I was gonna say either Jolly Roger or Dire Dire - and I usually like water levels but these are bad but are saved by the music.

So I'll go with Snowman's Land. Every star on that level sucks, except killing the ice bully is fine I guess.

#1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Sega Genesis, 1994)
This writeup is gonna be short and sweet and kind of suck, sorry.
This is my favorite game. I love it. Sonic games are fantastic. This one is the best one because it has:

The best music, the most variety in level design, the best level design, the most different and most cool power ups that change how the game is played, the most in terms of exploration (ie, low, middle, upper routes, plus combining that with flying with Tails for max exploration), on that note- being able to utilize Tails flying AT ALL, being able to play as Knuckles and get a completely different game experience with his wall climbing and gliding (something that was just kind of shoehorned-in in Knuckles in Sonic 2, and not explicitly designed around it like it was in Sonic 3+K), the most optional routes with different pathing and such, the best special stages- Blue sphere is incredible plus I like the other bonus stages the electric board, the gumball machine, and the slots bonus, the best and most creative bosses, and just all around feels the best.

Of course, thats just comparing it to other Sonic games but you know how I feel about those. They are platforming perfection. I know not everyone feels this way because theyre obsessed with BUT I CANT JUST GO AS FAST AS I CAN WILLY NILLY AND I HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO WORRY ABOUT OBSTACLES. And yeah. If thats really what you want, 2D Sonic isnt the game for you. Luckily, they have a whole 3D genre if youre into that. Again, 2D Genesis Sonic is not about speed. Its about MOMENTUM and how you can use that to your advantage. How you bounce off of enemies, handle slopes and loops, and knowing when to change speeds to your advantage- to get through the level, find secret areas, use the power ups, or beat the bosses.

The way the game progresses I always thought was really neat too in this game- how the levels link together was a really creative thing. Like Knuckles blowing up the bridge youre standing on so you fall from Angel Island to Hydrocity, or the Robotnik Airship in Launch base exploding and sending you off to Mushroom Hill. The Lava cooling from Lava Reef 1 to 2 Etc. Continuing from Sonic 3 and going right into Sonic & Knuckles seems so simple, yet it was an incredible gameplay decision, as it gives you a way to finally save your S&K progress, but also adds the SUPER EMERALDS, making extra hard and extra fun Blue Sphere levels to power up your emeralds so you can become HYPER SONIC- since if you got the first 7 in the first half of the game, you lose the ability to become super until you supercharge the emeralds. The level design has been somewhat altered too from vanilla S3K.

And finally. Lets talk more about the music. I dunno even what to say. This is by far one of the best OSTs in all of gaming, and its pretty clear Michael Jacksons influence was here and very much noted. The Act 2 songs all being remixes of Act 1 was something I loved too.

And yeah man. Thats pretty much it. I love everything about this game. It was one of my first ever. I still love everything about it and try to play it once a year if I can. Been worse at that lately though.

Also the 2-player mode has those extra unique stages with the cool music too. Endless Mind is sort of City Escape. Boom. Oh, and Ill also close by saying that any game that can make a water level incredible and its games best stage (and one of the best water levels in all of gaming)- thats impressive.

NO WAY? NO WAY? NO WAY! NO WAY? NO WAY! NO WAY? NO WAY? NO WAY! NO WAY? NO WAY!

Also yes the runner on 2nd in extras rule is still garbage and Manfred is a moron for thinking this is going to attract new people. All this does is pass off most current fans. But I've long since stopped thinking he is doing anything out of best interest for the game.

And I know some Yankees fans are probably just saying it cuz its probably the direct reason you lost yesterday but regardless those people are right in the end anyway so I'll allow it lol

Fuck the fucking nationals. Fucking relegate these assholes. And of course because some dumbass anti vaxxer nats had to go and get covid, they fuck up our schedule completely, we lose off days, and now the Braves get to face the Nats AAA team for 3 easy wins while we just get fucked over. Shit sucks man. Following fucking protocols. The nats are scumbags.

