I've seen a lot of advertising for "Best Ball" leagues and I feel like that defeats a lot of the purpose of fantasy football. I love the idea of not having to agonize over my starting lineup, but I feel like it would make everything hollow and easy to lose interest. Plus it makes inactive owners much more dangerous.

I like Best Ball A LOT for several reasons:

1) Not needing to interact with it on a regular basis allows you to enter into a lot more of these leagues
2) some people love drafting but find the day to day handling to be cumbersome
3) Inactive owners can be more dangerous; I don't necessarily see this as a negative- inactive owners can ruin leagues
4) Creates different strategies (ie "Desean Jackson" types who have a tendency to have 14 bad games and 3 massive games become viable to draft, third down pass catching specialist RBs now have more value because you get their big games, and this opens up your roster construction options)

I'm planning on running a "Best Ball, with transactions" league just to see how that would further change strategy

Oh that sounds fascinating. Is there a limit to how many people you can grab off waivers or does it almost become like a weekly fantasy challenge by the end?

We set it so that every waiver claim costs $1 of FAAB, so you have to balance blowing your budget on big names early in the season vs having budget left at the end of the year for small / many transactions.

it's the first time I'm playing in one

So, this year I'm in [at least] 6 leagues (1 dynasty and 5 redraft)
-Dynasty League going into Year 4 (12 team HPPR / QB / SF / 2 RB / 3 WR / TE / Flex, 23 bench)
-Work League (10 team HPPR / 2 QB / 2 RB / 3 WR / 1 TE / 2 Flex, 6 bench)
-Friend league with a lot of overlap with dynasty league (12 team PPR with big play scoring, QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, Flex, 12 bench)
-Separate friend league with less dynasty league overlap (8 team, HPPR, 2 QB, 3 RB, 4 WR, 2 TE, 3 flex, 4 bench)
-League with a bunch of guys from a bar downtown (12 team, PPR, QB / 2 RB / 2 WR / TE / Flex, 7 bench)
