That Awkward Moment When You Cant Read Your Bosss Cursive Handwriting
https://larsonmarcom.com/blog/cursive-handwriting/
January 31, 2020
Help! I feel like I should tell people that I work with that I cant read cursive, but I cant really think of a way to do this without sounding like an idiot. But, reallyI cannot read cursive, at all! 2nd grade was a long time ago and those skills are gone foreverWhat to do?
This Facebook post by a 20-something bright young professional whom I mentor really resonated with me recently as a not-so-long-ago parent of a teenager in the public school system, I know there are literally millions who are not being taught how to read or write cursive handwriting. I had thought about it in the context of how she would sign her name or write hand-written thank you notes, but never until this had I considered how it would affect her generations ability to work effectively with others who, like me, were taught cursive handwriting as a matter of course, and are still using it in the business setting.
This millennial had received edits to her work from a senior executive and couldnt implement them. Of course its not her fault, but she still didnt want to chance losing credibility by articulating that she couldnt read cursive. So, what to do? When meeting with her recently, another colleague and I discussed it and counseled her to just say Im having difficulty reading your handwriting or better yet, work with the executives assistant to decipher the edits. She was able to do this effectively, but the issue has larger implications.
According to Cursive a Puzzle for Many Young Students, Melissa Nix writes:
The digital age has pushed to the periphery a penmanship skill used for generations. The world of personal computers, email and texting has rendered the handwritten note an anomaly, something that many of todays students get only from grandparents. Some parents complain that their middle schoolers cant sign their names.
Recently the Illinois General Assembly passed a mandate started requiring public elementary schools to provide cursive instruction beginning in the 2018-2019 academic year. In Why Should We Teach Handwriting, by Dr. Susan Cahill, Some wonder why handwriting, especially given the trend in many school districts to move towards 1:1 technology, has become such a priority. While the need to become proficient and adaptable technology-users remains, handwriting is more tied to learning and academic achievement than many realize.
Dr. Cahills article goes on to say, The primary purpose of handwriting is communication and, more specifically in educational settings, to convey ones knowledge to teachers. Almost half of a kindergarten students day is spent doing writing tasks. As children advance in school, the expectations for writing increase. For example, by third grade, childrens writing is expected to become more complex and they are required to write informative and explanatory texts, narratives, and research reports.
Some children appear to be innate handwriters. When provided with crayons, markers, or pencils, these children hold them correctly and see to know to draw a line from the top of the page down to the bottom and to make a continuous curved line in counterclockwise fashion to produce a circle. Innate or automatic handwriters are able to draw complex shapes and write their names before they head off to preschool. Once they get to school, automatic handwriters are able to copy words and fill up journal pages without much support. However, it can be difficult for parents and early childhood teachers to discern which students will pick up handwriting easily and which ones will need more instruction.
Its estimated that approximately 10-30% of elementary school students have difficulty with automatic handwriting. Students that struggle with handwriting often have to choose between producing legible text and getting their ideas on to the page. Handwriting has also been linked to the development of literacy skills, such as spelling and sight word reading. In fact, the physical act of handwriting has been found to light up regions of the brain that are associated with literacy and supports reading skill acquisition, particularly letter naming and recognition.
So aside from these difficulties and the obvious challenges in communicating effectively between generations, there are also historical impacts, according to Nixs article.
Who, when several generations have chosen the keyboard over cursive, will be able to read handwritten love letters or historical documents? asked Dennis Williams, the national product manager for Zaner-Bloser, an education publisher that produces popular cursive instruction curriculum. Certainly Zaner-Bloser has a bias, but he makes a valid point.
If students cant read or write cursive, there will be parts of the world they will not be able to access, stated Patrick ONeill, an assistant principal in Sacramento, CA. They have to be able to access the forms of communication available today.
It will be interesting to see if the art of cursive handwriting can be saved, or if we will become a society where thank you notes are only received via text, Facebook or email, or if in hard copy form, with chicken scratch signatures.
Call me old fashioned, but as I type this post (and am admittedly grateful that I dont have to do so in long-hand or cursive), Im somehow still rooting for cursive.

The French have been teaching cursive correctly and consistently throughout the years, we can learn from them.

https://www.aaa.com/autorepair/articles/the-amazing-disappearing-spare-tire
AAA research found that over the last dozen years automakers have been eliminating spare tires from their vehicles. Today, approximately 30 percent of new cars come without a spare (up from just 5 percent in 2006) and it is estimated there are more than 30 million cars on the road that lack a spare tire.

That % is going to increase as manufacturers find ways to save weight on their vehicles.

Spare Tires are going to be a thing of the past.

Especially full sized Spare Tires, much less those tiny dinky "Emergency" Spare Tires.

The American Psychological Association agrees with you.

