often making an appeal to snobs. An "exclusive" offer is supposedly made to only a few people; not so many years ago, "exclusive" housing developments excluded those of a certain race or color. If a product is being sold exclusively by one store, you won't be able to find it anywhere else. When a newspaper or news show has an exclusive, it's a story that no one else has yet reported. Exclusive's antonym is inclusive; an inclusive policy, an inclusive church, or an inclusive approach is one that aims to include as many people as possible.

Today's word is character:
As defined by Merriam-Webster -
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/character

Of interest:

Traits of character

Character demonstrates that a word may have many and varied meanings and yet still be easily understood by most listeners when used in disparate settings. We have little trouble distinguishing the meanings of the noun in she had a fine and noble character, Bill is always joking; hes such a character, and He was the last character to appear in the play, not to mention its many other applications. Character comes ultimately from the Greek charaktr (mark, distinctive quality), which passed through Latin and French before landing in English. The Greek noun itself is derived from the verb charassein, meaning to sharpen, cut in furrows, or engrave. The literal sense of the noun (an engraved or imprinted mark) existed in Greek, Latin, and French side by side with the figurative one (a distinctive quality), and both senses were borrowed into English early on, with a variant of the figurative sense appearing first.

Hidden motives and eccentric characters abound on this board.