....... anyway hell yeah I'm head over heels in love with extending Lindor. On my birthday too! What a great gift! Too bad its now marred by losing opening day due to nats scumbaggery.

My general though on the mets offseason is while they did a lot of great stuff, they didnt do a good job of addressing outfield defense and the bullpen is probably a push from last year (which is not good). But they should have one of the best offenses in the league and the behind degrom pitchers are solid (as opposed to abysmal last year). So I put them at 91 wins. Wild card team. Braves are really good and not being predicted high enough, I think they win 97, they are significantly better than us as it stands now. 3 free wins vs the nats doesn't help.. Anything can happen though sure!

#2. Super Smash Bros. Melee (Gamecube, 2001)
This game is outdated these days, but it holds so much meaning to me for pretty much all of my high school and college life. And yknow so are Guitar Hero 2 and Rock Band 2 but those definitely need to make my list. But I would still play this game with people these days, and I will still love it. It still feels amazing. I think it nailed the game feel much more than the other entries in the series.

For a casual player, the balance felt great. I loved playing pretty much any character. They hadnt yet gone overboard with the items. It had a really good selection of stages without getting overwhelmed. There was a ton of other fun stuff to do-The event modes remain some of my favorite Smash related content. Adventure mode was easily the best campaign mode in the series by a longshot. Id love to see a more fleshed version of that (3DSs was close). It also remains the only game to have my favorite stage in the series (RIP). Home Run Derby is a blast too of course. All the later games may have all these modes, but being the first counts here, this really was a home run for me.

High school was the thing. I probably have more hours logged into this game than any other game Ive played. My friends and I would play this all the time after school, and we each had it, so no matter whose house we were at, wed have everything we need. None of us were pros or anything, we all just loved this game to death. Coming off the N64 game, which I thought was a novel game, and pretty fun, but it wasnt one of my favorites ever, and definitely something I wouldve like to see taken to a fuller extend, and Melee just completely shattered those expectations. The jump from Smash 64 to Melee was absolutely mindblowing , and something no other Smash game can claim. Maybe any game? Just how much more polished, good-feeling, upgraded, fleshed out it takes the cake. Maybe others added more characters or stages or what have you, but to do it on this scale, to go from like 5 to 100 to me was so impressive, that it just hooked us all forever. Wed also eventually do stuff like mess around with the Tournament mode endlessly, try to beat each others Break the Target times, try to get all the in-game trophies (which were always fun to check out the easter eggs for), and set up 99 stock matches featuring 4 level 1 Pichus (or whatever), place bets, and let it run while we did something else, then come back and see who won.

And even into college, I wound up playing this so much. We didnt quite have Brawl yet, so there was still so much more of this, and of course, all my new friends at college were just as in love with this game as much as my high school friends were. And so, even more time was put in. Thus, all the hype for Brawl was so incredible, I loved that time. Even if the game didnt quite deliver fully (I mean it was still good!), I loved that hype around it so much- every day finding something new out about a new Smash game was so much fun.

Just everything about SSBM was so iconic and perfect, and is so memorable, I remember it all so fondly- thats why this game is here. It all triggers good times. And I mean, it has by far the best menu/main theme in the series too. Even though we liked to sometimes reset until we got that alternate music, that original theme is just the best. I still have the Nintendo Power disc of the Live Japanese Philharmonic of a selection of Smash songs sitting in my car, and I love listening to it still. The games intro cutscene still gets me hype like none other.

SUPER SMASH BROTHERS.MELAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Sonic Mania was just so...inventive

And that's a weird descriptor given how much of it is essentially rehashed content but the way it reimagined the levels was so clever man

I know! Like yeah, they reused a ton of assets, but they did it in such fantastic ways. Like I cannot stop thinking about stuff like the blue glowworm guys from Angel Island showing up in new Chemical Plant. Like of course they would, right! It makes sense! And reversing the Hydrocity boss. I mean I know I said a bunchof this in my review already but thats really what makes this game so impressive. How it borrows everything from all the best classics and while technically its a glorified fan game, it doesn't feel anything like that. Just a game made by people who clearly have that same love the fans of those games did.

