I watched the movies when I was a kid and liked them but I have no idea what happens besides they gotta get the ring to the place. Are the books darker than the movie?

Tolkien uses a lot of detail, so you get a bunch of stuff that happened in between scenes/was compressed. Sometimes you get a few pages of what it was like outside on a certain day, or a completely unnecessary side story about something random xD

You also get a lot more initial backstory to the ring and how it works.
