although maybe you'd meant something more like "i can't decide if klonoa will be at the top because i know you like klonoa, or if you'll hate it for how happy it is" or something like that. pretty certain that at some point you definitely pointed out how it was at odds with my usual interests at least.

oh yeah, this is certainly possible. i remember i absolutely put snowball scuffle in that "???" category because with that song, i was like "well i know you love kirby music but this song is also very happy so maybe you think this sucks because of that reason??" could very well be that i initially said similar things about moonlight museum.

also that's an extremely cool personal story with klonoa 2! I didn't know that about you, but honestly, what a fitting soundtrack to be one of your earliest experiences with vgm-out-of-context, or even active attentiveness to music in that exact way! the idea of submissions to this sort of thing being "personal" is really cool. and it can create some neat intersections with ones relationship with another person when you start to take a look at things like this. I'd have never known that an ost so important to me was also deeply important to you, but in a completely different way!

yeah that's very cool.

another one of my "early music experiences" was the album speaking of now by pat metheny group - my dad owned that CD and i played it over and over again. (to go on a tangent, i think you've been here long enough to remember the user amazing telephone? i want to say he was a music critic for a living. anyway, back in 2004 he posted his top 10 bands and artists in a "post your top 10 bands" topic and i recognized absolutely nobody he listed EXCEPT for "pat metheny," i think he was #6 or something. that was another cool very early board 8 memory for me.) anyway, i said to my brother (who also loved speaking of now): "wow this klonoa 2 music kind of sounds like pat metheny group doesn't it?" and he was like "huh no it doesn't." funny how i was being the "mycro" in this case ([insert music thing] sounds like PAT METHENY") and he was being the skeptical "lasa" ("i'm not really hearing it") haha.

also interesting how your comparison point for moonlight museum was actually allan holdsworth rather than metheny. i guess i associate the calmness and soothing sound with PMG but yeah, the holdsworth comparison also makes a lot of sense.

you suspected this would be low because i "dislike happy music" and its very simple "kindergarten music class" start.

i actually predicted that this would be #1 of my noms. normally, i would predict that it would end up pretty low because of the reasons you described, but i already knew about your affection for klonoa music so i had an advantage there. still, i didn't expect it (or any of my noms) to end up THIS high, #11 is pretty crazy!

i got into the klonoa 2 soundtrack because super, super early in my board 8 days, inviso e-mailed me MP3s of the entire soundtrack. at the start of the "lasa ranks 100 songs nominated by nfun" topic, i talked about how i didn't become a "serious music fan" (lol that didn't sound pretentious...) until 2005 but this happened even earlier than that, somewhere in 2004. of course, i've liked music for as long as i can remember but when i was a kid, it was always "i like this song that plays on the radio" or "i like the song that plays in the background in this video game." the klonoa 2 soundtrack was actually one of my earliest "i'm going out of my way to specifically listen to this" experiences. so for that reason, moonlight museum was probably my most "personal" nom. fitting that it was the last one to go!

anyway, it's been fun following how my noms did! i'm glad my taste in music was obvious in these songs haha.

often times, there is this frustrating artificial divide created which works from the assumption that prog is the opposite of punk, and that the two things are entirely incompatible---i see this as very false, and the whole 'rock in opposition' subgenre of prog is a big part of why.

totally agree that this is very false and ignorant. i can see how this idea originated, we all know the story of "prog kind of destroyed itself when yes released tales from topographic oceans and then punk came along and destroyed whatever was left of it." but only a few years later, there was post-punk, which was already a lot more experimental and out there than regular punk. even at the time, people were like "oh the punk bands are now doing the artsy and 'pretentious' stuff they claimed to hate about prog" lol

i'm not a fan of "normal punk rock" for the most part but i love a lot of stuff in punk-adjacent genres: pronk, post-punk, punk jazz etc.

oh wow, really cool that you weren't familiar with either this remix (reinterpretation) or the original version yet! i kind of automatically assumed you knew them because in my mind you know every single VGM song in odd time on the planet and they've all shown up on the "VGM in irregular time of the day" tumblr at one point or another. i expected weapon mode to rank high but not top 35 high, to be honest. glad you like it so much! i'm glad i nommed this at the last minute as my single "odd time VGM song" nom haha.

also, i really like the entire soundtrack and i had no idea that many people were credited as composers on it whoa

i don't really associate dream theater with CRAZy time signature changes tbqh - not moreso than any random '70s prog-style band, anyway. not saying none of their songs have complex time signatures but that's not the first thing i think of when i hear "dream theater."

sidenote: i'd actually never heard of LMR! it's awesome to me that they're just liquid trio experiment but with minnemann on drums instead of portnoy, since i'm a big fan of liquid tension experiment/liquid trio experiment. i need to listen to all of their stuff now!

i miss when new operating systems and software updates felt /exciting/ and /new/. everything to me now is so uninspiring and whenever i learn about anything new i'm freaking out "can i still use a version of sony vegas from 2004 on it?" as my first thoughts, which i'm sure you're all too aware of the feeling of.

i very much relate to this. i've been using windows since 3.0 and i vividly remember how epic and significant the startup sounds for each new windows sounded to me as a kid. it evoked very strong feelings of "fasten your seatbelts, we're going to a wonderful and beautiful world of new technology and inventiveness." judging by the comment sections of those "evolution of windows startup sounds" videos on youtube, a lot of other people also have very fond memories of these startup sounds, which makes me happy.

(95 still the best one)

speaking of strong memories, 3d space cadet pinball!! i played the crap out of the bundled with windows version of that game as a kid, to the point that it's hard for me to think of the song as "video game music." to me, it's "an elemental part of that part of my childhood," as much as the school i went to at the time is.

this was the writeup i was looking forward to reading the most because i was curious what bands/composeres/artists you would compare stewart copeland to, if any. i think he has an incredibly distinct style (for reasons you described) that i really love but i can't really think of other artists that sound like him and it seems like you agree that his music is pretty unique. yes, there's obviously elements that are reminiscent of virgil donati but if donati would make this song it would sound very different, as you pointed out.

my brother compared copeland's music to the obscure solo stuff by the keyboard player of a dutch progressive rock band - it's so obscure that it's not even on youtube (maybe i should try to upload it myself sometime) - but EVEN THEN i think he was just talking about his use of synthesizers and simple "happy blues scale" progressions because that guy's music is nowhere nearly as rhythmically complex as copeland's.

(also, i didn't know that copeland was being condescending about proggy/showy drummers. that's disappointing for sure though if you listen to his own drumming, it does make sense that he's not as much into that style of drumming, like you said.)

i will comment more later!

just skimmed through this entire list. i hardly read anything but a few comments i have now...

nice to see inspector norse get some love, i was totally obsessed with this song several years ago.

as a huge daft punk fan, i really like how you described stardust's only known song as the missing link between homework and discovery. i never thought of it that way but it makes total sense.

after reading the recent rank the tracks topic, i noticed that there's a surprising lack of grunge on this list - i think there's only the two nirvana songs? maybe the pixies if they count...
