Also this looks like a very... uninspired direction to go with this character. Not that that's a surprise.

The real-life murders were a Hollywood tragedy, and this movie is a Hollywood response to that tragedy. It shows mercy to the victims and drags the murderers through the mud. The Manson Family achieved celebrity status in real life, which they still have. This movie was an attempt to chip away at that status and diminish their real-world pop-culture power. Only a tiny little bit, but it's not an easy job to rewire the public's fascination with atrocity. We'll need a lot more movies like this (and a lot more than just movies) to actually shift the world in a better direction.

That said, I still think it's too eager to get gory. But I understand this desire to just wail on scum like the Manson Family, the same way that Inglourious Basterds did with the Nazis.

Really, all the Greek Gods are exceptionally awful.

I don't remember any bad stories about Hestia. She seems like maybe the only unambiguously kind god, which makes sense, since she's all about home and security and comfort and warmth, etc. And she's a pretty major god too. But I don't know all the myths so there might be something I haven't learned about.

Ivanka is Trump's favorite, has more of his charisma than his other kids, is a key figure in the Trump dynasty for supporters to rally around, and is still in a position to distance herself from Trump's actions if she chooses, which would be enough to regain any loyalists he's "losing" right now. They'd jump right back into line. I don't buy that misogynists wouldn't support her either. They'd view her as a tool, just a mouthpiece for Trump himself to use, while also being able to claim that "they can't be misogynists because they're voting for a woman" while smirking and knowing they're lying. And she's probably the most intelligent person in the family, which makes her more dangerous because she wouldn't commit as many public blunders as her father.

I don't know if she actually has greater political ambitions, but if she does then it won't be a fun time.

I directly quoted where you said this "phenomenon" hasn't had any published scientific study, which is incorrect. Whether you want to accept these studies doesn't negate their existence. And there will no doubt be more research done on it down the line.

It's important to note that despite getting an overwhelming amount of attention, this "phenomenon" hasn't had any published scientific study. Strange, given that psychologists don't seem to have much self control when it comes to publishing about trendy phenomena.

I mean even the most superficial glance at wikipedia would show you there have been published scientific studies.

Yeah, nobody talked about human experience and sensation prior to the internet.

That's not what I said at all!

As for the name ASMR, oh yeah that is definitely fake sciencey-sounding. Like, it was intentionally coined with that purpose, under the belief that a physiological sensation needed a fake sciencey name. Which is a dubious reason to give something a name. But that's what stuck, so oh well.

Interesting that Bob Ross has such a specific effect on people, but it only came to light decades after his show aired.

I don't think it did come to light decades later! It just isn't something that people were talking about as much before the internet. Probably because it's such a basic thing that most of the population takes it for granted. There are probably tons of other subtle sensations that people experience all the time, which just don't have names yet.

Bob Ross is the perfect example to show that it has nothing to do with sexy women whispering.

If you've felt it, you've felt it and know that it's real. Frisson probably is physiologically related, but one is emotionally elevating and the other is the opposite. I've heard people speculate that ASMR might be related to primate grooming behavior, which feels like it could be in the right ballpark.

It's also not the same as goosebumps from getting frightened.

I never really understood this ASMR stuff though.

It's a literal physical tingling response around the scalp and/or spine, usually triggered by being attentive to very small refined sensations, such as particular sounds (which is what people try to make videos about, usually unsuccessfully). There must be some genetic component to it or something, because some people get the response and some people just don't. People talk about falling asleep or being relaxed by it because it really only does happen when you're relaxed, like it's the body's way to reward you for being in a calm mental state where you're not stressed out. When you are in such a mental state, that's when you'd be able to pay attention to small refined sensations. So taking a break to pay attention to them can also put you in that mental state, and trigger the response.

ASMR works for me and it's like the complete opposite of anything sexual or erotic.

It honestly feels like the people making these "sexy" ASMR videos don't even know what ASMR is, and are just trying to cash in on the phenomenon by adding sex to it because they figure sex sells. And it does sell. And I also assume lots of people watching these "sexy" ASMR videos aren't even getting a legit ASMR response out of it.

I just started rewatching this again the other week! I remember loving the early seasons back when they first aired, but they definitely felt clunkier and kinda under-cooked compared to the later ones on this rewatch. Not that the earlier ones aren't still good, but the later seasons are so good.

I think the show only really figured out its identity in the second season, and then hit its stride in the third season, and just kept improving from there.
