I live here bc I was born in the area, it's pretty and people leave me the fuck alone. I live in the prime location for hiking and storm watching. Which is good for me bc I study meteorology as a hobby.
A lot of the people here are kinda shit but I don't associate with others much anyway, regardless of where I am, so who gives a fuck? Also, some of the people aren't shit. It's just that the ones who are are very vocal and "Hey look at me and how country I am!"
Some of my family who has actually lived in the mountains and kept to themselves their whole lives are actually alright and some are even fairly intelligent. They just don't come down from up there to vote or anything which kinda sucks. Lol

Unequal solar variation is the main driver of weather on earth.

What is the cause of wind?

Wat?
You answered the question before asking it pretty much. Wind is the result of air diffusing from high to low pressure basically. Air along the equator is heated and rises, which causes low pressure at the surface. Air then moves toward the equator along the surface to replace it. Aloft, air moves to the north until it converges at the border with the Ferrel cell. This convergence aloft leads to surface divergence. Look up the Hadley, Ferrel, and Polar cells of you're interested. It's much easier to explain with illustrations. Also though, due to Earth's rotation, the air moves to the right in the north hemisphere (called the Coriolis effect) because there's more west to east velocity along the equator than toward the poles. This causes wind to move parallel to isobars rather than diffusing right into the low pressure system. Leads to counterclockwise rotation of low pressure systems and clockwise high pressure systems, etc. So...that's global winds. Also due to Coriolis, where air diffuses between these global cells that I mentioned, jet streams result. The jetstream meander due to the coriolis effect being stronger near the poles, leading to what are referred to as ridges and troughs. Convergence aloft tends to happen to the east of ridges, leading to surface divergence (ie a high pressure system) and divergence aloft tends to happen to the east of troughs leading to surface convergence and low pressure at the surface. Its further complicated by the fact that thermal lows do happen as well, where localized heating results in rising and low pressure at the surface. On the mesoscale and microscale, heating often leads to thunderstorms as well, where small pockets of air rise and cause surface convergence (why thunderstorms tend to be windy). Then on days where larger pressure systems are not dictating wind direction, winds tend to be calm and variable where the local settling of cooler air and rising of warmer air tends to take charge and cause small winds here and there.
There's a lot behind what drives winds depending on which winds you're talking about specifically. Ultimately though, it is all driven by unequal solar distribution, which is what you said, whether the difference between the equator and poles or more local differences...such as differences caused by cloud coverage or differences in how quickly surface features heat (think concrete vs vegetation or water)

I like you.

Why exactly does Bernoulli's principle occur? I understand that air over the top (curved) wing moves faster to keep up with the air below the wing (straight) - but why doesn't the air on the top slow down?

From my understanding, it doesn't slow down because of the disruptive camber of the wing. Simply put, the air can't match the same speed as the air below the wing - and if it does, you're in a world of danger. The air will converge and become on and the same again past the trailing edge of the wing.
