Does entering a levels warp zone unlock that level for you?

Completing 1-2 or 4-2 via their warp zone does count as completing the level, unlocking that stage if you don't have it. (You do have to go down a pipe though, running out of time in 4-2's vine warp zone would not count as a completion.)

Another thought for a harder mode: just add a mode that uses the second quest versions of levels. In the regular SMB, second quest was practically the same thing to me, but in this it would be a whole new ball game. Faster enemies and buzzy beetles instead of goombas making fireball spam impossible? Hmmm. Though it would also dish out even more opportunities for shell combos, I do think more shells flying around would result in more death.

Frankly, the drive to unlock all stages appears to have been my main drive to play.
Ergo, I'd love to start on the second quest unlocks if I could.

This is the worst level in the game, not in terms of quality but in terms of dickishness, and for that reason, it is one of the best picks. There is only one reason to pick this level, and it's because you want to be an absolute jerk. There is NOTHING of value in this level - it has fewer enemies than any other level in the game, it's a total timesink, there is no reason to go here. It is just a barren, hellish landscape - and probably the most difficult level to survive when you have a lot of coins. You can tank Lakitus and Hammer Bros and Bowser but you can't tank falling into a pit, and this is probably the most acrobatic level in the game. If someone gets to this level, there is a damn good chance they will die. You won't get a KO off of it, probably, but you will laugh at their misfortune, and this level out of any level probably has the highest chance of picking off experienced players without just waiting them out, so I think there might be reason to pick this. Of course, you also have to survive it, but that's fun, right?

for the record, this was the level that took me the most attempts to clear unlockways just because it is such BS. =O

of these, 6-2 feels the most out of place, but not by much. Pretty decent top 10.

As long as it's out of the 1-1/1-3 don't pick these tier.

I'd probably put 1-3 at bottom, with 1-1 second to worst, but those are definitely the two worst picks.

Also, 7-3 has the novelty of having the only flying koopas that fly left-to-right instead of bouncing or going up-down. Just thought I'd mention that.

Bought a bunch of turnips today. Won't be able to do this every week as I've had to work Sundays quite a bit this year, but if I get a nice profit off these they'll jumpstart my character in a big way.

And I now have a third frog villager, with Diva starting and Puddles later, they've been joined by Cousteau now, oui oui.

I guess Pietro is growing on me a bit; I really like his whimsical carnival house interior.

I'm not entirely sure. I've heard people speculate that all the levels selected by the 35 players get put into a level pool and tons of people just pick 1-1 so it shows up often. I don't know exactly how this interacts with unlocking new levels. Like if you play (because someone else submitted it) and beat 7-4 you unlock it. But, I don't know how the very first person to get 7-4 gets 7-4.

To unlock 7-4, you either have to beat 7-4 in a match, OR, have beaten 1-1 through 7-3 before in a match.

My unlocks are currently up to 6-3, having cleared 1-1 through 6-2 at least once each throughout my many, many matches.
