MetalmindStats 04/21/23 10:56:27 PM #94 | I've thought about nominating the Celeste OST and/or the Sayonara Wild Hearts OST before, but besides both being more closely composed for their games' contexts than most OSTs, they each have their own awkward aspects for this series. Celeste's OST has some potential crossover appeal from the game's VGM renown, but its 99-minute length (referring to the designated OST only) is conversely a concern, considering our history with and past comments on albums over ~60 minutes outside this board's wheelhouse. Sayonara Wild Hearts' OST is short enough to work well, but it's comprised of a minority of mostly short, lyrics-centric pop songs sprinkled among a number of typically even shorter instrumentals. And the OST's tracklist pretty much bundles up all the former and all the latter in discrete batches, departing from the game's own order in the process. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 04/21/23 6:56:37 AM #30 | Beat Princess Remedy. 98% completion, and it seems I missed some secrets too. Still a surprisingly enjoyable gameplay loop - I could see myself eagerly replaying this in the future, and it's successfully interested me in the sequel to boot. I don't trust myself to actually consistently manage to play anything I nominate as of now, so holding off on that. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 03/30/23 4:52:33 AM #22 | A few that came to mind relatively quickly: Come on, take me to a place, I don't know--Daniel Olsn & Jonathan Eng (feat. Linnea Olsson), A Place I Don't Know All that song's lyrics, really, but the last line sums it up. And each day I learn just a little bit more--Elton John & Bernie Taupin, This Song Has No Title So without love and a promised land--Tears for Fears, Sowing the Seeds of Love If you're lost, you can look and you will find me--Cyndi Lauper, Time After Time There's also quite a few lines from Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill and the entirety of Portishead's Third that speak to me to a similar extent. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 03/28/23 9:38:23 PM #56 | Hellfire: Theres a certain understated yet somehow tawdry elegance to its quieter moments that I feel is essential to the piece as a whole, even if its not as memorable as its loud, sudden sections. Illmatic: Clearly good, but I seem to lack the positionality and perspective to properly perceive what so many people praise about it. Quebec: I could rank these songs in totally different orders, depending on my day-to-day temperament, and so many of them are memorable, though sometimes not desirably so - all a testament to their parent albums grab-bag appeal. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |
Topic | Rank the Albums Volume 4: Results |
MetalmindStats 03/25/23 10:58:42 PM #44 | Far East Suite: I think I fundamentally agree with both Fool and Sean's writeups, strangely enough. I find this album more than mildly evocative in the moment, and jazz has a high floor for me - even so, I'm left with those mental images lingering in lieu of the music itself, and so I'm not sure if it's truly testing my ceiling. Walking With Strangers: To me, it's musically and lyrically unified enough to feel like a concept album without even being one, all while the individual songs stand out even more for that. Perpetually pretty and on point vocal performances further propel an album I have difficulty describing - an ineffability which seems to help it stick in my head. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not: From a listeners perspective, its perfectly creditable and even catchy at times. Still, theres something missing from what comes off to me as a peculiarly slight, rather insubstantial and yet seemingly self-important effort. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 03/24/23 4:20:54 AM #35 | Seanchan posted... I'm figuring the Top 5 will be, in some order,IMO American Idiot, 10000 Days, and Black Sabbath are the shoo-ins, to the point where I almost expect them to be our top three. As for the other two, I'll guess jagged little pill and Rage Against the Machine. Also, let's see here... Palimpsest: I think its lyrics are very cleverly written, part of a meticulous narrative in general. To me, PtH are clearly good at switching up the tempo and delivery too, and each vocal song has a markedly memorable moment or two, but the sound here still isnt for me. Sucker Punch: I was comparatively very positive during its week, but my relisten proved something of a comedown from that ceiling. Rooms of the House: There's lots here I still don't get, but I've latched onto the parts that make me think of people I'm close to, and the intimate sentiment they carry with them. Fever: Enjoyable enough but felt too workmanlike and nondescript to really stick with me, I guess. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 03/19/23 8:50:34 PM #11 | Hm ok, I guess I'll post my thoughts on the albums too. So Long, Astoria: One of the two albums I never even planned a relisten of. I liked it most at its cutest, shaggiest, and least overtly punk, but that still wasn't saying much. Millennium: To me, this was what Spice seemed to be to many of us: listenable, all-too-carefully commercially crafted dreck. No Control: A pleasant surprise, probably in part because I never tried ranking its tracks. I found it considerably more propulsive, and the fairly punk-inherent aural repetition considerably less detrimental, than And Out Come the Wolves. Warmer in the Winter: I actually like Christmas music in general, but the originals underwhelmed me and it overall just wasn't as compelling as I'd hoped. --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

