Probably poor.

I always had trouble with abstract math in general (anything pre-algebra and up), mainly because in K-12 I had like maybe four worthwhile math teachers, while the rest were utter garbage who only still had jobs because tenure exists (one of the reasons why I'm hugely against the entire idea of tenure for teachers, or at least tenure without some form of periodic review).

Because Math is THE subject where "building on what you've learned previously" is so damned important, it meant that every year I fell behind because of a shit teacher made every successive year harder.

It even reflected in my SAT scores - I scored a 780/800 on my Verbal, but only 530/800 on Math.

I managed to make it to pre-calc levels in college (mainly because of multiple statistics classes for Psych), but I've always struggled a bit with the abstract side of math whenever I deal with it. Whereas I've always been pretty good at being able to handle more concrete math (addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractions/percents, etc) in my head on a moment's notice.

What hurts most though is that it's been decades since school for me. And while I still use concrete math fairly regularly (calculating discounts, tips, measurements, etc), abstract math doesn't come up as often in everyday life. So most of what I did manage to pick up has kind of atrophied (in the same way that I took 7 years of French in school, but if you dropped me in Paris today I couldn't even ask my way to the nearest bathroom).

Interesting response. Yeah, teachers can make or break a student. And yeah, abstract math can be harder to grasp and retain for the reasons you listed.

How would you rate your mathematical ability?

Although I know a lot of Calculus and some Differential Equations, those concepts aren't even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to math! There's also things like Modern (Abstract) Algebra which are much harder to learn and grasp. I actually would say I'm a beginner to intermediate in terms of mathematical ability.

I'm not religious myself, but I grew up in a somewhat spiritual household. Although I don't consider talking about religion "taboo" myself, when I hear other people talk about it still has somewhat of a forbidden, controversial-kinda "shock value" to it. Not that I'm bothered, I find it amusing actually, although I avoid talking about religion if I can if I want to avoid conflict.

My question for you, does anyone kinda feel the same way? It's hard to describe.

I think many of you would say you would return it, and I'd like to say I would to. But I've seen "honesty experiments" conducted in the Las Vegas Strip where the vast majority of people would not return the money. So to be honest I don't know exactly what I'd do in this situation if I personally encountered it.

I'd probably use a car to drive right through it and then light the Terminator on fire with gas and a lighter. I don't know if I'd be able to defeat it, but that's a start. I guess I can try to locate the neural net processor and remove it to disable the machine as well.

Would you be able to decode the Pioneer Plaques without help?

Would you be able to understand the Pioneer Plaques?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_plaque

One of the many problems of communicating with an alien civilization is of course: being able to understand each other. Extraterrestrials of course wouldn't use the same symbols to communicate as humans do. So how would humans be able to convey information about their species and home to other civilizations?

Carl Sagan designed the Pioneer Plaques which contains pictorial information about humans, the solar system, and nearby stars. These plaques are onboard the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft in the hope that one day, if aliens came upon the probes, they would get information about who created them and the home planetary system that they reside in.

The numerical information depicted on the plaques is of course not in familiar base-ten Arabic numerals but encoded in a special way that is "universal" - that is, it should apply to anyone reading them regardless of what number system they use. Sagan used a bit of scientific knowledge to create that number system.

Would you be able to decode the Pioneer Plaques?

I don't think at first glance, I would have been able to decode the numbers on the plaques. I did understand at first glance the numbers were in binary and the picture/key on the top left had something to do with a hydrogen atom, but I wouldn't know at first glance they has something to with an energy transition of an electron and the wavelength and frequency of the photons they would emit.
