Seems like the guys are doing too hot either.

The average American man 20 years old and up weighs 197.9 pounds . The average waist circumference is 40.2 inches, and the average height is just over 5 feet 9 inches (about 69.1 inches) tall

5'9" and 197.9lbs can't do much complaining.

I also noticed Yahoo got rid of Flickr this year and sold off Tumblr for a massive loss (in 2013). The company seems like it's in the process of becoming entirely irrelevant or folding. People have been saying Yahoo is dead for years but I'm starting to think maybe these are the final death throes.

does yahoo even have any ties to any credit monitoring services?

I'm sure they will partner with the least secure credit monitoring service on the planet to serve the terms of the settlement.

10 years later: Class action lawsuit, if you claimed credit monitoring with Yahoo you are entitled to up to $200 due to a breach in budget credit inc.

iPad Mini (2012)

I don't have or want a TV. No consoles. My internet is 100% LTE so I guess it's slow by fiber standards but not exactly dated yet.

So overall no. I like to make things last and try to keep things out of the garbage when possible. It's difficult to convince myself to part with things that still work well. I will probably get rid of that iPad Mini soon because I barely use it and it isn't getting security patches anymore. Additionally the iPhone will receive updates through next September, at which point I will replace it. The fat laptop is mainly a backup, though I'm using it now and feel dirty using W10.

Probably 5, possibly 6 a few times, even when I did drink heavily and regularly I gave myself downtime and I honestly don't know how I held it together with coursework as well. It was still incredibly unhealthy for my body though. I remember feeling organs aching during a few points. I've had both great and terrible memories of being a drunk, but mostly good though the few negative ones are difficult to ignore. I never went to just a buzz at that point in my life, always got slammed.

These days I can pretty much only consume wines on occasion. If I try to fuck with beer the hops triggers an allergic reaction, causes a terrible swelling hangover the next few days and generally results in me going into fight or flight mode while intoxicated. Not exactly enjoyable and probably a result of flooding my body with it repeatedly for years. Not sure about hard liquor as I haven't had it in a long ass time and I'm not exactly interested in figuring it out when wine is decent.

People who had Yahoo accounts between 2012 and 2016 can now apply for a cash payment of $100, but the final amount you receive could be more or less than $100 depending on how many people file claims.

It's also possible to file claims for up to $25,000 if you can document actual out-of-pocket losses and lost time due to the breach. However, actual payouts for all claims could be much lower if the total amount claimed exceeds what's available from the $117.5 million settlement. The settlement class potentially includes up to 194 million people, so these amounts would be paid in full only if the vast majority of eligible people don't ask for money.

The settlement website lets all class members choose from at least two years of free credit monitoring services or the $100 cash payment. While that amount isn't guaranteed, just like in the Equifax settlement, at least the Yahoo settlement website makes that clear up front.

To apply for cash in the Yahoo settlement, you have to check boxes certifying that you already have credit monitoring and provide the name of the company you get the credit monitoring from.

Its new bot fight mode, which Cloudflare today enabled as a free opt-in feature for all accounts, will detect and serve bots with deliberately computationally intensive challenges. As the bot tries to crunch the impossible puzzle effectively a small bit of code only visible to the bot the bots server will max out its processing power, churning up cloud resources and driving up costs for the bot operator.

While the company says its efforts will dissuade bot activities in the long run, it recognizes its efforts in the short term will result in cloud servers working overtime, thus consuming more electricity and requiring more cooling all of which contribute to greater energy consumption.

By making bots do extra work we may be increasing carbon emissions from the [processor] usage and decided to offset through tree planting which will have a long-term effect, said Graham-Cumming. In the long term our goal is simple: ending malicious bots as a viable practice.

Each tree planted can absorb about a years worth of dual-core computing power. But given trees need time to grow, Cloudflare said its donations will result in the planting of 25 trees for each frustrated bot the company encounters and shuts down.

Source:
https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/23/cloudflare-bot-fight-mode-climate-change/

Do you think this will be an effective change? I think they should have just made it opt-out instead of opt-in if they were serious about combating malicious bots. Kinda nice to see though.

Not really. Yes you can VPN or root and block ad servers at the hosts level but it turns out shit you were trying to use before just breaks. Ad blocking really only truly works for web. Stuff like YouTube has 3rd party apps designed just for YouTube to strip adds and they break occasionally when Google does an update.

