also wth..... all Alolan Pokemon get left behind this time? what a bullllshit ending!! why this change? like back in Black/White Ash's spare Pokemon started getting sent to Juniper instead of Oak, but at the end of the season she sent them to Oaks as Ash left the region. why tf would they just be left behind?

and it's the same for Jessie & James too inexplicably - they have to abandon Mareanie & Mimikyu in Alola to report back to headquarters. Yeah every series they leave their Pokemon behind now but it's been that they leave them with headquarter, not just released into the wild. because then what did Jessie & James even do this series? they can't even claim they ran baddies out which is what they've been claiming in past series. I thought well at least they got a Z-Crystal to bring back with Mimikyu but I guess not

man I hate this what a downer ending to a series I was already down on. this is no Serena Kiss that's for sure

I always really liked that championship match too, the big thing was the opponents Dragonite, but Ash cleared out the rest of their Pokemon pretty well so his final strategy was pretty much to Zapp Brannigan the Dragonite which sounds but but listen it was pretty epic

nah he didn't bring any of his old pokes - Poipole returned (as a Naganadel) and was just like hey I'll join you for this last battle

so throughout the League challenge itself Ash didn't even have a full team, and yeah, he wins the champion challenge with a Pokemon that isn't his (and one he makes a super noob mistake with by telling it to use a poison attack against Lucario lmao)

Lycanroc was his only fully evolved pokemon when the League started, Meltan evolved before Finals, and Torracat evolved after it beat Kukui's Incineroar and then immediately fainted after evolving

btw the League itself, being a first for the Alola region, didn't even have any qualifications whatsoever. The Island challenge wasn't actually part of this journey, and that's why literally everbody got to join and it's a Battle Royale that narrows down the 16 contestants (Jessie & James make it with their strategy of avoiding battles lmao)

and he really does win the whole thing, huh. I thought okay I guess he wins the League but loses to the Champion so Journeys can get him that final accomplishment but nah he's done

and I really want to make fun of the fact that his winning Champions Battle contains the exclamation OOPS I TOTALLY FORGOT as Ash used a fucking poison attack against a Lucario

but then holy shit what the fuck is Tapunium Z I don't remember this monstrosity

also yeah wtf Tapu really just interrupts the CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH to go hey stop i wanna fight this bitch so we really don't actually get Ash vs Kukui all the way through and we'll never know what that 6th mystery Pokemon was that he had in weighting behind his ace Incineroar

Ash wins Alola? But I thought Journeys was what finally gave him the W to close the series off

.... ngl very petty but I hate that it's this ugly ass Ash to be called Champion. Makes me REALLLLY wish Ash could've won Kalos because that was a really good setup to do so, not this series that really wasn't focused on a league until the end. Ash didn't even catch a full party in this series, Rowlet is still a babby, and Torracat didn't even get to be Incineroar for the finals.

I like that Ash caught Meltan but it didn't really feel like a party member but more like Rowlet's chill buddy. cool that it evolved into Melmetal for the League tho, but this series has been all about Lycanroc & Torracat (tbf, they're cool training buddies)

on the brighter end, Guzma vs Ash semis just did the fucking funniest shit of the season

match started with Guzma's Scizor vs Ash's Torracat, he quickly uses U-Turn in a sneaky way to attack and switch in Golisopod with the better Water type advantage. cool cool, I love mechanics-accurate strategy in my anime

so Golisopod & Torracat have a good fight, then Torracat uses Fire Blast and Golisopod freaks out and their Emergency Exit ability triggers, swapping in Scizor to get OHKO's by the Fire Blast

fucking hilarious use of existing Pokemon mechanics omg

btw other highlight of the league is how absolutely brutal Guzma's Golisopod was vs Lana's Primarina

it's Ash's Rowlet vs Hau's Decidueye, already yeah rolling eyes at the match-up to begin with but fine whatever Pokemon always does this stuff. Honestly though man Rowlet hasn't been a serious Pokemon this entire series, it's whole thing is just that it sleeps in his bag (more recently, becoming bffs with Meltan who also sleeps in Ash's bag)

but whatever, so the fight goes on and Rowlet is really just getting its ass beat the whole time and I really don't think does anything while Decidueye gets hits in on Rowlet. At a certain point Kiawe starts thinking Ash might be planning something, bringing up Brave Bird and they talk about its pros & cons in the stands