Raetsel_Lapin posted... !I'm pretty sure I prefer the regular version, but it was interesting to try and judge this video with its added intro, outro, & sound-effects. It's also been fun trying to guess if you were aware of the changes to the song in this video or if it's all a coincidence... like, I'm guessing you just went with the first official video you found, but I've expressed a lot of love for spoken word intros and outer-space ambiance before so this *could* be a very calculated play on your part. It's been a fun time either way....Well, I did know about the intro, not that I had it in mind at the time. However, I at least didn't remember the rest, as you might expect from someone who had to be told there was a clear audio quality difference between Mercy Street's official video and regular audio versions. At any rate, I know I wasn't really thinking about your preferences, and it's effectively all a coincidence in spirit. I nominated this version because, at the time, I was big on finding what I felt were the best versions of each song from their artists' official accounts, as opposed to simply nominating songs. Speaking of which, here's an updated George Washington link, since the original seems to be down now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv6OOuPI5c0 Also, I certainly didn't think I'd have such a high proportion of songs remaining at this stage, wow! --- she/her (or they/them) ~never knows what to say~ |

MetalmindStats 12/24/22 9:14:12 AM #45 | Sorry this took me so long... Seanchan posted... It somewhat bizarrely feels too long to me, despite only being 10 songs and 38.5 minutes. There were quite a few songs where I love the intro and the first 30 seconds, then that fades and I look and there's still another 45 seconds of the song left. There's always a lot of repetition in pop music but it just grated on me here. Part of me wonders if this album was stretched out at all to hit some sort of minimum length. As much as I love this album, I don't necessarily disagree with this critique - but usually I feel that the extra time lends the songs in question a certain improvisational, almost freeform quality that I appreciate. On that note, and somewhat ironically given its extensive employment of synths placing it firmly in the 80s pop sphere, She's So Unusual never once feels manufactured to me. Lauper (who landed several solo record deal offers for her voice in her Blue Angel days) naturally sings her own case here by letting her nerves and rawness show at times. But this is an album that lives up to its characteristically striking cover-art all around, from its typically well-written and at times even quietly revolutionary lyrics to soundscapes that reward exploration in unexpected ways. Time After Time: Force me to name a favorite song over and over again, and chances are you have my continual choice right here, time after time if you will. I don't feel I could really do justice to all the reasons why, in fact. All Through the Night: In Lauper's hands, it feels like it's (fairly autobiographically) about being young and having dreams and wanting to reach for them together with another, a theme which Lauper illuminates with astonishing earnestness, sans a hint of sentimentality. That helps make for my favorite ever vocal performance, and also my single favorite song to sing along to. Girls Just Want to Have Fun: Its infusions of motown and reggae influences help musically outline the inclusively feminist point that its famous video pictorially reinforced - and, of course, there's Lauper's sheer exuberance and enthusiasm in serving up her message. There's no song I personally prefer dancing to, and nothing I'd rather have taken up as my topmost anthem of self-expression. When You Were Mine: Raetsel's comment covers pretty much everything I would have mentioned. She Bop: Oddly enough, its subject matter wasn't actually originally Lauper's idea. However, her teasing, playful vocal manner stands as proof positive of how she latched onto its perspective to make for the most purely anarchic fun here. Money Changes Everything: This jaunty, melodica-enlivened opener really showcases the sheer range of Lauper's influences, from Elvis Presley to Billie Holiday (on her vocals) and The Police to R&B in general (on the music) - and also the way she turns them into something new. Witness: Laupers performance brings an on-point combination of uneasy emotion and exuberant energy to bear, powering what could have been a throwaway album track and belying its somewhat happenstance inspiration. Yeah Yeah: I have a persistent soft spot for this off-kilter closer, which feels like its the result of everyone Lauper worked with asking her to include a duet, to which she agreed - in characteristic fashion. The results: a classically early 80s synthesized-sounding male vocal deliberately contrasted with an always-alive star in the making. I'll Kiss You: Catchy and generally fun, but trying for soulful synth made its music so aggressively stereotypically 80s even I can tell, and its lyrics have aged poorly in more ways than one. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care and people who do." pronouns: she/her or they/them | never knows what to say |

I'm grossly unqualified to speak on the topic of cultural appropriation and there's really no way to touch on the song without jumping headfirst into that topic. I've tried approaching it a few different ways and I'm really not happy with how any of them came out.I have to admit that, in what I now realize is a great lapse of judgment on my part, I had never thought about cultural appropriation in the context of San Jacinto until I saw your post. IIRC, I chose that song to nominate out of Peter Gabriel's discography because it was my gateway song from lots of exposure as a kid, and then its lyrics felt like hidden depths when I finally perceived and understood them as an adult. ...But that latter bit probably just makes it sound worse, mea culpa. Sorry for forcing this conversation to come up. Worth noting is that though the album is called She's So Unusual, there really isn't much "unusual" about this (it's standard 80s fare) or about Lauper herself by modern standards - but her eccentricities were foundational, pushing the envelope in the direction that would later give us the likes of Lady Gaga and P!nk, among many others.I generally agree with this - certainly, I'd say its music tends to fit firmly within a specific mainstream mold, though distinguished by Lauper's voice. However, I do think the lyrics of many of these songs went hand-in-hand with Lauper's persona to cement her solo debut as, indeed, so unusual relative to what was radio-friendly in 1983. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care and people who do." pronouns: she/her or they/them | never knows what to say |