#3. Sonic Mania (PS4, 2017)
Im not really sure how much I can talk about this game without talking about another game on my list (bet you cant guess) but Im sure going to try. You can certainly look right at the title screen and know what you're gonna get.

After so many years of the Sonic series putting out its new style of games, which really lost sight of what made the Genesis originals so great (and yeah I have SA2B high on my list and I love that game, but for different reasons and in different ways)- so giving it back to fans who know why those originals were great was the perfect decision, and it may just be a glorified fan game but theres no need for the word just glorifiedor fan here. This is the real Sonic 4. This went back to everything that made those original Sonics great. Theres so much to explore with multiple paths on each level. You have your bonus rings. You have a mixture of old levels and new levels, with remixes done well on the old ones. The music is incredib;e. Its just everything youd want out of a classic Sonic platformer, perfected for a newer era.

The entire game is also an homage and love letter to Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Manyof the enemies, obstacles, level features, etc are all here in this game, but thrown about in other areas. For me, its just really cool to see enemies mixed and matched in places that make sense. Like those glowworms from S3s Angel Island? Theyre here in Manias Chemical Plant instead and youre like hey that makes a lot of sense, where else would they be?. For Hydrocity, they have swappedthe Act 1 and Act 2 bosses, because why not? AND, in one of the cooler bosses in the game, you get to ride in the old Hydrocity Act 2 boss- now YOURE the one controlling Robotniks water suction machine, trying to suck him up (whoaf), while he bombs you. You play Mean Bean Machine against Robotnik. Or fight his weather changing machine (featuring those windy chickens from Mushroom Hill). It basically takes Sonic 3 and remixes it all over in such fascinating ways. The original levels they also add twists too. Again, in Chemical Plant, Act 1 plays pretty close to the original, but then Act 2 they add the gimmick of injecting ooze into the purple slime to make it change color and change its property (in this case, making it a gooey bouncy substance instead of water). The whole game is a new experience using a lot of new plus old assets in cool and different ways. Clearly a whole ton of care was put into this game by people who truly adore the Genesis Originals

I just want to list more random cool things I enjoy about this game, thats the rest of my writeup.
You can burn out those spike bridges in Green Hill if you have a fire shield (obviously not there originally). The new S3K blue sphere stages. The Sonic CD inspired bonus stages. That the Green Hill boss is a tiny version of Sonic 2s final boss. That the Chemical Plant 1 boss is a version of the Ice Cap 1/Metropolis boss (I could keep going with these moved around bosses), the bouncy goo I mentioned in Chem Plant 2. Studiopolis is awesome, so is the music (all the music is awesome though). Flying Battery 2 dealing with a lot more of the ship exterior (and including those electric death ball things from Wacky Workbench in Sonic CD). Spring Garden is a neat chill zone, including the Mushroom Hill dragonflies was a good touch here- or having an icey but grassy level in general was neat. Making sure to include Sonic CD in with the references, not just Sonic 1-3. Of course this means having the Stardust Speedway boss race vs Metal Sonic, which becomes a fight, very well done here. I mentioned Hydrocity already but what a fantastic level, with the boss swap in particular. Mirage Saloon has you fight Fang, Beat, and that other big hedgehog whose name I forget. Oil Ocean brings back those levers from Sandolpolis except in this case it clears out the ring-reducing smog from the level instead of killing the ghosts.

I just dont know how to gush enough about this game, but it just feels like every decision made was made specifically to tailor to people who love Sonic 3 & Knuckles especially, but still all the Genesis sonic games. If you like the Sonic Genesis games even slightly, and you havent played this yet, you absolutely owe it that much. Just a fantastically done platformer, and the real Sonic 4. I probably didnt do a good enough job talking about it, and thats probably from review fatigue mostly but. I love this game.

Next up: Well you probably know what my #1 game is, and you have the rest of my list. So no real hint here. I wonder if you can get my #2. The only hint I will give you is it is part of a series of another game on my list.

