MM was getting leeched by the Pokemon games as well, so its percentage being low is not so much the problem to me as G/S/C getting so close to it when it should have been getting SFFd hard by RBY. I really can't explain it.

I did laugh reading about this elsewhere and saw someone describe it as "John Waters come to life!"

We're going to look back on social media decades from now the same way we look at smoking currently. We'll be shocked that everyone used so much of it ("We let children use it?" "Really?"), and everyone of a certain age will have a "quitting" story about how they stopped using it.

You joke, but these comments made me wonder what the most sexually explicit Best Picture Winner is, and The English Patient is probably Top 2/3 if not Number 1. I haven't seen it, but Best Picture winners are pretty light on sexual content when I think about it. It is one of the racier ones.

This might be a dumb question, but wouldn't it have been possible for people (by which I mean professionals/organizations, not a lay person) to partially watch the moon landing with a telescope? Do none of the deniers realize that this was obviously being done by all interested parties? I mean, I know that I'm talking about people with no critical thinking skills, so the answer is "Of course they haven't thought about this." But even so.

Nice to see the three names I predicted ahead of time were all on the poll.

My serious answer though is archiving the message boards in '08, and to an extent the proliferation of stickies on game boards. Both were obviously efficient ideas, but at the same time very anti-social.

They were meant to stop people from asking the same handful of questions over and over again, but it turned out that asking those handful of questions was the principal driver of people making accounts, and then joining the community. If you don't need to make an account to find what you're looking for, most people won't. Shutting down 90% of the conversation on a given game board didn't cause people to come up with new topics of conversation; it just meant that 90% of the conversation was gone.

I am not misremembering. The vote totals sucked for the Xenogears match because of a poll glitch where only registered users were able to vote, so the poll was restarted to very lukewarm numbers.

IIRC, you're both right. The new site design kicked in before Xenogears/Pokemon, but they were doing construction on things during the whole contest, so the regular design went back up temporarily for the first two matches of the 128 Bit Division.

Having never played Xenosaga it took me a while to realize that KOS-MOS = Cosmos. I was pronouncing it like it rhymed with "moss."

I think the key election is 1932 (and 34) really. The Republicans getting wiped out reduced them to a calcified conservative core, which has controlled the party ever since. You have to keep the Progressive wing with the Republican party, and I'm honestly not sure if that's possible. Having an open contest for the GOP nomination in '32 somehow (maybe Coolidge runs again in '28), meaning the big business interests in the party have to compromise would be a good start. If you butterfly away FDR somehow, there's a decent chance Democrats nominate someone really objectionable to Progressive Republicans too.

Voted 2000, but Clinton over Obama in 2008 if that's an option. A lot of downstream effects from that possibly.

I think the problem with the movie's prospects is that I have to actually ask the question: Did they ever confirm that he didn't kill that mother/daughter that was staying on his property?

I mean, I'm serious. Did the two of them ever turn up? I don't recall how that turned out.

A nitpick/paradox question though. How was the Indian police captain's averted death "Canon" if it would have been caused by The Spot? He obviously wasn't planned to be there, let alone even exist.

I guess the counter would be that the captain was always "fated" to die at that time, and if The Spot didn't show up something else would instead, but like, if the timeline is that flexible can't it just give the captain a heart attack?

Very excited for it. Hoping I can manage to see it in theaters. I wonder which stream service it would hit first if I fail to catch it in theaters though. Also wouldnt be surprised if come audience score time it gets bombarded somewhat by the usual triggered snowflake crowd

I think the original is on Netflix (or was at some point), so that would probably be it.

It's interesting that there haven't been more Zelda-likes/clones over the years. Obviously there's exceptions like Okami, but it's curious that serious alternatives have only seemed to come about sporadically.

Some streamers I watch did a playthrough recently of the N-Gage software library, and they came away pleasantly surprised. Obviously playing it on an emulator removes a lot of issues, but for a handheld system in 2003, the games were pretty technically impressive.

According to Billboard ~10 years ago this was the most successful single to never hit #1 or #2 (It peaked at #3). Not sure if it's been passed since then.

I didn't watch much TV then, and unless the writers' strike affects Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy then I don't care about now. Although, we did get Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog out of the last one... hmm...

Both of those both employ writing staffs, so they will be effected, although I think they have a lot of episodes pre-written so it may take a while.

The strike effects films too, it's just that there's a longer turnaround between production and release for film so timeframes can be massaged a bit more.

Depending how long this lasts, we'll miss out on another Ariana DeBose number at the Tonys this June.