"Media Contagion" Is Factor in Mass Shootings, Study Says
https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2016/08/media-contagion
DENVER People who commit mass shootings in America tend to share three traits: rampant depression, social isolation and pathological narcissism, according to a paper presented at the American Psychological Associations annual convention that calls on the media to deny such shooters the fame they seek.
Mass shootings are on the rise and so is media coverage of them, said Jennifer B. Johnston, PhD, of Western New Mexico University. At this point, can we determine which came first? Is the relationship merely unidirectional: More shootings lead to more coverage? Or is it possible that more coverage leads to more shootings?
Johnston and her coauthor, Andrew Joy, BS, also of Western New Mexico University, reviewed data on mass shootings amassed by media outlets, the FBI and advocacy organizations, as well as scholarly articles, to conclude that media contagion is largely responsible for the increase in these often deadly outbursts. They defined mass shootings as either attempts to kill multiple people who are not relatives or those resulting in injuries or fatalities in public places.
The prevalence of these crimes has risen in relation to the mass media coverage of them and the proliferation of social media sites that tend to glorify the shooters and downplay the victims, Johnston said.
We suggest that the media cry to cling to the publics right to know covers up a greedier agenda to keep eyeballs glued to screens, since they know that frightening homicides are their No. 1 ratings and advertising boosters, she said.
The demographic profile of mass shooters is fairly consistent, she said. Most are white, ostensibly heterosexual males, largely between the ages of 20 and 50. They tend to see themselves as victims of injustice, and share a belief that they have been cheated out of their rightful dominant place as white, middle-class males.
Unfortunately, we find that a cross-cutting trait among many profiles of mass shooters is desire for fame, she said. This quest for fame among mass shooters skyrocketed since the mid-1990s in correspondence to the emergence of widespread 24-hour news coverage on cable news programs, and the rise of the internet during the same period.
She cited several media contagion models, most notably one proposed by Towers et al. (2015), which found the rate of mass shootings has escalated to an average of one every 12.5 days, and one school shooting on average every 31.6 days, compared to a pre-2000 level of about three events per year. A possibility is that news of shooting is spread through social media in addition to mass media, she said.
If the mass media and social media enthusiasts make a pact to no longer share, reproduce or retweet the names, faces, detailed histories or long-winded statements of killers, we could see a dramatic reduction in mass shootings in one to two years, she said. Even conservatively, if the calculations of contagion modelers are correct, we should see at least a one-third reduction in shootings if the contagion is removed.
She said this approach could be adopted in much the same way as the media stopped reporting celebrity suicides in the mid-1990s after it was corroborated that suicide was contagious. Johnston noted that there was a clear decline in suicide by 1997, a couple of years after the Centers for Disease Control convened a working group of suicidologists, researchers and the media, and then made recommendations to the media.
The media has come together before to work for good, to incite social change, she said. They have done, and they can do it. It is time. It is enough.
Session 1246: Mass Shooters and the Media Contagion Effect, (PDF, 265KB) Symposium, Thursday, Aug. 4, 1-2:50 p.m. MDT, Mile High Ballroom 4F Level 3, Ballroom Level, Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th Street, Denver.
Presentations are available from the APA Public Affairs Office.

More Loop Holes in the Tax Code that need to be closed.

A persons Death shouldn't allow avoidance of any Capital Gains Tax or regular tax matters.

Before any wealth can be transfered to the next of kin, the money must be properly taxed.

Disallow any bypassing of Estate Taxes for any reason. That 40% Estate Tax must be used every time the Estate transfers from the deceased to the next of kin/owner.

Also Tax Deductions for Charitable Donations need to be canceled entirely.

Not much of a "Charitable Donation" / Giving if you get something in return.

You should get nothing while giving away your donation.

That's the whole point of "Charity".

All Loans must be reported to IRS and factored into their Income.

If you want to stop a criminal with least amount of chance to kill them, you need to hurt them without killing them.

Tazing has also killed folks thanks to the high voltage that could stop the heart.

So the only thing left is to inflict lots pain.

Enough pain to make them submit without killing them.

The bare minimum Kinetic Energy needed as according to the US Army is 59 ft-lbs of energy in a bullet is needed to penetrate 1/2" of pine board can be considered a lethal hit.

+ Sample Kinetic Energy values of various Projectiles from the Muzzle:
  • _____1.1801 ft-lb: Upper limit of Airsoft Legal Plastic BB Muzzle Energy in CA legal matches
  • ____26.0000 ft-lb: Air Rifle
  • ____44.0000 ft-lb: Muzzle Energy of .22 Short on the Low end
  • ____59.0000 ft-lb: Minimum Lethal Kinetic Energy necessary
  • ____63.0000 ft-lb: Muzzle Energy of .25 ACP low powered cartridge
  • ____87.0000 ft-lb: Muzzle Energy of .22 Short on the Top end
  • 14,945.0000 ft-lb: Muzzle Energy of .50 BMG upper end cartridge

That's just to give you a sense of scale for how much Kinetic Energy certain Cartridges can launch a bullet at from the Muzzle.

That means you need to create a projectile that is launched with < 59 fpe (ft-lb of energy) from the muzzle that can still hurt ALOT.

Here's an example of a Super Sonic Nerf Dart and how much it can hurt somebody or something

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrtBc-9pQv4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS8_XRYae80

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuMdWI6sm90

Obviously more Kinetic Energy than a AirSoft Pellet, but significantly below MLE (Minimum Lethal Energy).

Notice how in the last video, he shot his friend in the back as an experiment and how his friend immediately keeled over from 1/4 powered Pneumatic Launched Nerf Dart. It also left a huge welt.

Now imagine how much more it'd hurt if he was using full power.

Have Cornman go buy a new toilet seat and install it.

It's his responsibility to fix it.

For me, the Mechanical KB feels great when it works, but when it starts having issues, it's a PAIN IN THE ARSE to fix.

After owning two sets of Mechanical KB's, I can understand why the industry went to membrane KB's.

I've had two different Mechanical KB's.

Both eventually developed issues where they send in double Letter inputs with one key stroke.

I eventually went back to memberane ergonomic KB's and I've never had that problem again.

Where were you when she needed your help?

There needs to be a "Vegy Signal" to shoot out into the sky so you can go over and do your thing.

What % of recovery status do you think you're at currently?

I went with a skagen
Are you ok with that watch getting scratched / nicked in your line of work?

That Skagen seems more like a "Fancy Party" watch than a practical one for EDC.