#4. Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade (GBA, 2003)
Fire Emblem is the perfect toilet game. Sitting on the toilet pooping is the best time to get your thinking on- and this game is that. Planning everything as carefully as you can- seeing where you can move, where the enemy will move based on where you move, where to set up, what units you should be bringing and what to equip them with, what you need to do to get every item on the level, whether or not you are opening doors with your own thief or baiting an enemy thief to do it, when to save the boss for last so you can kill all the other enemies finally figuring out the perfect strategy to do everything you want to do on the level- getting all the items and chests, killing all the enemies, doing the requirements for the upcoming side chapter, recruiting the difficult to reach recruit. And of course having it all be ruined by that damn 5% brigand critical. Your unit dies, and as any good Fire Emblem player, you go welp. Cant lose any units. Start over. And that is the essence of Fire Emblem. To achieve that perfection of doing everything and losing nothing. And it feels great.

And this game was my first experience with Fire Emblem. I got this game BECAUSE of Smash Bros, I was intrigued by Marth and Roy and was like hey, I want to play a game these guys are in, so I got Fire Emblem when it came out, of course not knowing that they werent in the game at all (until the scene at the end!), but Im still glad I did. The way this game makes you plan and come up with a best-odds strategy and actually pulling it off (and all while on the toilet) just was always excessively appealing. I love the level of micro and micromanagement it affords in all the stuff I mentioned above.

What also works really well in this game is the story. In a sense. The story is great, maybe not amazing, but its still great and works for what it is and has its emotional moments, but you find yourself getting very attached to these characters, who, despite there being a ton of them, all have their unique personalities and adds to the desire to want to restart any time you lose one to that good ol permadeath. But what really helps drive that point home is that YOU, the player, are directly involved with these events, as the games strategist. Youre not a main character or anything, but youre directly involved with all the main characters. You put in your name and Hector, Eliwood, Lyndis (who has become one of my favorite characters), and the rest all talk directly TO YOU, and its such a simple thing, but being a part of this story, and having the characters really talk right to and about you, show appreciation and emotion, its such a simple and seemingly minor thing, but its so extremely effective and the way Fire Emblem uses it is unlike any other game I am aware of and I think more RPGs (or whatever) should acknowledge the idea of this outside all-controlling source, making all the moves actually being a part of the story, not as an omnipotent god, but a simple strategist as part of your story to really make you feel with , care about, and identify with these characters and the story.

this image may have been slightly doctored, but rest assured its YOUR name that goes in there!

Next up: The ultimate love letter, for fans, by fans.

#5. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3, 2009)
After I got a PS3- which the primary spark for were the Ratchet & Clank PS3 games if I recall, I was told by the world to play this game. But sure enough, I played the first one first. I thought yeah- this is a pretty decent game. Its fun. Shooting seems pretty basic, stealth is basically nonexistent, story is like a fun movie, it looks great, its presented well. It was a good game, but definitely didnt seem like something omg Wigs you must play this game. But I saw no reason to not play the second one, I liked the first pretty ok.

And so, here was Uncharted 2. And its everything the first game did but done way way way better, to a nearly perfect degree, to be exactly the kind of game its supposed to be. The set pieces in this game are absolutely incredible, the opening in the snow wasteland of the Train graveyard (from flashback to reality), climbing a gigantic Phurba dagger, going through the Nepalese temple, the truck caravan (all these games have those Caravan scenes, and theyre always a spectacle), and of course, the unparalleled train ride sequence. To this day, that part gets me every time with just how cool it is to be barreling along while doing all your usual action game stuff. Speaking of climbing, it may just at the end of the day pointing your stick in hopefully the right direction and mashing X, but man does it look cool and somehow feel good anyway. The gunplay is solid as always as in these series, the characters are fun and easy to root for and Sully is always the best... you always follow the hose (also RIP Cameraman Jeff, true MVP), the story is exciting and nice and simple but effective and to me, the other thing these games, and UC2 in particular, do best are the presentation.

