I'll make an obvious dad joke at a restaurant and laugh at it to demonstrate that it's just a joke and waiters will more often than not take things literally and the joke will completely fly over their heads.

Takes things on the Internet so literally. Like gen Z and some milennials don't understand sarcasm at all. Maybe it's because they're having less face to face interactions and part of sarcasm is the delivery itself?

I used to love the Rock but I think something happened within the last 5-10 years I think that made me dislike him. I forgot what it was and whenever I see his name pop up I get a negative feeling about him

No he legit surfed a PR wave to stardom. He used to be the peoples champ and all we knew about him was his WWF persona and what he wrote in his book. He was very likable. But for the last 10 years he just looks and acts so fake and it makes it harder and harder to like him. People don't like disingenuous.

I spend time and energy trying to make small but personally significant efforts to reduce my carbon emissions, which I think at this point should be everyone's civic duty. It pisses me off that some people clearly feel so flagrantly above it.

The small bits that ordinary people do are drops in the bucket compared to corporations. It's almost pointless.

Big no. Sex builds intimacy. Even if you're allowed to get it from others it wont be the same because the emotional connection wont be there or you will build that emotional connection with others and youll be emotionally cheating on your significant other.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

250 per month = 730k in 30 years at 10% growth.
If you can scrape together an additional $100 per month, you'll exceed 1 mil.

If you live in california for example, minimum wage will get you like 65k per year. You will have to live in a less expensive area, but there are plenty of nice areas that are not stupidly expensive. So with that 65k if you simply put in 10k per year into retirement, and live off 55k gross salary, you'll retire a multimillionaire.

Max 401k is 23k, and remember thats pre-tax.

But like I said, even if you do half of that and don't do any roth contributions, you'll still end up with like 3.5 mil at 65.

If you are mid 30s like me (34), and you maxed your 401k, you could retire at 65 with like 5 million and thats with like minimal match, also that assumes the max doesn't increase over time, and also assumes a 10% growth rate.

last month I actually took all my 401k money out of its default targeted fund and put it all in the S&P.

If you max your roth on top of your 401k, you'd retire with another ~1.5 million.

Thats nearly 7 million for doing no additional investing other than maxing 401 contributions and putting aside $500 for roth IRA.
Even if you do half of the max 401k and still do the $500/mo for roth IRA, you're retiring with like 5 million.

Whats stopping you??

Id rather find a balance where i can provide my kid a memorable (but realistic to my income) upbringing while safeguarding both my own and their future.

Ive been able to provide my son with things i only wish i had as a kid, but not at the sacrifice of saving for his education or my own retirement.

A balance is best.

But for people too far in that savings/investments mindset, someone once explained to me, if he raises his kids right, he won't need to invest for their future, they will take care of themselves. If he doesn't raise his kids right, then they'd waste all his money. I know theirs obvious flaws in that kind of dichotomous thinking but the idea is accurate that more important than money is how you raise your kids. And that doesn't necessarily mean give them everything and spoil them. The opposite actually, hardship is what makes you stronger. Now when it comes to college savings, Im absolutely on the side of paying for your kids college because thats just ridiculous nowadays.

I think we as a society have to embrace YOLOing more.

The mentality of grinding until ur 65 only to enjoy at best about 10 years of your life work free, have your investments pay for ur nursing home and then you die, I think is not the optimal way to live your life.

Do invest, do save for retirement, buy if you really want something just go for it. Go on that trip, make priceless memories for you and your kids. I rather be broke at 70 and living off social security lol nowing I gave my kids an amazing upbringing and memories to cherish and even pass down, than to live to 80 with a ton of money, but have lived more frugal than I would have wanted.

When we got married we talked about having 3-4 kids. Now we're done after 2. It's partly because her pregnancies were complicated with gestational diabetes, hyperemesis, and bad GERD, and a DVT on the second one. And now as I work full time and she works part time, childcare is a huge barrier to having a third. It would put too much burden on our parents to help out.

It's just mind blowing to me cuz I would not be able to afford my own house if I waited even a few more months. I bought at the perfect time, April, when rates were their lowest all year. The day after I locked my rate, rates jumped up. I also pushed my budget above my max, and while I'm young and am borderline tolerating it by working a bit extra, if I fast forward 10 years the house is gonna look like a bargain. So in retrospect I'm very happy with my decision. But real estate is broken in this country.