Ah that's unfortunate to hear. I recall hearing many times over that you could do an effective system-wide adblock on Android but it's not too surprising that Google has probably engineered their product to break those types of things. I'll have to look into the apps available vs what I use already to see if it's an option for me when I switch. I do like the idea of doing a direct payment to avoid advertisements from an ethical standpoint. Mozilla is experimenting with something similar for the web iirc, not sure if it will catch on though.

I'm thinking in highly populated areas. Foreigners should only be able to temporarily buy land to build businesses(not anything they can rent out). Put a time limit on it so they can't just hold onto the land. Also make it so they can't sell the land for more than they payed. So it's less attractive to hold onto it.

I think this is probably the better/more nuanced approach. I don't remember the exact details but this is kind of like what Mexico does with land outside of those regions. You can still buy land as a foreigner and build but it's held as a kind of trust with a bank and expires after some amount of years. Ideally if you've settled your children can simply inherit the trust and have it transferred over. Alternatively that person could obtain citizenship over that period and becomes eligible themselves.

So they were data mining with the goal to build models to predict and locate terrorists and other assholes? if this is the case it seems relatively benign compared to the Chinese version where the implications of the Chinese justice system basically equates to a one way street to organ harvesting. Not defending them because the data could be potentially dangerous given a shift in power. It just seems a bit of an exaggeration to say they are the same given the obvious societal/justice system differences.

What are you thoughts on Apple Arcade so far?

I haven't bothered with it because I'm really not a fan of traditional mobile gaming. Most mobile games have poor implementation for controllers, so that may be a positive thing for them if they get it right. I still think it might be a poor answer to Stadia though, and given the release shortly after the Stadia announcements I think it's fair to assume this is supposed to be Apple's response to Stadia- a service that will be able to run any intensive full featured PC game with real controller support on any device with at least 10mbps. Apple dropped the ball unless they're somehow developing a massive cloud infrastructure to compete. This will be my last revision of iOS and when my phone loses support next September I'm switching to Android, so it makes little sense to buy anything in their ecosystem at this point.

I'm a few months out from attempting my first bike tour, still training. I suppose I enjoy onebag travel, webdev, teaching, creative writing, reading books. If I get bored enough I can find entertainment in pulling things apart which ultimately ends up with me learning more because I need to repair my mistakes. A week ago I had to learn how to reprogram, remove and reattach a chip on my motherboard because I fucked it up tinkering so what was initially a nightmare turned into a great learning experience and I met a really interesting person doing great work on bootloaders as a result. This kind of thing happens to me often, server deployment comes to mind..

I'm in the process of tearing down my surly and putting it together multiple times so I know it like the back of my hand. It's still new to me and disc brakes seem like an unneeded complication that I'm not exactly sold on yet. I love camping, dabble in nature/landscape photography, have a camper van and have done extended cross country trips with it. I enjoy snowboarding and surfing but am pretty bad at both, the opportunities are rare for now. I've mostly lost interest in video games but if Stadia is any good I will subscribe and try my hand at some newer titles. Not so hot on dropping thousands on a gaming rig when there's way more important pursuits I'd rather put that money towards.

Also I am growing a few projects for passive income around various interests. If you're bored, find something to do. You don't even need other people, but they're sometimes nice to have around. I have plans to delve into video editing at some point, hopefully soon. Drinking and shopping are not hobbies, most people are convinced they are for some reason.

Edit: I'm 33.

I've become a little less cynical about sweeping change in the government. As much as I hate that Trump is in office, he is proof that the monolith of the federal government is able to shift radically in at least a few areas in the modern era. I think this gives me some hope that change in a direction I'd approve of is in fact plausible whereas prior to his election it was just slight variations of the same centrists in power and I'd felt that it would perpetuate forever.

Nah, people on both sides (including those that supported Trump) will point to Trump as an anomaly and say "we shouldn't support [radical candidate] because remember Trump" in order to bash candidates promoting change.

Certainly possible, but I've no faith in this reaction to Trump swaying outcomes until I've seen it happen at the ballot box. The dems clinging to Biden might be evidence for that kind of reaction but it's still pretty early on and Bernie Sanders is still up there with him in most polls. There's definitely a segment but I don't think it constitutes a solid majority or any certain outcome yet at least. I could see Trump shell shocking the republican party more though if he ends up being a blight on their reputation in hindsight, in the event of some major indictment or Nixon level shit.