This is great- how much it really feels like youre playing a movie, the way it transitions between cutscenes and action segments is flawless, the fitting dialogue while youre doing these things, the way the game is framed and filmed (Im looking at you scenes where one character is hanging over a cliff with a chasm beneath them and needs the other character to pull them up, while the camera is over the shoulder pointed straight down)-its all incredibly cinematic and works extremely well. This is no longer really a novel thing and so many games do this now, but Uncharted 2 really to me felt like the first to really stick the landing with it and set the stage for this. And man, do all these not-necessarily-built looking characters have the upper body strength to not only endlessly climb and pull themselves up on crazy structures all day, but also pull each other up cliffs, all effortlessly come on, lets see all yall workout routines. Still, that opening, when Drake is climbing the train, and the camera swoops around to show you the scope of it all. It hits man. The music is also VASTLY underappreciated. There's a lot of really nice tracks and accompanying music, and that main theme is just iconic as fuck. It always gets me in the nostalgia.

But how can I not proceed here without talking about my lifeblood of this game, the multiplayer. I lived, breathed, ate, and sweat this multiplayer- and this is what a Shooter multiplayer should be. Third person, teams of 5 v 5, mix of game modes (Deathmatch, Plunder, King of the Hill, what have you), a wide variety of great maps (Train Wreck for life), and very little in the way of extraneous shit (just 2 booster slots- usually one dedicated to faster reload speed and the other dedicated to preventing other people from cheating Fuck Situational Awareness). I hope one day ND will bring this style of mp back, but as UC4 and TLOU have evidenced, were too far drowned in all kinds of complicated stuff in our multiplayer. Not to say those arent fun, cuz they are. But this is where the true classic was. Trying to get all of the multiplayer trophies was really fun too and a great motivator to keep you playing. Goddamn 10 Protectorates though took forever.

Loved playing with all you b8ers though. Dp, Bartz, MSG, Menji, Pacific, rammtay, icon, Poka, numbers, Not Dave, Lockes, Mershi, KCF... and YOU, yes you! (Sorry if I didn't mention you)
We had a thing going for a long time, and it was great. Long live Uncharted 2.

*pumps* *pumps* *pumps* *pumps* *pumps*

Next up: A game where YOU are a character, although not one of the main characters.
(Extra note: I don't think anyone anywhere has guessed this game as appearing on my list yet).

#6. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy (DS, 2005)
(Im using the US release date of the first game as the year here, sorry Naye).

Thank you Board 8 for recommending these games to me. To this day I find myself replaying them even though they offer basically zero replay value. Theres not too much I can say I think. But well try!

You know the scoop. Play as a rookie lawyer. Investigate some crime scenes. Gather clues. Talk to witnesses. Go into court and cross-examine witnesses and point out contradictions and find out what really happened and protect your client. All on rails, pretty much. And it all just works so well.

It has a fantastic cast of main characters, all of whom you see grow, who are endearing and want to root for, and are colorful and interesting. The cases are all fantastic, save a couple, and very well-told, and are well-written. The twists in each case are interesting, with an engaging story, noit just case to case, but as an overall arc, over each game, and over the first 3 games. Replaying this is like rereading a favorite book, its a great comfort zone thing that I try to do again every so often.

Our main driving cast across the 3 games of Phoenix, Maya, Edgeworth, and Gumshoe all bring unique things to the table and are all fantastic characters. Even if a number of the witnesses or criminals or defendants or whatever arent that great, it doesnt matter because the driving force of those 4, plus the Judge and rival prosecutor is more than enough to keep the game going. 1-4 remains my favorite case what with Larry at his best, Manfred von Karma, and pretty much each day and each court case is filled with great twists and plot. The moment you jokingly are suggested to cross-examine a parrot, only to actually do so and find von Karma had tampered with the parrot thats when I knew this game was legitimate. Maybe some of its memes havent aged well, but its forgivable (hello Sal Manella). Name puns still unrivaled though.