Eventually, it happens. Ash calls out Brave Bird, and in this moment Hau smirks - he saw this coming. He prepared for this, and he counters with his own powerful Flying move in Sky Attack. The two moves collide together and both Pokemon are knocked out, the battle is decided by who gets up first. Decidueye does it! It's a stunner for Ash to lose this early (quarter finals, having only surived the Battle Royale then beaten Faba for a 1v1) but honestly it's an absolutely deserved win for Hau & Decidueye. I was honestly impressed that the show stomped Ash out here and gave Hau a win that truthfully just made sense.

oh but wait a minute then what's the problem?

well after the judge has made its decision, the jumbotron declares the victory, and everyone's kind of in shock including Ash who's pretty devastated about this loss - HOLD IT calls out Kahuna Hala! As he points out............ Rowlet can still fight! He's actually just sleeping! Rowlet turns over and yeah it's got the snooze bubble, it's only knocked-out asleep from the collision of their devastating attacks! So the fight is reset, Decidueye shackles Rowlet to the ground with another Spirit Shackle (which doesn't damage in the anime for some reason, only pins a Pokemon), to be followed up with another Sky Attack. Rowlet gets out of the way in time using Feather Dance which is apparently an evasive attack that gets it out of the shackle so it can counter with another Brave Bird for the win

btw reminder that Ash lost the Indigo League because Charizard went to sleep loafing around because he didn't take Ritchie's Sparky seriously as an opponent

Ash vs Hau in the Alolan League has to be the worst official match there is wow

(well for switching when a trainer sends out a new pokemon, instead I have it so after Trainer faints you get a free switch that doesn't activate the turn. so it doesn't ask you, but if you switch it brings in your next pokemon without triggering a response, and resets the pokemon who joined the fight for xp)

my choices are change tm34 to something else and I don't even have to program bide at all, or add red/blue's TM list to the movepool database

Season 1 I haven't been a fan of, like I said it was just very episodic, doesn't have the same kind of direction of a gang setting out on an adventure with a goal

Season 2 started out with a pretty focused arc though I've really enjoyed (especially focusing on the Lusamine family & Ultra Beasts and doing a cool part of the game's plot)

backstory: Mareanie joined because she's attracted to James because he looks like a Mareanie

this ep we run into an old boyfriend Mareanie and their story is that the male Mareanie beat up a Tentacruel that was hassling James's Mareanie while she was looking for a Corsola horn, and the male promises to help her find one. fastforward and James's Mareanie catches the male Mareanie giving a Corsola horn to another Mareanie so James's Mareanie cried and ran away, meeting James

so now running into that male Mareanie, he tries to give her a Corsola horn but she slaps him and goes running to James, and the male Mareanie attacks James and evolves into Toxapex (thank god I can more easily differentiate them in writing). also I forget the order of occurrence but according to Meowth, Toxapex only gave the other Corsola horn to the other Mareanie because it was one she dropped and he was just giving it back to her

but the more Toxapex poisons James, the more purple he becomes and the more Mareanie is attracted to him, and she is angered at Toxapex for attacking James and Toxapex scurries away

next day they meet again and James tries to push Mareanie in to being with Toxapex to be happy and starts doing what Ash did to Charizard and say he'd be better off to encourage Mareanie to go. Mareanie cries, Toxapex wants to fight James for making Mareanie cry, they battle it out James vs Toxapex slap fight. they get exhausted and earn each others respect, Mareanie thanks Toxapex for the battle

then out comes a Tentacruel trying to attack them, James intervenes, grabbing Tentacruel's tentacles and just fucking hauling it into the sun holy shit. Toxapex is impressed and wants to give a Corsola horn and starts chasing him around with blushies which infuriates Mareanie out of her jealousy for James again (episode started with Mareanie scaring off a Frillish James was about to catch because she was jealous and doesn't want James to have any female pokemon)
