alright, an actual write-up:

The barrier between life and death has been porous from the beginning, but increasingly so towards the end. There is something rotten in Denmark, and here it is literalized as Hamlet and Horatio stand in a mass grave. Yorick is brougt back to life through words, as Hamlet begins his speech with remembrance and ends in the present tense, speaking to the skull directly. Ophelia is revised through Hamlet's claim. Hamlet redefining his relationship with Ophelia when she's dead foreshadows his own fate and is maybe even a bit karmic, but more on that later. Then, of course, the barrier is porous as Laertes and Hamlet leap into the grave before their deaths.

The clowns, as they do, speak truth through humour and discuss some major themes. Has Hamlet, like Ophelia, been allowing himself to be taken by the currents? The water analogy suggests two truths that look the same - Either Ophelia drowned herself, or water drowned her. Water is fate or fortune, and if taken to its logical conclusion, calls into question if we have any free will at all. This question is subverted when, officially, Ophelia's death was an accident and she is to have a Christian burial. Hamlet has been searching for a meaningful death, and through it a meaningful life, but increasingly it seems out of one's control to define themselves.

Hamlet going off at Laerte's show of grief puts us back in inky cloak territory. He's talking about himself moreso than Laertes, and it comes off like an unutterable warning to a fellow traveler from someone who's been down that road. He lists all the ridiculous things he could do, but in the end what he'll really do is rant.

I think to make it all in Mae's head would have been over-explaining it, and making it too neat. The thing is, the supernatural is already symptomatic of our anxieties made concrete. If it's in her head, all you end up with is a diegetic metaphor - Mae has anxiety/depression which manifests for her in this way using the aesthetics of hauntology. It tames the hauntological, and takes away its power to both mean and defy meaning. Both the world and Mae's psychological state are reduced to what is handily knowable, when horror can suggest the inexplicable and inexpressible depths of human experience. By expressing the horror as real, or at least not explaining it away entirely, it opens up the supernatural for wider interpretation that better represents the irrationality and uncanny of the real world.

As for the cult, it... doesn't feel that farfetched to me? Like, it does feel we are on the verge of reactionary atavistic death cults. Beyond that, I didn't find it disconnected from Mae's problems. Maybe its my own blind spots coupled with how I approach texts, but I wasn't thinking about mental illness at all until afterwards when I heard other people talking about it. It's absolutely there, but I just read Mae as experiencing being a subject under late capitalism, and the gnawing despair and sense of worthlessness that comes with it. The cult shows an alternative path for Mae. Both the cult and Mae are acting out of anxiety. Both are fixated on nostalgia for the past, and for lost futures, but on different levels. NITW is a ghost story, be it literal ghosts or the semiotic ghosts haunting Possum Springs. What can you do about all that anxiety? You can sublimate it by joining a death cult sacrificing children to the God of Capitalism. You can surrender to an ideology where everything is reduced to a market element to lessen your existential dilemma. Our metaphor for the market is the invisible hand, when the market is actually us - it's our alienated labour perceived as inexplicable and autonomous. There's no underlying logic between performing human sacrifice and Possum Spring's economy, but the monster pit is given totemic power to give the cult a sense of control. It's an expression of alienation, an opportunity to externalize and ritualize the anxiety. Mae, in the end, would rather feel the anxiety.

Let's look at the Casey thing. He's a lost kid from a dead-end town. He, and really all of Possum Spring, can fall off the face of the earth and it would be "doesn't matter, who knows, life goes on". This reading is present, but the death cult adds a new dimension without taking anything away from it. One of the myths of modernity is that capitalism will solve its own problems, and this is a distorted expression of that. The detritus of capitalism is re-inserted as raw material, as commodified bodies, as grist to the mill. It doesn't matter if there's a monster, the act itself is out of a desire to connect with a meta-narrative where sacrifice makes sense at all. It's out of a desire to believe that we are killing ourselves and each other at the altar of capitalism for a good reason.

From the first line, the play sets the mood of a Denmark full of anxiety and paranoia. Later, we have the spooky ghost, but also Horatio recounting Hamlet Sr's military history in a segment that goes on a bit too long. I don't think much about this segment usually, but there's a bit of mirroring here - Horatio starts the play by telling the story of Hamlet Sr, and is tasked with telling the story of Hamlet Jr at the end. Given the little bit we get about how Hamlet will be remembered (more on that later), how accurate is this portrait of Hamlet Sr, or any of Hamlet's description of his father throughout the play for that matter? Did Hamlet Sr. have this much power over Hamlet in life as he does as a ghost? The status quo changed dramatically shortly before the start of the play, and we don't know what these relationships were like beforehand. Did Hamlet always hate his uncle or is it just because of the re-marriage?

On the ghost, Bernardo suggests that it appeared because the current military build-up in Denmark is due to wars that Hamlet Sr started. They are figuratively and literally haunted by the past. There are decisions to be made about how to stage the ghost that are not entirely straightforward. In this scene, it's seems pretty concrete, as multiple characters see it, though later scenes are inconsistent with that, which perhaps goes back to the fracturing of the Reformation. The play doesn't comes down on whether the ghost is demon or spirit, and Hamlet switches back and forth over the course of it.

As the state and the king are one, Denmark is described as being cold and dead while the king is a ghost. Furthermore, in this scene, the characters constantly say the ghost is like the king, referring to Hamlet Sr, but it also works if referring to the Claudius. Hamlet later gets a lot out of speaking about Claudius as if he's already dead in the ground. Both Claudius and the ghost are both resemble a king, both full of sin and corruption, and both are dead. Performances that have the two played by the same actor draws the connection even more explicitly.

A major scene, and a fun one as any with a lot of mad Hamlet will be. After cursing himself for his inaction his next move is... to watch and wait. Did he ever really need confirmation of the murder or is he just delaying again? I'd say more than Claudius, his concern is on Gertrude's guilt, hence the focus on the player queen in what we saw of the play, and the direct interrogation for her response. There's a lot open to interpretation, which is fitting for this scene about interpretation. Nothing in the script gives a definitive answer, and much of it comes down to choices in the physical performance. Hamlet also spoils his plan somewhat, and to a particularly great degree in the 1980 adaptation I'm watching. Derek Jacobi's Hamlet is incredibly disruptive during the performance, and the king could reasonably have risen because of Hamlets antics rather than false fire. Patrick Stewart's Claudius calmly asks for light, and shines it on Hamlet's face with a disapproving shake of the head before leaving.