At some points, we have to suspend the air of believability, what with how big a part spirit mediums play over the course of the game. However, everything still follows logic and reason. You accept the fact that yes, spirit mediums exist, as part of this worlds reality and the story still holds itself in place. The stories remain compelling too. The game is presented extremely well too, including the music, and it remains one of my favorite to talk about all you fine people with, be it Case or Character rankings, motives, parts we like, parts we dont like, inconsistencies, and twists. And it remains a top suggestion for any people I know looking for a great story-based game to play. The second trilogy is also really good, though didnt really create the same magic of the original 3- Spirit of Justice is excellent and Dual Destinies is pretty good, and its definitely a series worth playing if you havent, especially if you have Dual Destinies already installed on your 3DS and havent got around to playing it yet.

And thats all I really have to say! zvarri lol

Case Rankings:
Elite:
1-4 > 2-4 > 3-5 > 3-4 > 1-5
Great:
2-2 > 3-1 > 3-3
OK:
3-2 > 1-3 > 1-2 > 1-1

Whatever:
2-3 > 2-1

#7. Final Fantasy X (PS2, 2001)
This game still holds up. The style no longer does, but somehow the game does anyway and I find that incredibly impressive. When I replayed it when FFX Remaster came out several years ago, I found myself still greatly enjoying (ALMOST) every part of it, and some of that sure, might be nostalgia, but a lot of it is not. The fact that this was the first RPG I ever played (besides the Pokemon games) not withstanding, as I never really played that style of game until I borrowed this one off of a friend because I saw him playing it and it looked cool.

Anyway, there is so much to like about this game. It looks absolutely beautiful for its time and the remasters look great too, even trying to de-render those famous PS2 renders. The music on the whole is great (not fantastic), but very memorable. There are some fantastic tracks like the dulcet tones of To Zanarkand, the THUMP THUMPing of Someday the Dream Will End, and my favorite track in the game- Seymour Omnis. Otherworld though. Man. The first time I heard this (well, second, at the end of the game. I dont think I processed it at the start of the game), I could not stop laughing. The temple themes are also memorable I think thats a good thing but Im not sure. The prerendered cutscenes though have always looked great- and that opening Blitzball game, plus the Yuna dancing scene (ok ok and that one scene on the lake), plus the whole Listen to my Story intro (not pre-rendered) are some of the most visually memorable gaming experiences Ive seen. Muscle memory though? Obviously however many times weve heard the spiel before the Seymour 3, and the Yunalesca fights. I think I might be able to do bits and pieces of those cutscenes still.

The story and characters very memorable. Enjoyable characters that most of us can still quote and enjoy to this day. Obviously looking back, a lot of them do wind up maybe a bit annoying, stereotyped, or what have you. But theres so much memorable stuff about all of them, its obviously had a lasting impact. Hah hah hah hah hah. All of the characters have a lot to like about them, even if Wakka is kind of a racist dick. The story is a goddamn mess and a lot of times I still have no idea whats going on, its sort of time travel but not really and Tidus may or may not exist, and theres so much stuff that makes no stuff, but again. Its endearing. I appreciate it. I like it.

The battle system is very compelling, I never really liked ATB systems all that much and prefer a more think it over/tactical style than just trying to get in as many attacks as possible quickly in a time limit in my RPGs. So being able to see the turn order and how its affected by using various moves was a huge selling point to me. Further, being able to freely swap characters in and out without wasting a turn adds to how you can strategize too, and allows the game to have its battles actually be more strategic and that is fun! Being able also to customize weapons was a great addition, and of course, the Sphere Grid is legendary, starting off developing your characters down specific paths, but then giving you the freedom to branch off as you please if you want to get a bit creative and have a tank Yuna or Black Mage Auron or what have you.

Then you have the side content, and this is where the game really shines. There is SO much to do and (ALMOST) all of it is so interesting, fun, and well-worthy of your time sink into these events. Trying to do all the stuff to get the ultimate weapons, all the side dungeons, the dark aeons (in the remaster), the Al Bhed primers/passwords, the endless content of capturing monsters for Monster Arena and fighting the side bosses, the Cactuar Village, travelling around pre-end game with the airship, even the annoying stuff like lightning dodging, Chocobo Racing, butterfly capturing I love all of it

..

