As for Goku, of course he's going to give second chances to villains because he wants to fight them again. Goku tried to spar Freeza because the fight was boring when Freeza was out of power. Its easy for Goku to spar villians because Goku is the strongest in the universe. There's no worry for Goku to get killed by the bad guys since with a few exceptions, he will always one up them.
