We don't have a democracy. I do t mean that in the pedant dumbass "we're a republic not a democracy way;" I mean that we exert very little democratic control over the institutions that govern our lives.

the fact that voting is a thing is what a democracy is all about already. Just the presence of elections.
Democracy honestly, though, is just another word for 'majority wins'...even if this majority is 51% or the majority happens to be representatives of the majority. And that's when the problem sets in

what's the quality of life for the average Chinese person? compare that to the average American person. Which do you think is better?

China no doubt, has a burgeoning income gap but all developed countries face this. But if we look say, 50 years into the future, I honestly think China would be much much better off. The government always acts in the idea of collectivism, as compared to Western values of Individualism. And this overall benefits most people in the end as the economy progresses.

Oh, I'm sorry, are Taiwan and South Korea(which had its first case literally the same day as ours) not applicable?

Both have great political systems as well. Taiwan however, just happens to be a s***t state by a bullying China. South Korea is doing mostly fine as well.

there needs to be a balance for both.

Captialism needs abit of socialism injected in it.

Democracy needs abit of totalitarianism injected in it.

The problem is the US is at the extremes of BOTH capitalism and democracy.

I posted another topic here

I wonder when Americans will wake up... Maybe once China finally overtakes the US and the US becomes so deep in recession they go to s****

And personally ,I'd say the best political system ever in the world is that of Singapore's or those Scandinavian countries.

look at China in comparison. Complete political stability. So what if the governmnet is somewhat of a tyranny, doesnt hold elections and brainwashes the people in a certain direction? Look what the greater goods they are in accomplishing...

  1. Greater nationalism in China than ever before. So much so even Chinese nationals overseas dare boast about their country.
  2. Complete efficiency in passing laws with the politburo having full control. No stupid bickering over issues that cost precious time and resources.
  3. No BS distractions or lobbying or trying to run populist election campagins to appeal to the majority of people (most of whom tend to be politically ignorant (and especially so if you take into account all the farmers, illiterates and just plain uneducated).
  4. Most importantly, POLITCAL STABILITY. PEACE. ECONOMIC PROGRESS. WEALTH. The government can focus on running the country and only top elites that are the smartest and capable can be a part of the government. Not dumbcracks elected by dumbcracks.

The only problem with a totalitarian state is of course, corruption and censorship. But it can also be mitigated through other ways. Singapore, for example, (not as totalitarian like China) mitigates by super high salaries for the ministers and maintaining their technocracy through meritocracy.

Honestly, looking at the USA, with a political system dictated by too much concerns over the disenfranchised, majority and opposing views...and most of all, 'MUH FREEDOM!!'

individualism presides as a priority. It'll also lead to disillusionment, ironically selfishness and eventual downfall.

And yes, it's kinda eventual the US WILL collapse. I say this out of both retrospect and a prospective view. Go look back in history. The only reason the USA remains a top powerful country today is due to their victory in WW2, and lack of destruction and resource depletion in the past centuries. That's how the country racked up so much military firepower, an economic boom and rose to the international stage.

During this time in history, Asia was mostly colonised by the West and didn't have the chance to modernise as much. Now's different.

It's only a matter of time Asia will rise and overtake the West. Anyway enough ranting. Just my thoughts. I'd rather be governed by an elite group of people who knows best for the country than a bunch of incapable leaders elected by an incapable majority.

China already banned wildlife trade. But the trade can still continue underground. Truth is, there's almost no guarantee another epidemic may happen. But the chances are rather low, seeing as to how it took more than a decade for Covi-19 to immerge after SARS in China

Absolutely, these guys single handedly took down the world economy and are responsible for the deaths of potentially millions of people not to mention the pain and suffering this is going to cause. I don't really know what an appropriate punishment is for this but justice needs to be served and these people have to answer for their actions.

China already paid for it through damage to their own economy. Isn't that punishment enough by natural means.

Also whatever happened to the world at large is also the fault of s***ty governments handling it. If you really want to pass blame, you should blame the one first person who got infected by drinking bat soup or whatever. But of course, we have absolutely no idea who that is.
And neither is it the guy's fault for not knowing he'd get a new unknown infection that would one day ravage the rest of the world

And I mean the chinese government. Like they need to ban wet market that sells exotic and illegal animal meat (not to mention unsanitary conditions), which may have likely caused the outbreak.

Should they be tried/charged by the U.N., and how?

dude, how can you try an entire country lmao

also it's not the CCP's fault. Even if they ban exotic meat trade, it'll end up going underground. You cant stop it. The trade is too ingrained in their culture alrdy

We don't know what the transmission rate or death rate will be. What we know is that we've probably failed to contain it and it's likely to become a pandemic. Could be more harmless than the flu, could be much worse. Too late now, we're rolling the dice.

don't we already know, based on how huge the stats are in China? It certainly can't be higher than the fatality rate posted there, since they're basing it off those who were admitted to hospitals, those who died there and those who were discharged.
Even a small baby can recover from the virus. If anything, young people are the least to be concerned about it

The flu kills hundreds of thousands of people each year. You would have to be stupid to not wish we could go back in time and prevent it from being a common virus. And coronavirus is likely deadlier than the flu, not to mention there won't be a vaccine for over a year. This topic is stupid.

hundreds of thousands out of millions of people. That's what happened for H1N1. That's a death rate of below 1%.
Cov19 has a death rate of about 1-3%, but we dont know if it's due to the virus itself or s***y healthcare. If you look at Singapore for instance, it had the 2nd highest infection rate, yet not a single death. Meanwhile Japan had a lower rate but deaths happened.

Regardless, if you were to be infected, chances are higher of you dying from a random car accident. And if you're NOT infected, you'd have a higher chance of an asteroid hitting you or some stranger pushing you onto the railway tracks or dying of cancer or a random stroke.

don't see what's so stupid about it.

governments are spending millions on dollars to fight a disease that has a lower fatality than our everyday fatalities in life. You should be worried about getting kidnapped, or mugged, or a random stray bullet hitting your head while you're strolling down a park.

the fatality rate seems rather low, almost like the H1N1 outbreak. If that's the case, what warrants so much concern so as to have travel bans, so heavy media coverage, closure of schools etc..?

I never understood the logic. Aren't people always getting hit by the occasional illnesses like chickenpox, fevers and flus anyway? Who cares if the Cov-19 spreads all the way? Won't it just become endemic and another one of your everyday illnesses?
TopicHave you ever known the HR department at a company to do ANYTHING?

ITT, people who dont know anything about HR.

HR encompasses not just handling stupid complaints or giving resignation letters. They encompass recruitment, training & development, compensation, performance evaluation, benefits, and all other employee admin stuff.
They're of utmost importance especially when firms are facing manpower issues such as a sudden retrenchment or departure of employees. Otherwise yeah, pretty common sense job and attractive to females for some reason (hmmmm). But idk companies also tend to be biased toward pretty females to put in HR. Ok, they're also useful in employee retention, which means coming up with benefits and hosting those dumb orientation games, company parties and whatnot.

. There's some more technical aspects like employee laws and recruitment, the latter is a thorn in the ass. You could say the defining aspect of HR is people skills, which also involves some random psychology (which is why some school courses offer HR and psychology together).