But Im sorry. I just think Blitzball is the worst minigame ever. I dont hate it though. I like it in THEORY. I loved it as a kid. It ALMOST works. Its just so damn easy to break by hiding behind the net, and even if you dont do that, its just so incredibly easy besides that almost impossible to win first match, but hell, you know we all kept resetting until we won that won. That was at least a challenge. I feel like this game is SO CLOSE to being really good, it just becomes mind numblingly easy, especially once you recruit all the good FAs. You know the ones. Mostly the Al Bhed, like Eigaar and Nimrook.

Anyway. There is so much good and so much memorable about this game. It has a lot of flaws, but ultimately everything else endearing and memorable about this game stands out so much, its impossible for me not to love.

Next up: This is a game from a genre that has not shown up on my top 100 so far.

#9. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS, 2013)
A Link Between Worlds is the spiritual successor to A Link to the Past, and in a lot of ways, its really similar. Its a similar overworld, laid out in a similar way, with the same gameplay style, a lot of the same standard Zelda weapons (though it does have 2 neat new ones that make for good puzzle solving- the Tornado Rod which briefly lifts you in the air, and the Sand Rod which rises temporary pillars out of sand), and a lot of the same game feel- and of course this is all a good thing, as these things are all very good in LttP. I would probably have this game ranked just around the same as Link to the Past, which I have at 47, if it werent for two additional mechanics in this game that really elevate it for me.

The main mechanic in this game then being the ability for Link to turn into a drawing and move around on the wall, as the camera swings down to show this perspective. Its a fantastic gameplay element, that allows for a new dimension of getting around a game like LttP, and is used extensively, creatively, and a variety of different ways in both the overworld and within dungeons. In addition, this is the main way you travel between Hyrule and the Dark Wo-. Lorule.., okay and this is such an incredibly stupid pun, that I cant help but love it. But anyway, there are cracks in the walls which allow for this transition between worlds. I think this is the best mechanic in any Zelda game, its a little hard to explain why. It just feels very good, the transitions of how it works looks good, and its just fun!

The other great thing here is the item rental system. This is another fantastic mechanic that keeps all the general mechanics of Zelda games- that is, using different tools to solve puzzles, complete dungeons, and deal with enemies/bosses, and supplants an open-world idea to it. Shortly after leaving Links house, a man in a rabbit costume named Ravio, takes over and turns it into an item shop of sorts. All of the usual items (plus two) that you would get in LttP you get here. You can items for a smallish amount, and it is yours until you die, at which point you lose it. You can also buy the item for a very large price, and then it is yours permanently and you can obviously carry multiple items (all items you own plus the one you are renting). This system allows you to not only explore the world and do its puzzles in any order you want, but also the dungeons (each dungeon lets you know on its exterior the item you will need in order to solve it). But, besides just needing that particular item to merely beat a dungeon, each one usually offers some use for the other items to find secrets, like heart pieces, rupees, or maiamais (little shell creatures that you can trade in 10 of to upgrade a weapon) in them. So, you can rent as many as you can afford, or would like to risk, since dying means you lose all of them, and take on a dungeon with a full arsenal- as the additional items prove helpful but are not necessary, or you can come back later, once youve bought additional items. Its really a great system that promotes the open world nature of the game, giving Link to the Past that feel of what if you could play this game in any order youd like to explore it in.

Also, no longer do you run into that issue in Zelda games where you do a neat puzzle that you enjoyed solving and the reward is a 100 Rupee and youre like ah fuck, Im already maxed out. Rupees are more meaningful than ever before in this game, and youll never be maxed out- rupees are actually a meaningful reward because of this system. Usually, Zelda puzzles are fun enough on their own to solve, without the reward being lame being a big deal, but obviously a good reward is nice too.

Oh, and also I really enjoy the enemy gauntlet bonus room at the end of this game too. Its pretty tough, but not too hard, and its fun to use your large combination of weapons youll have in it.

Simply adding 2 great mechanics to an already great game, adds a whole new dimension (ha ha) to it and a ton of depth and makes it to me, the most fun Zelda game. Simple as that.

