I'm not even saying I love most of those bands. Some of them I don't even like. But they're all either bands I like more than Pavement, or bands that made accomplishments in the kinds of music they made that I consider more significant than anything Pavement did.

I don't like Red Hot Chili Peppers all that much, but I like them better than Pavement.

I'm sure that you and whatever pretentious indie bands you frequent still love them. I am also sure they are much less popular than they were at their mid 90s peak.

Pavement's esteem is higher now than it was when they were together. Look up any list of greatest bands, indie or not, or greatest albums, and you'll see Pavement there. Sometimes as high as #1.

And their reunion shows sell out within hours or minutes, and play in much bigger venues than when they were together.

also I'm honestly surprised you've heard of Sleater Kinney btw

all in all, your initial statement of them being "One of the most mediocre, forgettable bands of the decade" is completely baffling and complete nonsense. It's inarguably wrong.

I know that they were always critical darlings with a strong cult following although I thought it had died out with the 90s. There are a good number of indie bands with a niche audience and a few critics that love them but that doesn't necessarily make them the best ever.

Man, even back in the 90s we barely cared about Pavement. One of the most mediocre, forgettable bands of the decade.

The funny thing is that none of that is true. They're probably the most beloved, critically acclaimed indie band of the 90s. Also super influential.

You'd be hard pressed to name a better band from the decade, and whose stature has only risen with time

hell yeah dude. that's like the mecca (well, technically Boulder is, but Denver is close enough)

if you're going roped climbing, then you need to rent shoes and a harness. if you're only bouldering, then you only need to rent shoes.

also take a intro class. usually gyms offer a free intro class for first timers.
