I can hear tons of fireworks going off elsewhere. Hope I can see some this year. Ever since my sleep schedule got fixed, my mood has been much improved, so getting to see fireworks on top of that would just be perfect. Even before corona, I hardly ever got to see any after moving here. There's a nice big park right next to me that would be perfect for launching some from, but they don't use that.

Got a powerful nostalgia hit just a bit ago. I decided to look up the I Spy books and was reminded of the I Spy: Spooky Mansion PC game. I only ever played that in the early 2000s at my old library's computers in the kid's section. I still kinda remember what it was like. A computer game based on a book series I loved, that took place in a haunted mansion with the same handmade style as the books. The player gets trapped in the mansion and is told to find pieces of a treasure map to get free, creating a compelling goal to work towards.

And that in turn reminded me of a similar book I liked: Look-Alikes by Joan Steiner. It shows off actual, physical sets of parts of a city, but every object is made from some ordinary household item. All I can really remember is a train whose head car is made from a coffee pot and a city scene where the sidewalk is made from saltine crackers. It was amazingly creative and I wish I had gotten more from the series.

Found out this PC game my aunt got me years ago on a whim that turned out to be surprisingly good got remastered and ported to modern consoles. It's called Neighbours From Hell. It's a comedic, stealthy, point-and-click puzzle game where you sneak into your jackass neighbor's house and set up pranks for him to fall into. He goes through a routine every level, so you have to observe it, gather items to screw it up, and set them all up without him spotting you, while also doing it in a way where he falls for the next one as quickly as possible before he calms down.

It got a sequel called NFH: On Vacation which mixes things up by taking place in China, India, and Mexico, plus a cruise ship, and you having to avoid the neighbor's mom as well. On the modern console versions, the vacation levels are mixed in between the seasons at the neighbor's house, though it does remove a couple of the original PC house levels.

The only real problem is that in later levels, you'll be pretty busy setting up pranks while the neighbor is falling for the earlier ones, but the increased resolution of the modern console versions makes that much less of an issue. It's definitely worth a try, or at least watching a 100% longplay.

Oh yeah, and there is a shoddy Russian knockoff with the same name, so don't be fooled into thinking that's official at all.

Saw a review for that forgotten PS360-era game, Wet. It reminds me of the soft spot I've got for those games from that time that didn't take themselves seriously, but still put in the effort to make mostly gritty environments. Stuff like Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row 3, and 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. I wish there was more of them.

Gen 5 looks fine visually. The characters (or the main ones at least) were designed by the fan artist imalou, who does make some cute characters. What really matters is the writing. It's what helped FiM stand out and last for so long.

Was anyone shocked by McAfee's death? Aside from inventing one of the first antivirus programs, the guy lived a wild dysfunctional life, full of drugs, alcohol, and various illegal activities, including allegedly murdering his neighbor while high on bath salts. And while most news agencies will say it was a suicide, McAfee tweeted several times that he would never pull an Epstein. There's a pretty good video summing up his life up until 2015 here:

Actually, there was a mobile Dead Space game, but it was actually a third-person shooter since this was waaaaaaaaaay back in the early days of smartphone mobile gaming before it was a 99.7% microtransaction-infested wasteland. If THAT was the kind of mobile game they wanted to make, that would be okay.

There's a rumor that EA is going to revive the Dead Space series at EA Play this July. Assuming it's true, I have no faith it'll be good. It'll either be a fucking mobile game or a pale imitation that will flop since the team has disbanded and the creator has left the company to make a spiritual successor. The best hope it has is if they repeat what they did with Jedi Fallen Order: Let a talented team (like Respawn) make an old-fashioned mostly-linear game with no microtransactions and no interference.