Next up: clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank clank

#10. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis, 1991)
The first video game I ever played! Ive talked about Sonic a bunch already obviously, and a lot I say would just be redundant. But clearly it had an impact because were here 30 years later and it has never not been my favorite series. I was into all the Sonic media. The TV Shows, the comics, the toys, the Tiger games, a mini pinball machine, I was Sonic for Halloween at least once, shirts and stuff, all the way to these days where I use screencaps in my Zoom backgrounds at work.

Everything just perfectly clicked in this game. The way Sonic controls, the platforming, jumping on enemies, beating bosses, running past the goalposts, jumping into that big special stage ring if you got 50, the oft overlooked ring mechanic of always being able to survive as long as you have one ring (short of getting crushed or falling down a pit) really this was a fantastic mechanic that never gets credit for working and still sticking through. As I said in my other review, Sonic is not a game about going fast. So many people deride these games for this, saying well they let me do it in Green Hill and then took it away in every other stage and thats why I dont like it oh well Im sorry a game introducing different ways to utilize Sonics movement isnt the exact same just run fast every single level. Sega eventually kowtowed to fans and made these games in 3D. Some are ok. Most of them are bad. But if its what you like, I guess more power to you, but I feel like youve deluded yourself out of what makes Sonic Sonic based on a fallacy you had 30 years ago. Sonic is not about speed.

Sonic is about momentum. Yes, sometimes going fast plays a part in this, but it doesnt have to. Its momentum and how it interacts with slopes, bouncing off of enemies, going through loops, the pacing between going slow and going fast, and taking care to avoid obstacles. If you just plow forward, yes you will get punished and probably deserve it. Speed still plays a part here because there are sections spaced properly through out the game where you CAN fly through fast, and that is fun too. Look at the level progression. Green Hill- fast, Marble- slow, Spring Yard- Mostly fast except for those crushy elevators, Labyrinth- Slow, Star Light- FAST (I love the super steep slopes and double loops in this level, it provides a stark contrast to Labyrinth before it), Scrap Brain- can play pretty fast if youre good with timing and obstacles. But again, in each of these, your momentum uniquely affects you in each level. Marble has the lava geysers. Green Hill has the snaky pipe things that you spin down. Spring Yard has the big U-shaped halfpipe things, that you can spinroll out of (by the way, the down spinroll is an underappreciated thing about Sonic because spindash in Sonic 2 outshined it by most people, but pressing down to spinroll is a very effective thing to do in how you take out enemies and how it completely changes how you move around). Labyrinth throws you for a loop with controlling yourself in water plus the GODDAMN DROWNING tension, which is heart-pumping adrenaline, not to mention the unique boss where you just have to outclimb the water level, avoiding fireballs and spears. Star Light has steep slopes and the see saws that launch differently depending on how you land on them. And Scrap Brain has the conveyor belts and spinny-do platforms.

Plus, more I didnt mention in each of these levels but my point is Sonic 1 was interesting and fun because of how varied and interesting it was in how it incorporated this MOMENTUM. Oh, not to mention the trippy as fuck special stages where youre just falling endlessly in gravity and controlling a maze around sonic while like birds, fish, and bubbles take over the background what the fuck is even happening

Anyway, I Love this game. Its fantastically underappreciated by most people who like 2 more, but for me, this one is better, just a bit. I personally think the level design is better, the music is much better (Star Light and the Boss music stands out for me a lot), and the visual design is much better- I like the way it looks more than Sonic 2, its more smooth and less sharp- its still colorful, but more subtle than Sonic 2s color. The bosses are classic (Decapitation!!!).

Its also a much more important game both to me and in the Sonic pantheon. Im glad this one came first because it really solidified the importance of momentum in 2D platformers and that persisted well throughout most of Sonics 2D life. I knew as I went through my first loop-de-loop, when I went through that first snake pipe in Green Hill and hit the slope and launched through the air, even to when I outraced the lava floe in the little obstacle course in Marble (the one blocked by spikes and raised platforms)- I knew these games felt amazing and were perfect for me.

COPE

Next up: A successor that I am in the minority of liking more than its much more popular original game.
