Ken Penders takes a lot of flak for his writing in the series (most of it deserving!), but I honestly felt like he had a pretty good handle on Sally most of the time. This is really where she makes the jump from dim-witted team leader (remember when she hatched that brilliant plan to get herself roboticized and then everyone else ruined it because she didn't tell any of them?) to full-fledged, fully competent tactician, and that's basically all Ken. Different writers have different takes on her character, and Ken's changed over time, but right now this is where she's at.

Yeah, the old Ken Penders was awesome. But he got too full of himself as time went on, and also somehow got this inane idea into his head that he had skill as an artist.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Doc's Ranking: 10/51
Karo's Ranking: 18/49

The beginning point for some of Disney's most iconic characters, this movie is actually three previously released shorts with new material to link them all together. Nearly all the characters are top notch (though I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that), as are the songs. The unique animation style that was used is very reminiscent of the book's original illustrations.
This movie exudes a simple charm that makes it work despite having no overlying plot, villain, etc.
Only the somewhat disconcerting package format keeps this movie from being any higher on the list, it's absolutely amazing otherwise.


Best Character: Tigger

C'mon, how could anyone not like Tigger? He's the best out of an amazing cast of characters. Eeyore the emo donkey is a close second.


Worst Character: Kanga

She's just bland, boring, and has no personality. A shame, as Pooh's world is rather short on female characters.

Yikes. I suppose I can understand someone not liking the film, but anyone who doesn't place the three fairies as the worst characters is just wrong. Prince Phillip might be a little bland for today's standards, but he's not outright awful like the fairies.

I did not like the fairies either, but it at least felt like they were real people, and not department store mannequins.

Sleeping Beauty

Doc's Ranking: 11/51
Karo's Ranking: 40/49

This is simply the most generic and unoriginal Disney movie ever made. Filled with characters as bland, two-dimensional, and washed out as the animation style used to create them, this movie is the second of only two movies on this list to utterly bore me, to the point where I'm just about ready to fall under Maleficent's sleeping spell as well.
It's like they started out creating the epic battle at the end, then were like: 'oh crap, we just used 90% of the movie's budget! what do we do now?!'
It may have some very pretty backgrounds, but the harsh angular art style does not animate very well and lacks the flow of previous movies. Plus there was a few awful cheapass things they did, such as during the scenes that show the whole castle asleep, note how the the people painted into the background (so they wouldn't have to go to the horrible labor of actually, y'know, animating them) are just standing around, completely unaffected by the sleeping spell.
The only thing in this movie that hadn't been done before (and better) in Cinderella and Snow White is the dragon battle scene, which takes way too long to build up to.

Best Character: Maleficent

The only real 'character' in a movie filled with people that look like rough draft placeholder roles. She manages to be an effective villain despite being overly enamored with her own evilness.


Worst Character (tie): Princess Aurora & Prince Phillip

So Aurora, she's a princess. She can sing. Now, Phillip, he's a prince. He meets a girl. He likes her. He can sing too! What amazing character depth!

Mulan

Doc's Ranking: 12/51
Karo's Ranking: 20/49


A beautiful movie with some good songs, but severely lacking in the character design department (with one big exception). The movie starts out amazing, with the whole way the style and everything so perfectly captures an oriental feel. Then Mushu appears, and the movie's charm hits a brick wall at 100 MPH. I mean, seriously, Eddie Murphy? Could you possibly find someone more un-oriental then him?
The movie goes downhill from there as we are introduced to many forgettable supporting characters and a forgettable villain. Although there were still some very good scenes with Mulan in the training camp, it never really recaptures the magic found in the first part of the movie.
Mulan is by no means a bad movie, just a profoundly disappointing one based on what it could have been.


Best Character: Mulan

Also known as the only character in the movie that doesn't suck. One of Disney's greatest heroines, she is both the deepest character and the provider of much of the movie's humor.
She pretty much has to carry the whole movie on her shoulders thanks to the poor supporting cast, but thankfully, she is up to the challenge.


Worst Character: Shan Yu

Frankly, one could make the case for nearly every member of the supporting cast to receive this title. However, this award goes to Shan Yu, the most forgettable Disney villain ever created.
Ask anyone who the the villain in The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast is and they'll immediately reply with Scar and Gaston. Ask them who the villain in Mulan is and they'll be like "uh.. there was like this guy on a horse who did stuff?" That's pretty much all there is to him.

Tarzan

Doc's Ranking 13/51

A beautifully animated movie with some decent songs, and also the last movie of the Disney Renaissance. Tarzan falls into the 'slightly above average' tier with a great story, good character design (with one major exception), but still falls just a bit short of the truly legendary Disney movies.


Best Character: Jane Porter

Jane is the proof that you can have a classy victorian lady character with, y'know, a personality. Her interactions with Tarzan provide the majority of humor in the movie.


Worst Character: Terk

Whoever thought that Rosie O'Donnell, who possibly has the most irritating voice known to man, would be a good fit for a voice actor in an animated movie is seriously under the influence of something. So we have Terk, who apparently is a girl gorilla, though you would never know that except for the one line where her mother calls her 'young lady'. Every scene she is in, she ruins. Every time she opens her mouth, you want to bludgeon her with a baseball bat. There are no words in the english language to adequately describe how bad this character is.

Bolt

Doc's Ranking 14/51
Karo's Ranking 21/49

A rare success in the CGI department from the 'main' Disney studio. Bolt is the first post-Renaissance movie where the humor adds to the story rather then taking away from it. It almost feels like a Pixar movie in that regard. Although the character of Bolt may seem a little too similar to Buzz Lightyear in places, it still works. The whole 'styrofoam kryptionite' thing was hilarious.
All in all, a great reprieve after all the epic failing that happened all too often in the post-Renaissance era, but still not quite enough to be counted among the elite Disney movies.


Best Character: Rhino

Proof that you don't need some expensive celebrity to make a great 'funny sidekick' character. One of the few post-Renaissance sidekicks that was actually funny.


Worst Character: Penny

Her existence in the film seems to be mainly so they could advertise the movie as starring Miley Cyrus. Besides, the world is only big enough for one spunky pre-teen crimefighting heroine named Penny with a pet dog.

Hercules

Doc's Ranking: 15/51

Like most of the movies in this tier, Hercules has both many good things and many bad things about it. Lets get the bad stuff out of the way first. First off, we get sidetracked on Herc's overly long backstory (that is startlingly similar to Superman's, btw), which has little relevance to the primary plot of the movie (the love between Herc and Meg). Imagine if 'Aladdin' started out with a bunch of fluff that detailed how his parents (presumably) died and how he became a street rat. *shudder*
All we need to know about Herc's past could have been easily summed up at the end of the Muses' 'The Gospel Truth' song.
The introduction of Megara marks a turning point in the movie, and it begins to finally feel like the Renaissance movie that it is. It gradually gets better and better leading up to the ending, which is one of the best endings that Disney has ever done.
Hercules is a good movie, though not without it's flaws, it is worth watching for the ending alone.


Best Character: Megara

I know what you're saying: 'why not Hades?' Hades may have been an awesome villain, but Meg is on a whole other tier. She has a level of character development rarely seen in Disney movies, especially in the heroine. Her betrayal and ultimate redemption adds some meat to a story that's otherwise extremely weak.


Worst Characters(s): Pain & Panic

More useless and annoying henchmen who are overshadowed by their master. Yeah, Disney could sure use a lot more of those.
